    About a week ago, I was walking home from the gym at night. It was warm, before the big cold snap. A thin, middle aged black man stops me. He says excuse me. Right then I knew he was going to ask me for help.

    But he didn’t ask right from the start. He starts to tell me his name and very happily he tells me that earlier that day he was able to get into subsidized housing and he went on about how they are providing a lot, like laundry, and some meals. He was so great that when he then said that they aren’t providing everything and that he smells and that they don’t provide everything that he starts to well up in the eyes. I said, don’t cry so what do you need toiletries. And he says he’s crying because h’s so happy and greatful and yes he needs toiletries. I took him for his word. I take out my wallet and I have a couple ones and fives and a couple twenties. I take a twenty and give it to him. He then asked my name and thanked me.

    If I had a million I would have given him more. Money isn’t everything. Now maybe I was suckered but I didn’t care and could care less today if I found out that he was lying, but when you believe the guys word for being true, at that time money wasn’t important.
