    There is also growing evidence — both anecdotal and in surveys — that a lot of people want to do something different with their lives than they did before the pandemic. The coronavirus outbreak has had a dramatic psychological effect on workers, and people are reassessing what they want to do and how they want to work, whether in an office, at home or some hybrid combination.

    A Pew Research Center survey this year found that 66 percent of the unemployed had “seriously considered” changing their field of work, a far greater percentage than during the Great Recession. People who used to work in restaurants or travel are finding higher-paying jobs in warehouses or real estate, for example. Or they want to a job that is more stable and less likely to be exposed to the coronavirus — or any other deadly virus down the road. Consider that grocery stores shed over 49,000 workers in April and nursing care facilities lost nearly 20,000.

    A telling comment “I would have no problem working in hospitality/service fields if I could also afford a 1 bedroom apartment, feed myself, and enjoy my leisure time.”

    There isn’t a “labor shortage” there is definitely a wage shortage. So just because people are offering minimum wage jobs doesn’t make it possible to live off of them, and people know that.

    I remember Trump had some mean tweets about Mayor Khan, after he made remarks during a terror attack about it being just one of the things you put up with living in the city. Thought Trump would be ready to mock Saddiq Khan again, but they’ve just declared the race for Mayor of Greater London, Khan re-elected.

    I was following Greater Manchester because the Labor Incumbent is moving to put bus services under the franchise model, like London. Ironically using powers granted by the Tories. Although there are worse examples of the Thatcher era system than in Manchester. The privatized/deregulated model, it was a free for all, instead of a network, had multiple options on the profitable corridors, and local councils had to bribe operators to work the non-profitable ones.

    I was in a Home Depot today, and noticed a single utility-grade 2×4 now costs more than the federal hourly minimum wage.

The number willing to work for red-state minimum wages is nearly zero.     I believe the point is that there exist a vast swath of ridiculous “business” deductions that are both abused and barely examined, offer no value to society or the common weal, and have been traditionally carved out via industry lobbyists to secretly tilt the playing field.

    For example, there’s no sound argument I can think of why offering *any* deduction for business entertainment benefits society. There are only arguments in favor of maintaining the existing deduction. And they are all indirect arguments citing local disruption and individualized impacts. Restaurants have only existed for a couple of hundred years. And for all but the last few decades almost the entire industry was devoted to feeding travelers and the workers. Society does not benefit by the existence of Ruth’s Chris.

    And yet you defend it. It’s just stunning how utterly debased you are now.

The NRCC’s own polling indicates that Trump’s disapproval is currently running 2 to 1 among likely midterm voters in battleground districts.

    With Cheri Bustos defenestrated the campaign emphasis will center on an embrace of the Biden presidency and the party contrast brand, jobs, pandemic recovery, infrastructure, and kitchen table issues like high quality child care and access to health care. Shy Democrats running in lean Trump districts will only get assistance if they embrace the brand and focus on turning out support. Pandering to Trump voters is not on the menu.

    And so long as the GOP continue to insist that their only way forward is through Trump, the plan should work out well. Trump will help them produce $20 clicks and energetic crowds of fur bikini maskholes and anti-VAX terrorists. But he will kill them with suburban moderates and he will help drive turnout among low propensity progressive voters. For once Democrats actually appear interested in trying to win and grow in an off year.

    The only dark cloud is ballot access. But even in the face of Republican state efforts to strip voting rights and ballot access, there’s a good chance that can be dealt with in the midterm. Voting restrictions like those created by Republican legislatures tend to be most effective in statewide races. At the level of a congressional district they are far less predictable or controllable. And there’s no electoral college effect. It’s a big problem for 2024. But not as much for 2022.

    P.S., that businessman’s private jet goes through $1,000 about every 10 minutes, or less, all of which is deductible from his taxes. So if he flies 50 hours per month to inspect his real estate holdings in Bermuda and take care of corporate paperwork in Cayman Islands, he’s getting the washer woman’s standard deduction 300 times, or more, per month.

    P.P.S., people who itemize, e.g. those with large medical expenses because they foolishly live in red states, can’t deduct their transportation to work. But billionaires can, to wherever their “work” happens to take them.
