Amtrak will be making some service reductions due to Omicron and some staffing issues. The Lomg Distance trains will be 5 days a week, which unlike service reductions during the previous administration, is not that bad. The vat rate among Amtrak Employees is now 97%. Plus, with the Empire Builder, last weeks weather played havoc with the crew schedules.

On my post at two, a good example of crew issues affecting the Empire Builder, especially with the weather. Prior to the flooding in SW Washington, Amtrak had rerouted Train 7 via Vancouver still running combined with Train 27 to Portland. The problem is, the crew of 7 would not be able to continue on the Columbia Gorge.
I have seen a map of Amtrak Crew Districts for Engineers and Conductors, for the Empire Builder in WA, Conductors work from Seattle and Portland to Spokane before a crew change, but Engineers change at Wenatchee on 7/8, and Pasco on 27/28. Also, Engineers and Conductors have to be qualified for the district they are on..
Last week was not the weather to be waiting for a dog catch crew in.

@3 I think we all agree on this point: Republicans didn’t like democracy before, have now progressed to a willingness to eliminate it, including by foul means if they can’t prevail by fair means, and want to replace it with fascism.
I’ve always believed Germany wasn’t unique, the Germans who followed Hitler were pretty much like people everywhere, and America isn’t immune from getting a Hitler someday.
I think we have to operate on the assumption that if Republicans get unchecked power they’ll abuse it, and we can’t assume they’ll stop short of the things other tyrannical regimes do.
Rightwing media have trained them to hate liberals, scapegoat people they don’t like, and primed them to commit or at least abide mass murder.
Everyone who studies history says the world failed to stop Hitler when it could have. If we are to learn from that mistake, the lesson is heed the warnings implicit in what the Republicans are saying and doing now, because later may be too late.
This is where Manchin and Sinema fall on their asses. They want bipartisanship. Sinema wants to “heal the divisions” by “working with” Republicans. Those are noble goals, but they’re ignoring the oceans of evidence that that’s not possible. Where they’re wrong is failing or refusing to acknowledge that Republicans aren’t behaving like normal people and this isn’t normal politics. They’re trying to negotiate with people possessed by a Hitler mentality. If things fall apart, they will go down in history as the Neville Chamberlains who could’ve stopped the fascist takeover of America, and all the evil likely to follow, but didn’t.
The Founding Fathers understood the crucial importance of checks and balances, and what Manchin and Sinema need to realize is that the people they insist on negotiating with and accommodating are disassembling the checks and balances. That ought to speak for itself, but seems lost on them, or over their heads.

– Over and over again, like all of his “conservative” Republican brethren Bob declared that these were all legitimate, lawful political protesters, a few of whom “got carried away”.
– Until all but very recently Bob argued consistently that the FBI and DOJ were bowing to political pressure from Democrats to over investigate and over prosecute the events and perpetrators.
– Only days ago Bob was arguing that THIS GUY was paid by the FBI to attend the event, stir up trouble, and trigger the mob violence as part of a vast “Leftist” conspiracy among federal law enforcement and DOJ (all of whom were working for Donald J. Trump at the time).
I could easily go on. You all know it. And it’s not really about Bob at this point. We see him dissembling, revising, fidgeting, and furiously memory-holing his bullshit here every single day. By now we all recognize him for the shameless and frankly incompetent troll that he is.

Sometimes I wonder when Snoqualmie Pass is closed due to avalanche danger, if only the Milwaukee Road line was never abandoned. Turns out, there may have been a proposal in the 1930s for a lower elevation road and rail tunnel through the pass. Perhaps as former Rep. McDermott said in a recent letter, someone should search the DoT archives for the study, if there really was one. This letter that was shared on All Aboard Washington’s Twitter and Facebook pages was based on a conversation between two politicians 40 years ago.

Although they said North Bend to Ellensberg, so it may have just been a shuttle idea. NB may have been on US10, and served by the Milwaukee, it was a branch line to Everett. Restoration of the Milwaukee today may be impossible. Especially Renton-Maple Valley. Probably use part of the Stampede Pass route and SR18 if tried today. A few trestles of the old line were still around a few years ago, visible from I-90, but being in disrepair, may be gone now. One thing the Milwaukee did before the pullback of passenger service on the Pacific Extension was run ski trains to Hyak, with the ski runs lighted by power from the Hyak Substation.

A little background on the nickname some online have given to Senator Pauline Hanson of Queensland. It comes from an exchange during a committee meeting over submarine procurement, thinking the Diesel Engines and pumpjets do the same thing. One produces power, one moves the ship. Pumpjets are becoming standard on submarines these days to replace the biggest drawback of traditional screw propellers, noise. Subs are supposed to be stealthy. The stakes have changed, as the RAN has now canceled the sub contract in favor of Nuclear Power. Some SSNs, including Virginia class boats, use pumpjet propulsors.

For those of you familiar with NYC, what’s with people pushing other people off subway platforms into the path of oncoming trains? Is there a practical way to prevent this, say, by installing railings on the platforms (with openings for people to get on and off the trains), or slowing down the trains as they approach platforms? There seem to be a lot of these incidents, and just putting more cops on subway patrol wouldn’t do very much to prevent these attacks; it seems to me physical barriers between people and tracks would work better.

@31 Off the top of my head, converting a disused railroad tunnel to highway use would be an engineering challenge, and probably very expensive, but not physically impossible. You’d need a ventilation system to deal with vehicle exhaust, and an emergency lane or turnouts or some system (such as tow trucks stationed at the entrances) so accidents or vehicle breakdowns wouldn’t block the tunnel. It would require some engineering to deal with wet or icy roadways, a factor that isn’t a problem with tracks but is for vehicles on tires.
It wouldn’t be necessary to enlarge the existing tunnel if it was used only as a temporary bypass or detour route for when the regular route is closed by snow conditions. Traffic would move slowly, but would move.
Ggggggeeee Money! spews:
Could you imagine if Barak Obama did what Donald The FuckHump Duck did on January 6th?
Ohhhh my. Bob.
Yeah, let’s talk about it.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@36 From the link, it appears NYC’s biggest hurdle — apart from money, which is always an issue — is lack of uniformity in rolling stock, such that you can’t line up the train doors with the platform doors. This would be a problem with simple (and cheaper) railings, too. Although maybe what they could do is install railings some distance back from the platform edge, and people waiting for trains could stay behind those, and then venture onto the exposed platform only when the train arrives and is stopped.
From a prevention standpoint, it doesn’t do much good to throw these crazy people into jails or mental institutions and keep them there after they kill someone. There’s always another one lurking in the subways. This one turned himself in. It’s almost as if he killed this woman to get himself incarcerated, which in his mind may be a better setup than living on the streets.
EvergreenRailfan spews:
37)Sounds like the suggestion would be a new tunnel. Before Great Northern put a vent system in Cascade Tunnel, they used electric locomotives between Skykomish and Wenatchee. Snoqualmie is not like Whittier, Alaska, where the active rail tunnel allows car traffic when trains aren’t running.
The vent system in Cascade Tunnel has it’s own issues, takes 30 minutes to clear once a train passed through. Which means the crews have to keep the sidings clear during the snow as well.

This is rapidly becoming weaponized trailer park performance art.
If I’m to believe Carl, intelligent, healthy, well educated, respectful, and civilized Real Americans in places like King County are over 90% vaccinated. Yes. That still means there is a very small chance that in any given gathering of such people, one of them might be an “asymptomatic” spreader of Omicron. But depending greatly on how you define “asymptomatic” and just as much on how that individual defines it, probably not so much. And if those gathered people are fully vaccinated and boosted and are reasonably cautious, maybe that one infection results in 0.9 additional (or 0.5, or 0.3). See where this goes?
Get on with your lives and let the trailer parks fend for themselves. Don’t let yourselves be recruited as part of an effort to “model” behavior for the other 40% who for largely incomprehensible reasons face vastly higher risk.
LET THEM DIE! CHEER THEM ON!
I can only say to people in health care faced with this onslaught of stupidity, choose your battles. The idea was to speed up movement from the ports of LA and Long Beach to points inland. The Eastern extension is a work in progress. Seems it did happen on the Alameda Corridor, and according to Forbes reporting, it’s a tempting target because it passes through Low Income neighborhoods. Guess they didn’t think of properly fencing it, then again, the idea was to eliminate grade crossings for motorists. Should have sped up transit times for freight, not slowed it down. Slower train speeds is supposedly part of Precision Scheduled Railroading, guess slower trains, less money spent on maintenance. At the time the ACTA opened, transit rail construction in LA was stalled due to mismanagement at the MTA, the sinkholes the North Hollywood Red Line caused, and the old Methane deposit on the Purple Line caused by improperly capped oil wells. The Tunnel Ban that had loopholes was my favorite.

122)Anything can. One of the reasons the first LINK Train of the day is a little slower, so the operator can spot any obstructions left on the track in the night. I’ve seen trash had been dropped on the tracks from the overpasses near King Street Station, but sometimes the train blows it off the tracks. Some of it not just from litterbugs and hobos, the containers Everett’s trash train don’t look like they are well sealed. Just like a nail in the road can puncture a tire. Remember the wreck of the Sunset Limited near Phoenix? Rail knocked out of alignment, but the device that would have alerted dispatchers was bypassed. Still a reward out on that one. Ironically, an article about an eerily similar wreck 50 years earlier, had just appeared in a magazine when it happened.
There is one term where cars end up on diverging tracks, picking the switch. Happens when the switch rail loses adhesion. I’ve also seen that on some urban freight tracks, switch handles are hidden under manhole or water meter style covers, not exactly padlocked. At junctions, they used to be controlled by block operators in nearby towers. At least it looks like Montana isn’t the last on that one, like they were with the Telegraph, and in the case of aviation, lighted beacons.

And when Trump and Biden finally met for a debate on Oct. 22, the debate commission employed a mute button to prevent the president from interrupting his rival.

I expect the RNC will use the “ban on partisan political activity by officials and staffers of the commission” clause as an excuse to object to any activity that makes for a fairer debate like the mute button. Any activity that doesn’t help the republican will be called partisan .

Interesting procurement process being done by regional light rail operators in Germany and Austria. 6 operators working together with a common base spec, but with room to handle regional variations, especially different voltages.(Some in Karlsruhe run on the mainline railway, so they run 750VDC in the city, 25 KV AC on the main), platform height, and whether bi or uni directional. Something a state or states with multiple light rail systems should try.

The Karlsruhe Model in Particular, and TramTrain in General could be what our Interurbans evolved too. Especially prior to Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935. Stone and Webster was one major utility holding company, if they had standardized designs better, might have saved some money. They had something going with the Birney Car, but between artificially capped fares(riders complained to the politicians to keep fares at a nickel), and mandating conductors(It was designed to be operated by only one person), blunted it’s potential.
We had something going with the PCCs still in use in San Francisco, but most Interurbans were in decline when it was in production. Most customers were city systems, only a handful of Interurbans used the PCC, such as the Illinois Terminal and the Pacific Electric. The car was a standard design, but very adaptable to customer needs, some foreign operators made articulated versions of it. Never operated in Seattle, but the Union was pushing for a demonstration, just like what was done with the trolleybuses. Some say PCCs would be too big to assault Queen Anne Ave, but I believe the trucks could be adapted for the counterbalance, although they were between 44 and 50 ft long, and the trolleybuses used today are 40ft. PCCs did operate in Vancouver, and one SF Muni vehicle is in a museum in Oregon, alongside a Boeing LRV.

“‘Scott is now in a hospital in Texas getting critical care,’ Holsten said. … ‘The last update I got was yesterday afternoon after some tests had been run; all organs are working except his lungs.'”
Which is no big deal. And, needless to say, “Quiner was unvaccinated against the coronavirus prior to being hospitalized.”

He can wait until as late as June to decide to file, raising almost unlimited funds until then. And continuing to tease and prod the mouth breathers.

Other pandemic programs had less regressive distributions. Stimulus checks were close to uniform in dollar terms across the four lower income quintiles, while pandemic unemployment insurance benefits went to both the upper and lower tails of the household income distribution.
According to the accounting pros I know, basically most of these business owners simply submitted fraudulent payroll reports. In one case I know of they used the money to set up a lease-back scheme for a yacht.
Don’t worry. Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema are on it!

About three quarters of forgiven PPP payroll loans instead went into the pockets of business owners to buy shit:
This is how the law was structured – business owners keeping the money is not illegal. As long as the money went to payroll, and all of the record-keeping was in order, ultimately the loans were forgiven. It turns into free money.
What did you expect, QoS McHillbilly – raises or bonuses for employees? They were employed and paid despite a decline in business. Being paid for doing less work was their bonus.
Vicious Troll spews:
@ 176, 177
A business receives a loan, transfers the loaned funds into the payroll account so that it isn’t comingled with other monies. Employees are demonstrably paid with the loaned funds. Requirements are fulfilled.
In the vast majority of the cases, business owners keeping the money is legal.
Always follow the money.

Congress voted overwhelmingly to hand out money with virtually no targeting and with essentially burdenless preconditions other than keeping track of paperwork. It’s not illegal for small businesses to take advantage of the law.
It’s not illegal for small businesses to accept free money that ultimately will raise interest rates, and future taxes paid by YLB’s kids.

Looks like the Wisconsin Talgos are headed to Nigeria. Attempts to use them here fell through whe Washington State backed out and refused all of Talgos lease proposals. Even though they are a different models, WSDoT has pretty much lost faith in the TALGO, and are going with the new Siemens Venture train set. Also, WSDoTs maintenance contract was up for renegotiation, and with the decision to go with the Siemens product, any deal with TALGO would be short-term. Personally, would rather have seen WSDoT hedge their bets, the Amtrak CEO at the time promised help with the replacement following DuPont, but Amtrak CEOs following through on decisions of previous CEOs is a rarity.
