In testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said that all of the irregularities and short cuts exposed in recent Justice Department reviews were kept from him when he signed the warrant applications into that campaign aide, Carter Page. Had he known about them at the time, he said, he would have never signed them.

    Rosenstein even reluctantly acknowledged that his own August 2017 memo specifying the parameters of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation was deeply flawed.

    By August 2017, it was clear that there was no support for “the whole concept that the campaign was colluding with the Russians,” said Senator Lindsey Graham at the hearing. “There was no there there.”

    “I agree with that general statement,” Rosenstein responded.

    In terms of event production I’m told that with enough money anything is possible. But options become significantly constrained. They will spend more and get less, in nearly every respect (a Trump hospitality specialty). To be sure, the hotels and restaurants in whatever the fuck city will appreciate their business… maybe… up to a point. Depending on where, and what recovery phase the city is in, many dining establishments will not be able to accommodate normal numbers. It is expected that all levels of service will be impacted downward.

    So attendees must come prepared for an entirely different experience involving less staff, less assistance and service, and some pretty significant operational changes. At the convention itself arrivals, departures, location, and movement of attendees will have to be strictly timed, managed, and restricted. And “important” people will be forced to accept limitations and restrictions they are entirely unaccustomed to. There will be complaints and melt-downs. And being as these are Rapepublicans, they will fuck it all up.

    So many of the convention attendees will be dining casual, box meals, etc. or dining in private reserved dining rooms. There will be a lot less casual mixing and mingling, maybe none at all. Informal lobbying opportunities will be all but eliminated and perhaps replaced entirely with private hospitality suites and exclusive private dinners. “The Little People” of the party will be more or less left out in the cold. And the VIPs will be frustrated and disappointed with facilities, service, etc, but will be expected to put on a brave face and sing The Boss’ praises.

    And they will spend 50 to 80% more money at every level. Leaving party and county orgs in “less red” places financially hurting.

    But it’s all for a good cause after all, making sure that Stupid Hitler and the Rapepublican defeat is as grotesquely debasing and humiliating as possible. And as a kind of bonus, the event industry appears ready to go to school on these dumbshits.

    It all has to do with comparative risk. A firearm is a machine designed to make large holes in things from a safe distance. In the United States they are very frequently used to make large holes in small school children. The public may consider that to be a greater risk.

    The money argument works better when you tie the funding of the department to liability cost and attach reduction in liability and citizen complaints as a performance metric to the budget, just like any well run business would do. You probably don’t know it, but your city pays for police liability protection as part of an overall blanket policy, even though police (and jails) account for the overwhelming majority of costs in many cities.

    When the number of officers funded, at each level of rank, along with program funding, and equipment funding, is all tied to sensible performance metrics that included reduced citizen complaints and reduced civil liability, then the elected officials, the police, their command staff, and everyone share a common goal.

Then you’d have a sort of arms race in which the states keep splitting themselves into ever more, and smaller, counties in an effort to get an advantage in presidential elections*; until eventually we would have 330,000,000 counties in the United States, each with a population of 1 person. What you’d have then is … election of the president by popular vote.

    * Unlike states, which are created by Congress, counties are created by states, and Congress has no say over it. Thus, states could create as many counties as they wanted to, and it would be in their self-interest to do so.

    The bulk of this essay consists of a long form plea to excuse police sport-murder by considering all the good. Should we forgive Andreas Lubitz for flying a Germanwings A320 with 150 souls on board into the Massif des Trois-Évêchés because of all the previous times he landed safely, how well liked he was by other crew, or how he gave his time to coach soccer?

    I’m not even sure anybody else gets the kind of consideration the author here seems to be asking for. “Losing your temper” is the sort of thing that gets people fired all the time irl, or at the very least, an LOA, checked in to recovery, counseling, suspension, etc.

    But let’s not cheapen this by calling what happened to George Floyd, or Breanna Taylor, or Tamir Rice “losing ones temper”.

    The author of this essay should not be in police work. And I say that confidently without regard for how many speeding tickets he writes. If he compares his daily struggle to “not lose his temper” with “being superhuman” then it is only a matter of time before one of those speeding citations goes terribly wrong.
