    As I have been posting some updates on the latest season of the Handmaid’s Tale. Two Episodes left but since it’s been re-upped for a 5th Season, still expecting OfFred to go back to Gillead(stupid to do it, though) because for 3 and 1/2 seasons, it’s been implied she won’t leave without her first born daughter. She’s safely in Toronto for now, but without her daughter.

    One thing that is implied, the bulk of the military may have been compromised before the Fall by people connected to the extremists, and bolstered after the rise of Gillead with conscripts. They’ve seized the nukes, but probably not all. This is the latest map of Gillead(some are fan maps, some are from the producers as a promo), areas under full control in blue, contested in pink, and red for areas firmly controlled by the US Government, or anti-Gillead factions allied with it. I decided to see what units of Strategic Command could be controlled by Gillead, Atlantic Fleet SSBN’s probably were taken over, but Pacific Fleet SSBN’s could be reporting to the US Government. Air Force Global Strike Command, I would assume the Heavy Bombers of the 8th Air Force would potentially be Gilleads, but the immobile ICBMs of the 20th AF, Could be very different. 90th Missile Wing, based in Wyoming, definitely under Gillead control, 91st out of Minot, some LCCs may be in the red area on the map, might still be reporting to Anchorage. The wild card, 341st out of Malmstrom. In real life, all Minuteman units haven’t exactly had stellar proficiency reports.

    I’ve read the sequel, and it was interesting. The TV adaptation portrays Aunt Lydia, who supervises the handmaids asan enthusiastic supporter of the regime. In the Testaments, she only joined because it was better than being on the receiving end of the firing squad. Even though she was revered by Gillead, she’s been secretly plotting it’s downfall, slipping inside info to the resistance.

    Corporations have to speak up on all issues from social justice, income inequality, climate change and the enviornment, to false accusations by fascists. Their survival and livelyhood depends on it. Long term profits ride on it. The economy depends on them to do the right thing.

    Many companies, such as the company I work for, can’t say or have all these policies in place to benefit their workers, and procclaim to be the best place to work without getting more involved outside of their little sphere. They have to walk the walk and talk the talk, they do not do so by standing by in a time of turmoil and violtile change. To do so will only mean their demise.

    And yes….I didn’t read the articel linked. The headline just grabbed my attention and spurred my thought. I wouldn’t be surprised if somewhere in the article that general theme is made as a point.

    This really is not a thing.

    There are some very solid legal arguments suggesting that the DOJ assertion (in principle) of legal authority over former active duty for crimes committed post-separation is unconstitutional.

    And they appear poised to lose on at least some of those arguments in the next year or two.

    But probably more important are the circumstances here. DOJ does not want to create binding precedent if they don’t need to. And it’s a lot more likely to happen if the exact circumstances describe something that is not a crime outside of the UCMJ. Flynn’s intemperate and ideologically treasonous words are not criminal. The First Amendment really does protect a citizen’s right to express ideas that would encourage others form criminal intentions or criminal motivations.

    Even overt threats are protected, so long as they are not accompanied by specific words or deeds directed at producing imminent unlawful conduct. You can suggest argue and even demand that people should put burning bags of dog shit encircling Mar a Lago. And that is protected.

    You only get into trouble if you go beyond that and begin planning and organizing that effort. If you announced a time, place, and manner, for instance. Or take any specific steps to enable and carry out that effort IRL. But so long as you or Flynn limit your expressions to advocacy, even strident advocacy, then the expression is protected. And should be IMHO.

    Anyway, relax. Even though he’s too dumb to know it, Flynn is an ally. Every time one of these idiots says something like that it just proves the point that what Jan 6 was really about was destroying democracy. We need more prominent Republicans to say the quiet part out loud like him. It only helps reveal who and what they’ve become.

    I see no other path forward for him. Either he pays a huge judgement to Dominion for defaming the company. Or he burns through his entire amassed wealth trying to prove fraud that does not exist.

    The greatest irony in this is that at one time I think he had a chance to escape all this. There’s good chance that Dominion would be found to be a “public figure” and thus the legal standard for defamation would be “actual malice”. That’s a tough standard to overcome for a plaintiff without a smoking gun. But for Lindell the problem now is that whether or not any “smoking gun” evidence of actual malice ever existed before, it certainly exists now. By continuing to irrationally and very publicly pursue these claims of fraud, and repeatedly coming up not just empty, but with proof that the fraud he alleges simply does not exist, Lindell is creating that smoking gun every day.

    Look, I think it’s possible for an incontinent person to still be a capable leader in most fields. But what concerns me is that as you point out Steve, the only way this is even possible is if Trump is wearing special pull-up pants. And that implies some kind of relatively significant cognitive or neuromotor deficit. And even that might not be entirely disqualifying from a high office. But I think wiser voters would certainly want some explanation.

    It was just eight months ago that Trump was hospitalized and, as we now know, nearly died. I know a couple of people who have recovered, none as old as Trump. At least one of them is still having problems. Many, many much younger, healthier people who have recovered from a serious illness with COVID-19 are experiencing very severe lingering symptoms that include both cognitive and neuromotor deficits.

    He’s obviously moving around okay. And he can still read a teleprompter just fine. But this is a 90 second public address. And by the end of it the mush-mouth slur is back, he’s sweating, and leaning his entire weight on the podium. And there’s really no telling what he’s been pumped full of in order to pull off this performance. But urinary incontinence and loss of motor control is certainly a common side effect for the kinds of pharmaceuticals and narcotics Trump has a history of abusing. We may be seeing him in his final years of decline.

    Snopes is now debunking the PantsGate claim that Trump’s pants were “backwards”.

    I’d agree with that. My careful watching of the original feed video indicated to me that there was some kind of fly looking seam on the front, that appeared to be altered or badly shopped in one of the tweets going around.

    But Snopes just completely blew past the real issue that everyone in the convention hall noticed, including the media present. There was so much bulging and puffiness surrounding Trump’s bikini area that it made the fit of his slacks very weird. Part of that was him probably sitting too long in a hot limo sweating in his lap. But there appeared to be a substantial volume of something surrounding his junk and his ass. Billowing. Blown out. Loaded.

    I’m pretty convinced the diaper claims that have dogged the old guy for years and years are in fact entirely true. And beyond that, his overall condition seemed very poor. Emotionally and physically Trump was struggling. And he was clearly wearing a diaper.
    So naturally Bob thinks he’d make a fine Speaker. Of course.

    Anyway, save a kind thought for the poor Secret Service folks who must spend the next several years sitting down to every single meal with that smell stuck in their noses. It ain’t right.

    Well, you were off by only about 88.5 minutes. It was a 90 minute +/- address. At the end of it his cheeks reflected the lights a bit. For much of the address he did, in fact, have both hands on the podium – he’s 6’4″. Other than that, he had the same off-the-cuff presence he had for four years.

    2022 is a long way off, a lot can change between now and then and I don’t think the house will flip and I’ve never said it would.

    Mexican Midterms showing Obredor’s MORENA party will fall just short of the Supermajority in the Chamber of Deputies, at 265-292 seats. A supermajority is needed to push through Constitutional changes, but their Consitution forbids a party from having more than 300 seats in the 500 seat chamber. The Senate was not on the ballot, as no staggered terms. MORENA is expected to make gains on the governorships.
