    And an observation about the so-called controversy surrounding the notion of the “Shy-Trumper” not appearing in polls –

    Aside from a relatively small number of very outspoken lifelong Republican “Never-Trumpers” we hear very little being said in terms of poll analysis about Republican voters who voted for Trump in 2016 but will decline to do so this year.

    There’s nothing in early voting data to give an indication of who these voters might be, or how numerous they are. And yet speculation about their numbers and influence on polls is just as valid, if not more so, as the “Shy-Trumper” theory.

    Voters of a given party have a well observed tendency to respond to their leaders and elites. So far the largest number of most outspoken “Never-Trumpers” have come from the fringes of conservative political life. Not a single Republican US Senator or House Member has been willing to openly and actively oppose Trump’s re-election. Only 2 out of 250 Republican members of Congress have very reluctantly admitted that they will not vote for him. Every single other Republican in Congress has signed on for the campaign

    It’s perfectly reasonable to surmise that a great many conservatives who have regularly voted for Republicans all their lives, and who work and socialize regularly with like-minded conservatives would be highly reluctant to announce to the world that they intend to either not vote at all, or to vote for a Democrat. Withholding their support is described by the GOP as betrayal and would be seen as such by their peer group. We might think of these voters as “Shy-Never-Trumpers”.

    I can see absolutely no reason to conclude that “Shy-Never-Trumpers” are less likely to exist than “Shy-Trumpers”. And their existence is predicated on the exact same set of assumptions about social conformity. Not can I see anything in any of the data to suggest that their numbers, if either group exists, would be any less significant. On the contrary, there is some data suggesting their numbers might be even greater, and some logic to conclude that the social conformity pressures these voters face might be even greater.

    Dumbfucks give random, scarce, and frankly not-well-publicized examples of Trumpalos facing community scorn or even vandalism. While simultaneously the media have been filled with reports of employers terminating and threatening to terminate employees for not supporting Trump’s re-election. Otherwise non-partisan and non-political clubs and social organizations have been discovered threatening members with exclusion. Highly orchestrated nationwide campaigns of robo-calling, texting, and social media messaging have been deployed threatening criminal investigations, targeting, harassment, and violence at voters who might not support Trump’s re-election. And particularly in our nation’s suburbs, long a stronghold of Republican electoral reserve, neighborhoods have become polarized as demographic changes and transformations have created new frictions leading to even greater demands for conformity.

    Personally, I think it’s all bullshit. I don’t think significant numbers of Trump supporters are successfully concealing that support from pollsters any more than I think significant numbers of Trump opponents are concealing that opposition. I’m sure it happens. Just look at the Daily Show bit above about “undecided voters”. But these are not randomly selected respondents. They are sought out specifically because they claim to be “undecided”. And as it turns out nearly every one is already decided after all. Their reluctance to “own” their decision has more to do with the attention it gives them. And oh look. All but one of them is in fact a Biden voter.

    These are polling firms who routinely plug in bizarre and completely unscientific weighting that produces unicorn results within the crosstabs, like a third of Black voters supporting Trump, or 40% of 18 to 25 supporting Trump, or 20% of Kelly supporters crossing over to vote Trump. And RCP makes no distinctions with respect to polling history and polling error when producing their averages.

    It’s clearly a very close race and there are many unknowns. And it is possible that there will be a huge and unprecedented election day turnout that skews hard toward the GOP and brings Trump the prize of 29 EVs that are crucial to his chances. But it’s an enormously high stakes variable considering that there is no path for a Trump/GOP victory that does not include Florida, and that a Florida win is very, very uncertain for the GOP right now.

    Mathematically, high turnout does not favor the GOP. Never has in modern elections. 2020 so far does not appear to be an exception.
