    Republicans have been stalwart figures in many ways at the center of American social and cultural life going back at least to Eisenhower in terms of being “celebrated” as American archetypes.

    But that’s over. They are not even funny anymore. One of the most interesting phenomena in the last four years has been watching comedians and social satirists struggling to parody, or really make any sort of humor out of Trumpism. Nothing works because there are no boundaries with him or with them.

    He told them to try injecting themselves with bleach.

    And they are not just okay with it. They support it.

    In the end you can’t make any of that funny. It’s a Jonestown cult. It’s a fly-covered pile of bloated bodies in a clearing in the jungle.
    If we remember them at all it will be with sadness and maybe a little regret.

    But they did this entirely to themselves. One thing you can be sure they will do is whine. And in time that whining will come to define them. It will be a whining born of a sense of great social injustice not unlike “The Lost Cause”. And in many ways Republicans have made themselves the natural heirs to the Confederacy. And like the Confederacy before them, they will create a mythology to deny their self-destruction and to glorify it.

    I suspect that with time, Trump like Nixon before him, will become a figure of cult-like hero worship for them. And perhaps Trump brands will join the ranks of the Stars and Bars and the Gadsden flag as misappropriated symbols used to target them with marketing. Trump, the Republican party, and the elephant logo will become narrow cast marketing symbols used to sell penis elixir, comfort insoles, and MyPillow.

I’m so sick of hearing those reporters with their snarky irrelevant questions, always trying to get in the ‘gotcha’ and hog all the cameras all the time! It’s about time Trump stopped being so reasonable and put the smackdown on them for a change!”

    Now, everyone watched the same press briefings and I for sure didn’t see any uppity reporter asking an impertinent and irrelevant question of a long-suffering Fat Donny, but THEY did, and all they hear is is Fauci rudely cutting Trump off, contradicting him and just trying to grandstand in front of the press and take all the glory for himself. What they see is Trump resolutely and bravely leading our country through the darkness.

    I still get confused about this. I hear the argument that the Press is lying, and yet the commenters cannot point out where the actual lie was, what specific statement made was false, or even what the implications of those lies would be. Fat Donny openly lies about it (and everything else) every day. Fat Donny said his administration was responding to it very well and our cases were going down.

    That was 2 days ago.

    I’m sure that there are other politicians and bureaucrats from both parties standing there and and lying about it every day. China is doing nothing that we haven’t done and more recently. But the reality is that the Fat Donny administration is acting just like the Chinese Government. Obfuscating, lying, downplaying, accusing the opposition of basically “stirring up trouble” and using that as an excuse to defame the opposition, with the implication that this should be dealt with somehow.

    And this is where I get confused. We know China has an authoritarian regime that uses propaganda and suppresses free speech, clamping down on criticism when those criticisms contradict the party line, and this serves the purpose of keeping them in Power. Yet, we go about pretending to be shocked at the fact that they weren’t telling the truth.

    I say shocked, when I mean maintaining that illusion of being shocked, considering the fact that back on Jan 24th Fat Donny praised China and Xi for their transparency. We’ve all seen the tweets. We we were depending on them to tell us about this new disease, they told us it existed in December, but were dithering on how dangerous it was. You know this became apparent when they shut down Wuhan and the surrounding province, a population of 11 million people, back on the 23rd of January. But again, we know we can’t trust them, but we were relying on them simply because we didn’t have our own team in place to measure the veracity of the information they were disseminating.

    You know, maybe it would be better if we didn’t rely on an authoritarian regime for information. Perhaps if we had our own people looking into things like this, that being teams of people that are tasked with monitoring other countries health systems as well, it would be possible to get some “distant early warning” and just maybe, they can get to the bottom of these things, perhaps even before they can go out of all hope for mitigation.

    Perhaps it would also be possible to have a pre-established group of experts here at home to funnel all that information to. Since this is in fact a matter of national security, appoint someone to the NSC to coordinate all of this and pass important info to the President. Then we could listen to China and have a means to verify the facts with our own information and develop out own strategies for responding to the crisis.

    Oh, yeah. We had all of that and Fat Donny fired them simply because they wouldn’t kiss his ass. They wouldn’t use their positions to Praise him with Great Praise.

    This is entirely Trumps fault. No one else’s. The buck stops with him. He instead, chose to use the situation to grift, rob and loot the systems for his own personal purposes, political and financial.

    We had a team of people in China watching explicitly for novel coronaviruses. Real experts, epidemiologists, virologists etc, people with actual, genuine expertise in their respective fields. People who could report to us and get around Xi’s bullshit.

    Trump fired them. Remember?

    He fired them because they wouldn’t toady up. They wouldn’t respond favorably to his words. They wouldn’t back his bullshit up. They wouldn’t LIE for him.
