    Well, the cops didn’t have body cams, but thanks to ubiquitous cellphone cameras, there’s a “discrepancy” between what the police report says happened and what the video shows happened.

    The police chief has apologized. The mayor has promised to hold a community meeting and said, “I realize that to get to the bottom of this issue and implement meaningful change, we are going to have some uncomfortable and painful conversations.”

    Roger Rabbit Commentary: An investigation needs to determine exactly what happened in this case. But as a general proposition, cops who mistreat citizens, then lie in official reports and embellish their accusations against their victims to cover up their misconduct, should be fired — period. And should never be cops again.

    You know that isn’t what happens or what will happen in this case. Discrepancies between reports and camera recordings can not be proved to have arisen from malicious or corrupt intent. However violent, humiliating, dangerous, and unjust these arrests might have been, if they can narrowly be shown to fall within the policy guidance as perceived by the police involved at the time they can’t even be disciplined. And qualified immunity takes care of the rest.

    What other solution is there but fewer cops? Investigations don’t fix it. Cultural sensitivity training doesn’t fix it. Prosecutions don’t fix it.
    Fewer cops fixes this, where nothing else will. Every American deserves to be able to live freely and go about their daily lives free from fears about this kind of state sponsored terror. We are that state. It isn’t “somebody else”. It’s us. We chose this. If we don’t chose to fix it, and so far in the last forty years we never have, then we own the responsibility for it.

    @34 Did I say these cops will be disciplined? No, I didn’t say that. They will be protected by their union. I know very well that lying on reports is as routine for these guys as racist violence against black children is.

    I’m not sure I agree we need fewer police. For example, I wish there were more traffic cops in my neighborhood to pull over speeding drivers and rogue bicyclists.

    But it’s clear we need different police. What I’m thinking is we should start over and rebuild our police agencies from scratch.

    To what end? Even in the absence of reliable evidence, let’s assume some small measurable reduction in speeding by motorists and whatever it is offends you about bicyclists. At what cost and to what benefit? Fewer fatalities? Not likely, unless you live on an interstate or in a very rural area. Fewer injuries? Barely measurable. Fewer insurance claims for repair is about all you’ll get. At a cost per unit of $125k per year, plus admin, plus processing. Raise infraction penalties to an average of about $700 and you get to break even, maybe.

    But about half of the motorists stopped by these officers will a) have committed no actual infraction for which a stop can be legally justified; b) have little if any resources to fight the unlawful arrest/detention; c) be poor or minority persons. These cops will take active measures to escalate the unlawful stop to a full arrest on misdemeanor charges ranging from obstruction, to resisting, to disorderly, etc. They’ll use these manufactured circumstances to pretext searches in hopes of finding contraband, whether it’s a dope seed or a “folding blade knife without a lock”, gaining them further elevated charges. And your local city and perhaps county prosecutors and courts will process the carnage like the legal packing lines that they are. Your neighbors subjected to this abuse will lose their jobs, their savings, their health insurance coverage, and many will lose their homes.

    What you want them to do won’t in any way change who they are. They are cops. This is what they do. Asking for more cops is asking for more of this.
