Democrats are pushing back at GOP backlash over a controversial line in House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff’s (D-Calif.) closing statement in Friday night’s impeachment trial arguments.
Schiff sparked an audible reaction from Republicans when he referenced a CBS News report that cited an anonymous Trump confidant saying GOP senators’ heads would be “on a pike” if they opposed President Trump on impeachment.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has opened up a 7-point lead in Iowa, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll released Saturday, a strong showing in a volatile primary battle just over a week away from the state’s caucuses.
Sanders won the support of 25 percent of Democratic caucusgoers in the survey, followed by former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg at 18 percent, former Vice President Joe Biden at 17 percent and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) at 15 percent.
No other candidate breaks double digits in the poll, with Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) coming the closest at 8 percent.
The poll marks a 6-point jump for Sanders from the last Times/Siena College survey in October, a boost that came largely at the expense of Warren, a fellow progressive who dropped 7 points.

This may be the most satisfying paragraph I have ever read.
Government-union membership fell again in 2019, continuing a decade-long decline. Workers in public-sector unions now number 7.066 million, representing a drop of nearly 100,000 in one year and the smallest government-organized labor membership in 20 years. Since 2009, when the ranks of government-union members peaked at 7.896 million, public-labor groups have lost more than 10 percent of their membership. The percentage of government workers belonging to unions has dropped to 33.6, the smallest proportion of the government workforce since 1978. The most recent numbers illustrate how government unions continue to suffer from the hangover of the recession of 2008-2009, in part because of a slow rebound in government employment during the economic expansion that began in 2010. The numbers may also reflect some losses that unions have suffered in the wake of the 2018 Supreme Court Janus decision, which gave public-sector workers the right to opt out of joining a union or paying fees.

If the witness vote succeeds, Hawley aims to force votes on subpoenas for House Intelligence Chairman Schiff (D-Calif.), Vice President Biden, Hunter Biden, Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson, the still-unnamed whistleblower who reported Trump’s July call with the Ukrainian president and a reported acquaintance of the whistleblower’s.
White House counsel Pat Cipollone hinted at a Schiff subpoena during testimony before the Senate on Saturday by noting he didn’t appear before the House Judiciary Committee hearing on impeachment.

Regarding the Pompeo/NPR thing, no interviewee likes to be sandbagged:
AMY GOODMAN: Well, I guess many people were quite disturbed that when you first ran for president, you went back in the midst of your campaign to Arkansas and presided over the execution of a mentally impaired man.
PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON: Yeah, but let me — let’s go back to the facts here. He was not mentally impaired when he committed the crime. He became mentally impaired because he was wounded after he murdered somebody. And the law says that it’s your mental state at the time you committed the crime. That’s something no one else ever — no one ever says that when they talk about it.
…
AMY GOODMAN: Yet, despite massive protests in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Navy continues to bomb, and you’ve — the island of Vieques. And you have authorized this. Why?
PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON: Well, now, wait a minute. Wait, wait, just a minute now.
…
AMY GOODMAN: President Clinton, U.N. figures show that up to 5,000 children a month die in Iraq because of the sanctions against Iraq.
PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON: That’s not true. That’s not true. And that’s not what they show. Let me just tell you something.
…
AMY GOODMAN: Can I say what some people —
PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON: Let me just finish.
AMY GOODMAN: Let me just say —
PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON: Let me — now, wait a minute. You started this, and every question you’ve asked has been hostile and combative. So you listen to my answer, will you do that?
AMY GOODMAN: They’ve been critical questions.
PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON: Now, you just listen to me. You ask the questions, and I’m going to answer. You have asked questions in a hostile, combative and even disrespectful tone, but I — and you have never been able to combat the facts I have given you. Now, you listen to this.

AMY GOODMAN: President Clinton on Election Day 2000. I interviewed him with WBAI producer Gonzalo Aburto. Well, a day after that program, I got a call from the White House press office. A staffer let me know how furious they were with me for breaking the ground rules for the interview. “Ground rules?” I asked. “What ground rules? He called up to be interviewed. I interviewed him.”
“He called to discuss getting out the vote,” they said, “and you strayed from the topic. You also kept him on much longer than the two to three minutes that we had agreed to,” she said.
“President Clinton is the most powerful person in the world,” I said. “He can hang up if he wants to.”
Well, the Clinton administration threatened to ban me from the White House and suggested to a Newsday reporter that they might punish me for my attitude by denying me access — not that I had any to lose. The White House spokesperson said, “Any good reporter understands if you violate the ground rules in an interview, that it’s going to be taken into account the next time you are seeking an interview.”
Well, first of all, we hadn’t agreed to any ground rules. Clinton called us. Second, we wouldn’t have agreed to any. The only ground rule for good reporting I know is that you don’t trade your principles for access. We call it the “access of evil.”
I think she was told he only had time for a fluff interview, and she sandbagged him.
There is no reason the press deserves the benefit of the doubt. Not in 2000. Certainly not in this day and age.

According to data gathered by Yelp, San Francisco had 411 restaurant closures between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31.

Hill also agreed that labor costs have been the biggest problem for him as a restaurant owner and one of the main culprits of restaurant closures citywide.
“In the old days, we would have a 30 percent labor cost, a 30 percent food cost, and a 21 percent cost on everything else that would leave us 8 to 9 percent profit,” Hill said. “Nowadays the labor portion of our expenses can be 50 percent.”

Union Leader primary endorsement: Amy Klobuchar can win
If you are an independent or Democrat, however, yours may be one of the most consequential votes ever cast in a New Hampshire Primary. If there is to be any realistic challenge to Trump in November, the Democratic nominee needs to have a proven and substantial record of accomplishment across party lines, an ability to unite rather than divide, and the strength and stamina to go toe-to-toe with the Tweeter-in-Chief.
That would be U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota. She is sharp and witty, with a commanding understanding of both history and the inner workings of Capitol Hill.
Trump doesn’t want to face her.

I know this will come as an unnerving discovery for America But it turns out that bot-farm’s entire FOX/TownHall prompted diatribe yesterday about the interview between Pompeo and Mary Louise Kelly turns out to be yet more, pure distilled bullshit:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/emails-support-npr-host-after-pompeo-calls-her-a-liar-in-setting-up-contentious-interview/2020/01/26/d793cf0e-4071-11ea-b503-2b077c436617_story.html
NPR released the emails setting up the interview. Kelly explicitly informs the Sec. of her intentions to bring up Ukraine.
““I am indeed just back from Tehran and plan to start there. Also Ukraine. And who knows what the news gods will serve up overnight. I never agree to take anything off the table.”
I think she’s lucky she wasn’t alone with him. Given Pompeo’s obvious issues with women things might have turned violent. There’s no telling how badly she might have beaten him.
As for bot-farm, well he always just beats himself, doesn’t he.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@135 Using the Oxford comma is impeachable if a Democrat does it. But nothing a corrupt Republican demagogue and liar does is. That’s where we are as a country now.
America has been through worse, as when half the country took up arms to defend slavery. But nothing says things can’t get worse after the cowering GOP senators “acquit” Trump.
Unrestrained, the Trumpublican Party wouldn’t stop with rolling back Roe v. Wade; they want to roll back the 13th Amendment, too. And they’ll ignore anything in the Constitution or laws that hinder the bully in the pulpit from persecuting liberals, gays, Muslims, people of color, and other people they don’t like.
Where is this heading? The Pinochet regime may provide clues. Chained naked political prisoners thrown out of airplanes into the Atlantic Ocean, etc.
And it’ll all be the fault of that damned Oxford comma.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@137 Nowadays I just take it for granted that anything coming from a Trumpster’s mouth is a lie. Every day, they sound more and more like Goebbels, and their master more closely resembles Goebbels’ master.
They’re apparently learning from Nixon’s mistakes. George Will, in comparing Nixon’s lies to Hitler’s lies, said Hitler’s theory of the Big Lie was that “if you tell a lie big enough, people will believe it,” whereas Nixon’s lying was “so petty and demeaning you wonder why he stooped to it.”
Trump’s and Pompeo’s lies aren’t petty and demeaning. They’re going all-in for big lies because they grasp that Republican voters are as stupid and gullible as Hitler’s supporters were.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
139,
The comparison to Goebbels fits in the sense that GOP lies are lies intended less as persuasion and more as operant conditioning. Republican voters are being trained not so much by the big lies themselves, but by the larger-than-life way in which the lies are delivered. To a sad, irrelevant flesh-bot like Teh Dumbfuck or any “diehard Trump supporter”, facts and verifiable information are far less important than the subtext carried by the lies.
The Pompeo incident provides an excellent example. The emails clearly reveal that the Sec.’s office knew that Ukraine would be brought up, along with Iran, and any other topic Kelly deemed fit. But what’s most important is to recognize that throughout this whole performative exercise over the last 72 hrs Pompeo and his staff also had those emails. They knew exactly what they agreed to. But not only did they fabricate this entire episode, they used it as an opportunity to launch a viscous and vulgar attack on a respected journalist and her employer.
So it’s important to then recognize that this was neither a gaffe nor an unintended episode. This was planned. Pompeo’s attitude is made very clear in the interview. It’s nothing new. In the past he’s stonewalled on direct questions about The Drug Deal and relied on repeating meaningless happy talk about how “proud” he is of the work “his team” has done and how he’s “supported” their work, etc. etc. But he and his staff chose this interview, this reporter, and this moment to go nuclear. Not the lie, but the way the lie is delivered (and the timing) serves multiple purposes.
First it virtue signals to Trump and the GOP base. Among Trump and his “diehard Trump supporters”, women are low status and journalists are enemies of the people. So an episode in which Sec. Pompeo is seen to lash out and harshly discipline an uncooperative female journalist is held in very high regard. Positioning themselves in direct conflict, regardless of the truth of the situation, and then redoubling the attack is seen as loyalty and as fierce defense. And it is happening at a time when Trump and his “diehard Trump supporters” are all desperately in need of defending.
It also serves a secondary and perhaps more subtle purpose. Having spent months defending himself against questions about official U.S. policy toward Ukraine in the context of The Drug Deal, Pompeo, The White House, the entire administration and the Republican Party need these kinds of questions to go the fuck away. And so however much NPR and other news orgs may now delight in exposing the big lie supporting this conflict, in the end it is the conflict that will be remembered and not the big lie. And it will be especially remembered by every career climbing, dick sucking access journalist or content producer in need of a quick quote or confirmation on background as we head into the biggest political campaign in history.
So to some extent the questions about Ukraine will go away. To a greater extent they will become more sympathetic questions with less follow up. But to the greatest extent the ground rules will be established in the feeble minds of “diehard Trump supporters” empowering every single administration official to pound the table, leap to their feet, and storm off in a cloud of vulgar threatening language rather than answer questions about how they serve the people. And in due course those same ground rules will come to apply to Republican members of the House and Senate as well.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@140 The “die-hard Trump supporters” are easy to figure out. They like the fact he’s “shaking up” Washington D.C., and doing it by breaking the rules. They can’t get what they want legitimately, so they want a thug to get it for them. Tonya Harding is their role model.

And I strongly suspect that at least the timing of this by Parnas and his atty is intended to inflict maximum damage on Senate Republicans. It should be noted that Trump certainly knew of the existence of this tape. Yet neither he nor any of his lick-spittle cronies present were kind enough to share that with Senate Republicans at any point prior to publication.
And so, as always, a bunch of Republicans are skull fucking another bunch of Republicans while we all sit back in shocked amazement wondering how people can be this stupid. But remember this: once again they are doing it to themselves. This whole escapade was of their own creation. They built Rudy’s Big Ukrainian Adventure all by themselves out of the fetid horrors of 4chan idiot conspiracies. There is no FAKE NEWS conspiracy here. No Democrat conspiracy. It’s a fundamental truism that in the world of objective reality you cannot conspire against yourself.
This field of rakes in which Senate Republicans find themselves chicken dancing is one they carefully laid out all by themselves. And so there is no justification for any of them to become frustrated or impatient with anyone asking them to explain it.

Also, keep in mind this hot-mic GOPDRUGDEAL recording is from a donor meeting a full year before Rudy’s Big Ukrainian Adventure set sail. Bondy assures CBS and everyone else that he has lots more stuff and that it only gets better (worse). And that stands to reason since what would follow would be a full year’s worth of planning and organizing for the Drug Deal.
Of course it gets worse. It’s Republicans.
It. Always. Gets. Worse.

@144 Yeah, I think the Wuhan open-air market snake vendors are manipulating it. If not them, then the North Koreans.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@146 “I don’t really see any way for Senate Republicans to walk back on this.”
I do. “We’ve got the votes, neener neener!”
But if you’re talking about the potential November consequences, that may be a different matter.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@147 Things have only begun to get worse for the GOP. According to Time magazine, fully half of millennials — the largest generation in American history — think capitalism is a failed system, only 17% identify as Republicans, and their turnout doubled in 2016 and may triple in 2020.

Republicans are so fucked …
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
150,
Ssshhh! You’re saying the quiet part out loud.
I really don’t want people like bot-farm to become aware until it’s too late that 2020 will probably be the first election in decades where Boomers (and surviving “Silent” and “Greatest”) are no longer the largest generational cohort. And as a generation of voters coming of age post Clinton they are not influenced by most of the Boomer myths about Reaganomics, taxes, military adventurism, and probably most significantly culture wars grievances.
But it should not be overlooked that a significant portion of that demographic are also non-college educated, low information voters who struggle to create context for voting decisions. And not a few of the recently elevated and now disgraced neo-Nazi, alt-Right, “Based Stickmen” celebrated by blood thirsty aggrieved GOP Boomers like bot-farm are themselves “diehard Trump supporters”.
Still, millennials are the most educated generation of Americans ever. And the close correlation between educational attainment and support for progressive political issues holds great promise for Democrats in 2020 and beyond. Key to that, however, will be for Democrats who succeed in gaining office to respect that support and not fall into time-worn habits of catering to moneyed donors, their lobbyists, and their consultants who still dominate the business eco-system surrounding our national and local politics.
WTF!? spews:
You know Bob is in complete denial, for lack of a better word. He’s completely ashamed, so ashamed he can’t even acknowledge the disaster that’s unfolding with The Hump. He goes even beyond and defends. Complete craziness.
Steve spews:
This guy talking might be telling a lie per second. Damn, he might set world record for wingnut facists! Oh my god, just look at him go! Looks like he’s ODing on speed.
The only funnier than a fascist telling lies that fast in an attempt to sell treason as patriotism is every single thing ever posted by our dumbfuck traitor.

Steve spews:
Dumbfuck Traitor, I’d much rather the loon had lynched you, than you lynching him. The world would be a better place.
Steve spews:

Steve spews:
“Over on MSNBC Brian Williams is offering a first-person account of what it’s like to be in a helicopter going down while on fire.”
Fuck you, you traitor. You should be fucking hiding, shaking with fear. Because I’m thinking it’s come time to rip your fucking head off, sticking it up your dead ass so your face still shows, taking a fucking pic with a caption that says, “I died a traitor” and keeping it as a souvenir of what I just did to you.
Since you have no clue that your life is on the line right now, and have no fucking clue as dangerous I can be, that makes you the dumbest mf on the goddamned fucking planet.
Listen to this you dumbfuck Nazi traitor, every patriotic American in the country would call me a hero if I did that to you.
You’re so fucking stupid.
