    One possibility is that the category “Independents” is being incorrectly defined. We know that there probably are more Independents than there are Democrats or Republicans. Hell, Gallup’s most recent poll on political affiliations has independents at 44%.

    And yet your unsourced claim that independents’ approval of Biden is “soaring” might be based on as little as one recent poll, The Even Bigger Fucking Moron. Let’s look at the Reuters/Ipsos poll, shall we? It’s the most recent one listed at RCP’s site.

    You get what you get. It would be scientifically invalid to discard responses because the respondents failed to affiliate with a party preference that you prefer. So a pollster must either weight the responses to adjust for population or in the case of a Bayesian model they apply a confidence interval or a credibility interval. So for example, if we know the population is about 50/50 men and women, but women respond to our poll at two time the rate of men, the our confidence interval for male response is lower and the credibility interval is higher.

    Another thing we know is that self-described “Independents” respond to these kinds of polls at a much lower rate than self-described partisans. That shouldn’t surprise anyone who isn’t a complete dumbshit. Now I’d agree that online polls, even scientific online polls like IPSOS are vulnerable. And I’d agree there are good reasons to avoid falling in love with any single poll, especially an online poll.

    But all of this smacks of still more Whaddaboutism. Even Teh Dumbfuck stupidly reveals her own deepest fears, when she insists that the pollster is somehow moving respondents from “Independent” to “Republican” somehow, which is both unfounded and would be a form of polling malpractice for sure. Instead, we know the reason for a response rate among Independents being much lower than their frequency within the target population is that they don’t like polling. But there’s no scientifically valid reason to that I’m aware of (and none on offer from Teh Dumbfuck) supporting any claim that “liberal leaning Independents” are more prone to respond to these kinds of surveys. None at all.

    So the shift in approval among the subset of the poll is a real signal.     But there are a couple of speculations (not much data still) about how this group of voters may be changing. One is that as more and more young people increase their participation in elections and come to be weighted differently in polls, their inclusion and weighting alone accounts for some shift. We do know that younger voters are more progressive. So if higher participation rates among younger voters is increasing their weighting in polls it would probably account for some shift, since some portion of those young voters will self-identify as “Independent”. Further complicating this is that younger voters are less likely to respond to some types of polling. Different polls account for this better or worse.

    But another speculation for which there is some data is that more recently activated young voters have a greater tendency to self-describe as “Independent” when responding to polls. This conforms to other normal behaviors we observe among young people in consumer research. The tendency to adopt “brand loyalty” is lesser among younger consumers and is seen to develop as people age and “settle” on certain choices.

    So, for example, when she was younger Tara may have been fairly undiscerning in her choice of ball gag or butt plug.
