    Lately when I see a story about rail unions seeing, thought it was over a vaccine mandate. Not with the latest case filed by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen and the Transportation Division of the Sheet Metal, Air, and Rail Transportation workers Union against Norfolk Southern. Turns out due to a conductor shortage, NS has been having engineers work as conductors.

    My father had a classmate that was a conductor for Burlington Northern and one of it’s predecessors. As the caboose was being retired, instead of moving up to the lead locomotive, he transferred to Amtrak.

    This might come as a shock to some, but I’m actually for some private sector passenger rail development. Love the Brightline in Florida, Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, and next year, continuing up to the Space Coast, and then along the Bee Linr to Orlando. After that, plans are in the works to follow I-4 into Tampa. It has been getting vehement opposition almost as intense as if it were a government project, with NIMBYs trying to get Tallahassee and the Feds to block it. From Miami to Cocoa Beach it follows an improved Florida East Coast railway, so no eminent domain issues, and was largely financed by Fortress investments which at one point also owned the FEC.

    Now, as Brightline prepares to resume service on November 8th, they are launching a First Mile/Last Mile app called Brightline +. Basically becoming what is known in the Public transit industry as Mobility as a Service. Brightline + will offer a shared ride to and from a station within a 5 mile radius. 75% of the vehicles will be electric.

    This is a news alert I have been waiting for over a year to see. Black Ball Ferry will resume service to Victoria on Nov. 8th.. of course, must be fully vaccinated and have a negative PCR test to board, this isn’t the AMHS. It’s international travel. I was up in Port Angeles on Labor Day weekend, wasn’t the same seeing the MV Coho tied up with nowhere to go. The test will provide a hurdle that will keep ridership low.

    Interesting story about Japan’s upcoming election. I still say, based on history and the structural imbalance of the Lower House, the LDP will win, it’s just a matter of how much. The LDP has had issues before but still pulled it out, but nothing like the COVID response.     One of the structural issues that benefits the LDP is they do better in rural areas, and the Lower House doesn’t get reapportioned to reflect a more urban population. Their defense is, the rural areas need those seats more than ever. Although some recent changes have happened, but it’s not once a decade reapportionment like with the U.S. House.

    Why is it apparently impossible for people to believe that it is in fact possible to declare War on a foreign criminal organization that is engaging in direct, hostile activity against the United States on the behalf of the Government of the Nation it is incorporated in and operating out of?

    Burns is a little too James Michener-like for my taste but I otherwise like him, and think he does good work. Criticisms I have seen:

    1. He sucks all of the oxygen out of a room. Promoting him and his films means promoting fewer up-and-comers. There was a DEI dust-up earlier this year. It’s what I found when I googled “Ken Burns controversy”.

    2. Plopping students in front of a TV screen for a dozen or so hours relieves teachers of the requirement to, you know, teach. The school board, and parents, should have a say here. That having been said, breaking him up into modules with discussion after each 20 minute module would be a very good solution.

    3. Students should read. Ken Burns reduces the likelihood that reading will be done, because he’s already put his version of details on the screen.

    Reading the poll crosstabs yesterday I began to think that McAuliffe still has this race. It’s not possible to compare 2021 early voter turnout to 2017 turnout because a big expansion of early voting has occurred since the last race.

    I read that minority turnout has been very good, but I also read that it’s not enough.

    More than a million people have voted early so far in Virginia.
    As of yesterday, those voters appeared to back Biden by nearly a 2 to 1 margin, based on a combination of voter file data from L2 and about 4k interviews of Virginia voters from earlier cycles

    Parents and independents who vote are increasingly supporting Youngkin. Youth and minority will go McAuliffe.

    The turnout will be a very interesting part of the story.

    Was listening to the CFL gamers on SiriusXM and Tune-in last night. The Canada Talks channel uses local feeds, in this case CHQR for the Stampeders and CHED for Edmonton Elks. The result, the BQ took over 50 seats, the Reform Party took about 50, and the PC,s went from 154 at dissolution, to just 2. It was Mulroney’s term until June of that year, but Campbell gets the blame. A term where Mulroney tried and failed to settle the issue over Quebec.

    The Liberals were not saints, by the way, ran some nasty ads in 1988 and 2006.
