357. There is an echo of truth to what you posted. My husband was a dark black man. I got to experience the reflected racism of the NW when I was out and about with him. I did see him get watched in stores. There was a little gas station on 99 run by a hard faced Chinese couple. They littlerally stalked him from isle to isle. I could have stolen the store while they were focused on him.
He had to work twice as hard to be considered as good as his white counterparts. For example, he serviced AFLAC accounts and doing great at it. But it bothered him terrifically that he couldn’t open new businesses. He’d work and work and work and then a pretty blonde white female co worker would come in and close the deal he set up with management. He had to be dressed well at all time when he left the house or clerks and business would dismiss him. The Puget Sound cared about class and money and they would be nice to anyone who seemed rich. If you didn’t seem poor regardless of your skin tone, people there didn’t hassle you.
The pacific Northwest had problems, HOWEVER, he moved here for the opportunities. For as frustrating and petty the NW locals were, it was nothing compared to Missouri. He was considered an nigger in Missouri and nothing he did would change that. People in the NW may not like black people but they would at least grudgingly deal with a black person. They would lose social standing if they were overtly racist. While He was followed in NW stores, he simply was not able to go into certain white parts of town in Missouri. When we moved to Missouri, I remember one blond bimbo taking one look at my husband, me and our son and flat out saying the apartment is not available and we should be looking in north st Louis. So let me ask you a simple question. Were you living in rural Missouri or big city Missouri? I worked in KC suburbs a couple of times over the years. My sister and family lived in Chesterfield outside of St Louis for years and never had a problem. Her husband was almost as black as the border below and she is just a little bit darker than the off white space on the screen that you type in your entry with non-brown eyes. People walk up to her and speak Spanish when she answers in French or Spanish they look at her strange because there is no anglo accent. He was up in the mgmt chain at A-B. Now when he went to work in Providence RI at the C-level things were much more contentious with those Rhode Island whites in the gated neighborhood where they purchased a house until they found out who he was and whom he worked for. Then they put the knives away. That’s what we experienced over the years with northern racism.
