    Actually if anyone has any uncertainty or ambivalence about police response to large, non-violent, but highly disruptive public protests from 2020 in places like Minneapolis, Louisville, Seattle, Portland, etc. and the tactics employed in those places over, and over, and over again, for weeks stretching into even months in some cases, then they should really pay close attention here.

    Pay attention to how Windsor goes today. Pay attention to how the police are dressed. Pay attention to how they are armed. Pay attention to how they behave in response to provocation, insult, and “perceived threat”.

    Just pay close attention to the videos and images. Ignore the media spin or government PR hype. Just watch and pay attention.

    Then some time tomorrow take a moment to review all the tweeted videos, live feeds, and news reports. And see if there is anything at all to be learned from comparison and contrast.

    While Rickia Young was being swarmed and beaten her four-year-old son was violently yanked from his child safety seat, forcibly kidnapped, and concealed for most of a day, during which time Ms. Young and her attorney were unable to obtain any information from the Philadelphia Police about the child’s whereabouts. While the child was kidnapped the Philadelphia FOP lodge was somehow given access to the missing child and used that access to photograph the minor child without consent and falsely accuse Ms. Young of child abandonment.

    About six hours into the Windsor police operation all of the blocking protest vehicles have been removed without incident and about 200 protesters on foot remain gathered in a single location surrounded by police lines. Detour roadways around the remaining group of protesters are cleared as is the bridge. It appears that Canadian authorities will be able to resume operations of the crossing as soon as customs and border officials from both nations can coordinate and prepare. Police are remaining passive and so far allowing any of the protesters on foot who wish to leave the area to do so on their own. No helmets. No goggles. No chemical masks. No face paint. No body armor. No machine guns.

    Did you know there’s a “CHOP” in Ottawa?

    It’s about an hours walk from the hill. At the beginning of the week Ottawa police handed over a corner of RCGT Park stadium parking lot to the protesters right next to the Marriot. While the stadium is owned by the city, the portion of the parking lot handed over to protesters by the police is federally owned. There truckers have built a fortified compound surrounded by big rigs, barricades, stolen dumpsters, and stacks of sandbagged pallets forming a kind of palisade wall surrounding a massive encampment with bonfires, kitchen tents, and even vendors selling swag (and drugs).

    It’s being used by the protesters as a staging and resupply area for the main protest on the hill. No police whatsoever. A completely lawless environment with it’s own controlled access points where credentials (wtf) are checked to grant entry. Weapons and rumors abound.

    It’s probably without their fully informed consent, as I suspect that there are voter signatures removing the criminality of the allegation, if not the misrepresentation. If you read the piece, you’ll learn that some of the people interviewed stood there and watched the canvasser fill out a voter registration form of some sort. Those people signed something they could not read. They weren’t forced to sign, even if they may have been misinformed.

    It might keep the voter from supporting the primary candidate of their choice if the registration change means they are excluded from voting in the Democrat primary. It won’t keep the voter from supporting the Democrat in the general, though.

That it deprives police of the “command and control” of the situation that they absolutely require in order to be able to ensure public safety and officer safety.     In British Columbia, 6.77% of the population has been infected.

    British Columbia’s 2,747 Covid-19 deaths amount to 1 of every 1,820 provincial residents, or 0.055% of the population.

    South Dakota’s nearly identical 2,706 Covid-19 deaths, with 1/6th of B.C.’s population, amount to 1 of every 328 state residents, or 0.305% of the population.

    I did not randomly pick South Dakota for this exercise. I cherry-picked a GOP shithole and compared it to a mostly randomly picked Canadian province (the only selection bias being it’s the one I live closest to). It just happens to work out nicely that B.C. and South Dakota have very similar urban-rural population distributions, which if anything adds validity to the comparison.
