“What riles up the Republican base now is fear of multiracial democracy, cancel culture, George Floyd protests, Black Lives Matter, censuring Dr. Seuss, critical race theory, constant, constant moral panic about the threat of those other people who either do not look like you or do not share your values taking power and wielding power the way that they dominate the institutions of American life outside of politics. That`s what it`s about. That culture war, whose culture it is, whose America it is, is what the base cares about.”
“Now, what could it possibly be about Joe Biden that does not inspire the same visceral ire of the Republican base that doesn`t render him toxic and threatening in the same way as those other two figures?”
>> That would be Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Biden is a safe white man who doesn’t terrify the republican base. That’s why democrats chose him.
Joe Biden, the 78- year-old white man is not a living embodiment of the existential threat that the Republican base fears. And that existential threat, that fear of the country being governed by people other than them broadly construed, that`s what they really care about.
The rest, they couldn`t care less.
>> The rest is what the republican party USED to stand for.
You can see this in the greedy racist incel. Vice President Harris is his existential threat. She is black, and a woman, in power. There is nothing more terrifying to him. Everything he writes about her, is to pull her down, to ridicule and vilify her, to make her less terrifying to him.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
White House and Congressional Democrats began talking about using a reconciliation bill to pass infrastructure the same week Biden was inaugurated. As early as February in preparation for March strategy meetings Moscow Mitch told his members that they should prepare for at least two budget reconciliation bills.
As early as anyone can remember Senate Republicans declared that they would never vote in favor of any legislation that touched the Trump Billionaire Tax Breaks. Just as early as anyone can remember Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema said they were ready and eager to support legislation to roll back those giveaways to the wealthy.
The only thing that was ever in any doubt was whether or not Manchin and Sinema would support using reconciliation to roll back the Trump budget boondoggle. But all early indications were that they would. Manchin however demanded that a path be provided for some part of the infrastructure spending to be passed via regular order. Presumably to benefit himself by demonstrating to his WV voters that he could do “bipartisan”, but also to benefit however many of his Republican Bipartisan Buddies™ he can convince to go along for the ride.
It’s up to Republicans if they want to piss that away. The only people they’ll be hurting are Manchin and Sinema (but really mostly just Manchin). Good ol’ Trailer Joe is about to find out who his real friends are, care of Moscow Mitch.

So-called “conservatives” are not interested in “better Democrats”. Because ultimately, at this stage of decay, “conservatives” in America are no longer interested in “better government” – as Democrats are now the only party with any claim to seeking better, more effective government.

Or is it a future freed from servitude to bask in an independent and self-sufficient comfort and luxury?
I’ve got bad news for you. People like you, desperate to defend your status and privilege have been making this same mistake since before Marx was born. The march of progress begun during The Age of Enlightenment that coincided with the industrial revolution has consistently broken down status and privilege, sometimes by improving conditions for everyone, and other times by exposing the stupid and wasteful fallacies underlying privilege.
Insisting that the children of “Leftists” will toil in servitude as penance for their parent’s “laziness” is a time-honored refrain going back at least as far as Egypt. It didn’t end well then either.

I believe the GOP number. Most Americans aren’t so deep in the weeds about things. They are generally approving of the way things are going. They approve of the President. And they approve of the Congress. They approve of Democrats. And they approve of Republicans. Vaccination rollout has been a smashing success. The American Rescue Plan was passed with widespread approval. And PPP, unemployment, and eviction relief have been extended, also with widespread approval. Overall Americans are hopeful again.
Even Republicans, despite having opposed almost all of that, stand to benefit from that approval. And that’s because the progress continues in spite of their efforts to block it. But also because there’s no election going on to focus America’s attention on parties and candidates. One great way to change that would be for Republicans to choose this moment to blow up the Bipartisan Infrastructure Agreement®.
Like I said before, “conservatives” only get to decide how badly they want to lose on all this.

The early signaling in the media that Manhattan DA will be filing criminal charges against the Trump companies this week is more than just media pimping (but it is certainly that also).
Criminal prosecutions of companies are as much about finance as they are about criminality, especially since the criminality is so often bound up in the company’s finances. Because of how highly leveraged these kinds of companies are (real estate) almost any filing of criminal indictments can trigger a cascade of potentially fatal financial consequences.
I imagine that Vance has been seeking negotiations toward a settlement in place of indictment, and perhaps has been getting push back. So putting this into the news this weekend is one way of getting the Trump companies to consider settlement of the charges more seriously and really begin considering some of the terms of settlement they might have to accept. Because otherwise they can be essentially liquidated by their own creditors.
And that’s the other reason for putting it into the news. To give all those creditors some advance notice about where this is heading. That’s out of fairness to them. But it’s certainly also strategic on Vance’s part, to enlist them in any efforts to bring Trump to the negotiating table.
For his part, and given his steadily declining status, Trump needs to either delay this process or to be seen to emerge from it with some kind of “win”. I can’t see what interest Vance would have in granting to him either of those two things. This is a power play. If it works Vance stands to become a national superstar having “defeated” Trump in his Trump’s arena on Trump’s terms and using Trump’s own methods. I suspect Vance will not be satisfied with anything less than Trump’s broad humiliation.

They are saying that Weiselberg individually, along with a number of other officers of the companies, both arranged for and accepted a broad array of non-monetary compensation for their services in order to avoid taxes including air travel, vacation accomodations, dining, but also including luxury housing in some cases. And that these are the individual criminal and civil charges the Manhattan DA has been using in order to obtain cooperating testimony in other charges against the companies and other officers of the companies.
Beyond that, the unnamed sources from the DA claim that the investigation has produced evidence of large number of wide ranging criminal tax frauds, insurance frauds, financial frauds, charitable conversions, and public frauds by the companies and the officers of the companies.
But be that as it may, just the mere filing of criminal charges against these officers and these companies would tend to trigger an immediate foreclosure of outstanding loans by most of their lenders – that’s a normal and customary feature of those lending and credit agreements. After that the first thing that happens is all the credit lines are frozen. Immediately after that they can’t meet payroll. Now I’ve seen some companies with really devoted workers who feel invested in the business stick around for one or two pay cycles – especially if the owners and senior managers are supportive bosses with good communication skills.
So I pretty much expect the Trump businesses to close within about 24 hours the minute they miss a payroll.
This is your party brand on Trump.

This is the kind of thing republicans and conservatives don’t want to expose young people to: For all of our good, this is our history also.
Slaveholders identified literacy as a direct threat to the institution of slavery and their economic dependency on the labor it provided. If enslaved people developed literacy, they would be able to learn their history and read the writings of abolitionists, on topics such as attempts to help people escape slave-holding territories, or regarding the 1791-1804 slave revolution in Haiti, or how the end of slavery came to the British Empire in 1833.
Following an enslaved people’s uprising led by abolitionist Nat Turner in 1831, some states went further and extended the education ban to free Black people as well.
A North Carolina law of 1831 stated in part: “Teaching slaves to read and write, tends to excite dissatisfaction in their minds, and to produce insurrection and rebellion.”
The Code of Virginia of 1849 was passed to prevent the enslaved from assembling for religious or educational purposes as legislators believed that education would lead to uprisings.
Slavers believed that literacy would understandably make enslaved people angry, dissatisfied, and rebellious.
As stated by a lawyer and clerk of the Supreme Court of the United States, Elias B. Caldwell: “The more you improve the condition of these people, the more you cultivate their minds, the more miserable you make them, in their present state,” he argued.

83,
Consider this: the New Deal legislation that ended most forms of childhood labor exploitation (FLSA) were widely predicted to have injurious effects on all kinds of industries and even poor communities.
And they did. They really did. At least in the short term.
So what?
What the fuck kind of monstrous society sends 12-year-olds down into pit mines to sweep up coal dust or crawl around on mill floors lubricating in-use high speed machinery if they don’t absolutely have to?
It certainly cost more to accomplish all those tasks by other means instead of exploiting children. Some required investments in improved processes and equipment. Others had to be performed by adults and paid appropriately. And it absolutely meant higher prices for consumers and at least initially lower sales and lower profits. It absolutely meant that those families lost that additional source of income from child labor exploitation, in the short term at least.
So what? As a society, even at the very deepest depths of The Great Depression, American society could easily afford to do better. But “the magical invisible hand of the free market” was simply unable to produce that widely desired outcome. It took government intervention and regulation to make it happen. Businesses and individuals could not do it until it was imposed as a basic, uniform operating condition on all competitors in an industry.
These things always cost more. That is not the issue.
We can easily afford it.

But to address your point: Instead of condemning the child labor practices of the past, you’ve gone 78 years into the past to dig up a “whataboutism.”
Which is your typical M.O., and goes far to explain why nobody here respects you.
What about this: Would today’s GOP repeal those child labor laws if they could? We know for sure they want a lower minimum wage for working teens.
And you’re all for it.

Doctor Dumbfuck is for exploiting workers, period. And today he makes clear that’s without age restrictions.
He can’t justify that, and doesn’t even try. Instead, he tries to create what’s known in military parlance as a “diversion.” Look over here, not there.
So far, he’s brought up:
1. A bicycle crash caused by a fan’s sign.
2. FDR’s executive order, driven in part by political pressure from white farmers eager to eliminate their Japanese-American competitors and expropriate their land, authorizing racist generals to set up exclusion zones and permitting them unbridled discretion to round up and incarcerate Japanese-Americans regardless of their citizenship or loyalty, which said generals promptly did.
This is by no means a complete list of doc’s diversionary tactics. If you keep talking about child labor, he’ll set off more firecrackers.

You’ve argued incessantly that raising the minimum wage “hurts the poor”, “hurts teens”, “hurts consumers”, and of course the biggest one “hurts profits”.
Yes, of course it does all those things. So what.
Refusing to violate the constitution and lock up “thousands and thousands” or our own citizens for having Japanese heritage would have had the consequence of exposing West Coast defenses to some espionage activities. German American, Austrian American, Italian American, and Soviet American immigrants did engage in criminal espionage against the U.S. during that same time frame.
So what?
You poor, poor thing. You’ve become so doctrinal and reactionary that you can’t even fucking figure out what you really want anymore, except “the opposite of whatever the Hippies want”.

You’re pathetic, Tara. And it’s getting worse.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
94,
Short term pain, long term benefits
Exactly. And the “short term pain” should be limited and mitigated by direct government efforts.
So if low income teens are deprived of some income opportunity the first thing to notice is that their net family income is actually increased by a $15 min wage. FLSA did the same thing ninety years ago. Little kids all lost their jobs (but kept their fingers). But Dad’s new job with pay raise and overtime more than covered it. Net gain in dollars and fingers. And if Tara’s precious fast food Obesity Burger costs more that’s okay too. She can afford it. And thanks to the $15/hr min wage so can everyone else.
America is a very successful country filled with very successful people. We’ve got people putting Infinity Pools in private jets. Even our suburban mall-rat tweens are successful. They spent over $200 million a year just for the privilege of dressing up an imaginary Kardashian in imaginary fashion accessories on their iPhones.
We can afford this. Easily.

Only a few months ago, things were so much worse in America that the Republican Senate Majority Leader conspired with the Republican U.S. Attorney General to employ the Department of Justice to prop up damaging lies about the most recent election in order to better their chances of holding onto the Senate majority.
Think about this: Six months ago we were still in the midst of the most corrupt presidential administration in U.S. history. Stories of law breaking, stealing from tax payers, nepotism, graft, and fraud at the highest levels of the Executive branch had become a daily routine. So much so that now even six months later we are still reading about the consequences and the efforts to unwind it all.
And yet at the same time six months into the new Biden/Harris administration nobody has been hired for a no-show job, nobody has beaten the shit out of their fiance or tried to fly NetJets to Paris for a cocaine weekend. Nobody is stealing to build a fake wall. Nobody is ordering $15,000 credenzas or offering to sell visas.
There is progress. Things do get better.
