    Afghan evacuation raises concerns about child trafficking

    WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials are looking into reports that in the frantic evacuation of desperate Afghans from Kabul, older men were admitted together with young girls they claimed as “brides” or otherwise sexually abused.

    U.S. officials at intake centers in the United Arab Emirates and in Wisconsin have identified numerous incidents in which Afghan girls have been presented to authorities as the “wives” of much older men. While child marriage is not uncommon in Afghanistan, the U.S. has strict policies against human trafficking that include prosecutions for offenders and sanctions for countries that don’t crack down on it.

    One internal document seen by The Associated Press says the State Department has sought “urgent guidance” from other agencies after purported child brides were brought to Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. Another document, described to the AP by officials familiar with it, says Afghan girls at a transit site in Abu Dhabi have alleged they have been raped by older men they were forced to marry in order to escape Afghanistan.

    Just read a letter from a Doc in Texas who was scheduling a surgical abortion this week for a patient whose medication abortion had failed. She had to meet with her to inform her about canceling and talk to her about options, all of which were very bleak. Lots of sobbing.

But that fact stands as a massive impediment to Republican aims right now. Again, I despise Republicans every bit as much as you do, for this reason. For the simple reason that it has now become plain as day they intend to directly intervene in upcoming elections to change results. Perhaps some day years from now they might take the a further logical step and do away elections altogether. But that honestly isn’t required or necessary. Long before that point they’ll have disqualified enough people from ballot access that it won’t matter.

    But that may be years or decades away. In the near term, and to take the next important steps, they need the means and the opportunity to directly intervene in state level election counting and change the outcome. Let’s face it, they already did in 2000. But the Court is too slow, and too unreliable of a mechanism. Party interest requires that the method be one controlled by true party loyalists. Guys that make Matt Shea look like a reasonable and even overly cautious person.

    They’re going to try some shit just like this next year. Hopefully it won’t matter too much. But I really doubt that given how much structural (slaveholder) advantage Republicans already possess in redistricting. They’re at least going to try to shift one or two House seats and maybe even a Senate seat if they can find the right states and opportunities. They’re going to issue some allegations of impropriety in some county in some state. Probably more than one. Their media flying monkeys will run wild with it. Hooting mobs of Qanon Shamen will descend armed with clubs, Grizzly Gas, and pipe bombs. Cops will do what cops always do and make it all so much worse. Somebody will die. The wider media will hand-wring and lament. Suburban Security Moms and NASCAR Dads will get scared. A Republican governor and a Republican legislature will step in to help them feel “safe”.

Not letting an unvaccinated firefighter work isn’t that much different from not letting a firefighter with a back injury work.

    But getting back to that liberty thing, you’re not necessarily at liberty to do whatever you want. You can’t fire a gun at your neighbor’s house. You can’t drive 60 mph in a school zone. At least not without potential consequences.

    There isn’t a real debate yet about mandatory vaccinations. We’re nowhere close to that. In this country, every individual can still choose whether to get vaccinated (excluding children under 12). Mandated vaccination may never come.

    Mr. Salas isn’t, strictly speaking, an anti-vaxxer. He’s a vax-refuser, which isn’t the same thing. He isn’t spreading lies and disinformation about vaccines. In that respect, he’s not a bad guy, just a guy who wants to be left alone.

    More power to him. He’ll increasingly be left alone. He won’t be able to board an airplane, get into a restaurant or sporting event, or walk into his grandchild’s school. That’s for the protection of others, not punishing him for the decision he made. We have a right to be protected from him. His liberty doesn’t extend to putting us in danger.

    So, his liberty, our safety, here’s how you reconcile the two: No shoes, no shirt, no vaccination, no service. He’s still a free man. In his house. And that’s as it should be.
