    Ah the delicious irony! A feast is being laid for us by years of Clownsurvaturd Authoritarian Idiocracy.

    Bands of heavily armed 3%ers from fairly heavily forested more rural counties have gunned up and traveled in to outlying areas of Multnomah County in Oregon to set up illegal “checkpoints” on major state highways. Now Multnomah County Sheriff’s Deputies are being re-deployed back into the urban core to deal with it and prevent more Trump mayhem, leaving areas threatened by fire and looting unprotected.

    Agencies like this one in particular have cultivated and protected these armed vigilante groups for many, many years (some Deputies have even joined). Perhaps the even greater irony is the very high percentage of Sheriff’s dept employees who also reside in the now unprotected rural areas of Multnomah and surrounding counties.

    Reap what you sow, I guess. But it’s a real shame for all the decent people who never supported any of this para-military idiocy who now may lose homes, structures, and lives because critical resources are being diverted to deal with Beer-drunk Trumplos huffing pure, unadulterated Facebook ANTIFA.

    Moment perfectly captured: Western Oregon emergency management agencies sending out pleadings to local citizens (gun-humper lunatics) to ignore Facebook memes spreading false rumors about looting on… wait for it… Facebook.

    Here’s why it won’t happen. And rather perfectly illustrates how authoritarian loving Trumpalos so utterly misunderstand what police do.

    These Seattle residential neighborhoods, and even their business districts are still full of locals going about their business, jogging, walking dogs, going for coffee, grabbing take-out, stopping by to chat with neighbors (outside, masked, socially distanced), and running errands between Zoom meetings. The huge risk to areas in non-residential business and government cores arises when they are emptied out of people. People, more than police, are what keep an area safe.

    And it’s not the pants-shitting gun-clutching of fools like the McCloskeys. It’s far more prosaic than any modern American Gothic. It’s what makes a community. Take out the people and community ceases to exist. But what fills the space left behind is often destructive, or at least exploitative. And it’s never been exclusive to urban business cores. Tens of thousands of little main streets saw this in the 70s with the rise of suburban malls. You can see it today along US 192 just a few miles east of Disney World. There’s been no shortage of violent, militarized police in these areas. They just don’t make a difference. I think people are finally starting to see that.

    Perhaps the difference is the extent to which different neighborhoods are composed of residents who give a shit about the neighborhood. An example:

    Despite it being labelled a hate crime and the FBI being called in to investigate, the perpetrator of this heinous act was never caught.

    Biggest difference between Queen Anne and Capital Hill? Rate of resident ownership. How does that make a difference? Try asking Ludger Szmania or Caspar Donier, or anyone else who ever sought to obtain or expand a service license in Magnolia and faced the opposition of The Club. Pre-COVID licensed seating in Magnolia, not including Palisade (because that’s stupid) never rose higher than 400. Capital Hill? Thirty times that. This is just one narrow slice of the “systemic” thing. Some neighborhoods get targeted for heavy licensing for lots of historical reasons. But things like that change the understanding of “community” with respect to ANY neighborhood, regardless of the ethnic or racial demography. Skip on over to Magnolia next time you are allowed to attend an M’s game and see how many fast food or convenience stores you can find (no, don’t count the 7-Eleven on 15th in Interbay, also stupid).

    You don’t get the same degree of community development and engagement in a neighborhood like Capital Hill as you get in Magnolia (or Queen Anne, or Ballard). And that is no accident. And that’s also why you see quasi militarized hyper-aggressive police being garrisoned in neighborhoods like Capital Hill, and why people in Magnolia never see patrol units except heading to or from Discovery Park or going code 7. And the presence of police in Capital Hill does not contribute to community development or community engagement. It’s another self-licking ice cream cone.

    And it isn’t because a bunch of lawyers and television people are “better” human beings somehow. It’s because Magnolia was and is built as a restricted community enclave within the city. Since at least WWII zoning is restricted, development is restricted, and use is restricted. But Interbay has always and historically been a different animal, with plenty of concentrated light industrial uses, and until recently very little in the way of residential development. Perhaps the day is soon to arrive where a real sense of community engagement arises in Interbay now that people live there as well as work there.

    I gotta go look for my copy of Magnolia: Memories and Milestones Here’s a good one: Head up Dravus to 29th there’s a little brick house on the corner behind the Presbyterian church that used to serve as a rectory. In the 20s that was the neighborhood speakeasy. It was the only place in Magnolia anyone could get a drink even after prohibition. If you wanted to drink you went to Ballard. Cops kept it that way right on up to the 1960s. Cops used to retire in Magnolia. The east slope overlooking the yard and the BNSF offices used to be full of retired cops and fire fighters. Cops are very different now. SPD has cops who commute from California.

    LA Sheriff doubles down this morning on the unlawful false arrest of NPR reporter at the hospital treating wounded Deps yesterday.

    While these are not sworn statements, as Sheriff they are official statements. His insistence on clinging to false statements clearly contradicted by the dozens of video records of the arrest will preclude the state from proceeding with any criminal charges against Huang. But they will also open LA county tax payers up to damages resulting from the false statements and the arrest itself. If it can be shown that the Deps were not acting under lawful authority proceeding from probable cause when they arrested Huang (violently, resulting in multiple injuries) then in CA they can be sued. If Villanueva’s false statements can be shown to have been made with the intention of furthering a conspiracy to violate Huang’s civil rights pursuant to the unlawful arrest then it expands the tort to include those additional civil rights.

    This is Compton. Villanueva has a huge problem in Compton. He’s demonstrated that he is incompetent in the face of the widespread corruption and criminal gang affiliations in his own agency.     I am very pleased to announce that today the Governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem (Trump) along with the South Dakota Dept. of Public Safety is actively engaged in what appears to be the criminal coverup of a hit-and-run homicide Saturday night by the South Dakota Attorney General as he was driving home from a GOP fundraising dinner where plenty of alcohol was served and consumed.

    Attorney General Ravnsborg appears to have left the scene, traveled home, waited some considerable length of time, before finally calling DPS and reporting that he “hit a deer”, as one does when one has “hit a deer”. Noem has injected herself into the fiasco by releasing a series of press statements at least initially backing the AG’s story.

    I only bring this up to make a point about one of our Trolls4Trump and his habit of crawling the internet for examples of minor Democratic officials fixing parking tickets or misusing the office mail meter. Here we have a homicide. A fairly naked effort to obstruct. Obvious lies in furtherance of that effort. Inexplicable gaps and omissions in what is an otherwise routine type of criminal investigation. All taking place at the highest levels of a state government run by a rising star Republican.

    This isn’t a fucking parking ticket. And it isn’t some indiscretion being “ignored” by partisans. If this is what it appears to be it’s a criminal cover up of a homicide being facilitated at the very top of South Dakota state government. And because it’s South Dakota, and because it’s Republicans doing the dirt instead of Democrats, it will not be pumped up to Crazy Uncle Liberty Q anon proportions and get discussed on network news.

    @77 I haven’t finished reading the book and I may be Johnny come lately, but I am a 1/4 of the way through reading The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace by Jeff Hobbs.

    Maybe by the end of the book I will no whether it was ever proven to be true or false, but the boy’s father was convicted of a double murder but there was no motive to the killings; it appears that police may have planted the murder weapon on the father.

    The book is a great book. If anyone hasn’t read it, I would recommend it be a book that you do read.

    It give you an eye opener of growing up in the hood. I’ve always told people that if I (or they) grew up in the Projects that I (or they) would be different people. We are a product of our environment…..something repukes can’t come to terms with.
