I don’t trust the polls on this one because I don’t think pollsters have any good statistically valid ways to model the turnout. It’s too much of a black swan.
But I do trust that turnout will be the deciding factor.
Democrats and lean-Democrat voters outnumber Republicans and lean-Republican voters 2 to 1. That’s a big difference from twenty years ago. So Newsom needs to turnout about half of his base, a lot less than what Davis needed in 2003, at a time when Davis was perceived as having betrayed the party.
Half the base is regarded by experts as pretty doable for a seasoned campaigner like Newsom who has successfully withstood five previous recalls. Davis only faced three recalls. If Newsom wins he will match Pete Wilson’s six recalls. And though time alone will only tell, he may even go on to surpass Schwarzenegger’s record of seven recalls.
