The best part of Episode 10 is this clip, where at about a minute in, the Handshake in Space is being celebrated in Mission Control, while nobody is watching on tv, as warheads are about to fly , air raid sirens are blaring, and President Reagan is aboard Air Force One being used in the NEACP role.

    Late next month, WashDoT and Amtrak will be restoring more trips suspended since the pandemic started. Also this week, Amtrak announced an order for new train sets to replace Amfleet coaches, as well as the Cascades Talgos. I will miss the latter, although the Siemens Venture may lack the Talgos tilt system, BNSF will supposedly allow Single level coaches to run at Talgo speeds.

    There’s a thing in WaPo this morning about the GOP “establishment” rallying around Liz Cheney following her impeachment vote. It describes a fairly small handful of nationally recognizable names with pedigrees. Romney, Ryan, her parents, Moscow Mitch, some Bushes, Lindsay Graham, etc.

    And it really got me thinking. It sets this thing up as some kind of extant internal struggle for “the heart and soul” of the Republican Party. But that premise depends on recognizing these people as “the establishment”. Are they? Do people like Mitch McConnell, Mitt Romney, or Paul Ryan actually represent a dominant, entrenched, or elite paradigm currently operating within the GOP?

    I think the idea is frankly laughable at this point. If there ever was such a struggle it took place five years ago and these people lost.
    Badly.
    And they know it. It’s why McCarthy has abandoned Cheney and kissed the ring. People like Romney, McConnell, and Graham can afford to carve their own path. And Ryan is irrelevant. All of them are essentially retired at this point.

    These are not the “establishment Republicans” of today.

    These are.

    The media continuing to offer this pretense that there is some “older more familiar, more comfortable” version of “conservatism” that is still viable within the party politically only serves to hasten the decline of those old values. Because make no mistake, the “conservative” future does not belong to Liz Cheney, or Paul Ryan, or Adam Kinzinger. At Trump’s direction Cheney is abandoned by her caucus and her leadership. And people like Josh Hawley, Matt Gaetz, and Dan Bongino represent the new “establishment” of the GOP.

    We want a corrupt criminal justice system. We want dirty cops, willing to plant or destroy evidence, coach witnesses, and swear false statements. We make heroes out of them in movies, books and television.

    And we want cops who are willing to employ that corruption targeting the people who scare us the most, whether they are black, or brown, or muslim, or poor, or young, or whatever. Even if it doesn’t come to them by nature, the system and their peers will pound it into them.

    What exactly is a young police officer in a place like Shreveport supposed to make of a law that criminalizes sagging pants? As dumb as most cops are, they aren’t that dumb.

    If we really want police to change, we all have to change first. And that isn’t going to happen overnight, or even in five or ten years. It just won’t. So the only ethical thing we can do until then is reduce encounters between citizens and cops in general and drastically dismantle the system of laws and incarceration we ask them to enforce. There isn’t going to be any other way. We will not train them to act justly in a fundamentally unjust system.

    Prior to this last presidential election I’d have honestly said that Republicans had a shot in Virginia. Of course, they’d have needed to run a completely different campaign, and perhaps a different type of candidate. But it’s a state that elected Republican governors for thirty five years straight until just a few years ago. And it has been a solid get for Republican presidential candidates since the civil rights era up until Obama.

    I guess this just goes to show. It’s thirteen EVs and a fairly influential governorship. And the modern “establishment” of the GQP has no use for it. Since the GQP embraced The Mighty God Emperor Trump the VA burbs have been shifting hard.     Watching the Season Finale of For All Mankind, I was surprised they included Dr. Sally Ride in the timeline. In the show, the first American Woman in space flew on Apollo 15.. Dr. Ride is one of the mission specialists on the new Space Shuttle Pathfinder, and due to the U.S. scrapping the Outer Space Treaty, it’s armed. In the end of Season 2, the Soviets blockaded the moon to prevent offensive weapons from reaching it.(Turns out we already had a reactor producing weapons grade plutonium on the moon) Pathfinder was face to face with an armed version of the real life Soviet Space Shuttle Buran, on the Dark Side of the Moon. WW3 is averted by a combination of Ride pulling a gun on the pilot to stop him from firing missiles at Buran, and the pilot deciding instead to shoot down the unmanned Sea Dragon supply ship the Soviets were threatening to shoot down.

    I loved how the Men and Women in Mission Control are given the option of the Bomb Shelter, only one guy chooses it. If he’s still around in season 3, he’s not going to live it down. The Mexican woman engineer had her own reason for staying, needed the job or faced deportation. In season 1 episode 1, she’s crossing the Rio Grande with her father as Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins are en route to the Moon.

    Ronald Moore has outdone himself this time. The Space Race we never got, plus a joint mission set against rising geopolitical tensions. One of the reasons Apollo was rolled out one last time, was the Soviets knew everything about it, so the least technology was being compromised.

    One of the astronauts killed stopping the meltdown of the reactor, ironically before the Soviets put a woman on the Moon, was a housewife.     GE is one of my larger positions, and I’m comfortable with the idea of holding onto it. If you presently own it, you shouldn’t panic and sell it, and I think the current share price is a buying opportunity if you have the patience to wait 2 or 3 years for returns to materialize. It’s a solid company today and I think it will emerge from this transition as a stronger company down the road.
