    Here, Doctor Dumbfuck is merely regurgitating set-piece rightwing propaganda — further evidence that he can’t think for himself. Criticizing liberal arts education is a standard part of their dogma, and you see it all the time. According to them, all we need to make the world safe for conservatives is science, technology, engineering, and math, the implication being that their worldview is totally materialistic.

    (As an aside, STEM seems a little incongruous, given that Republicans clearly view science as an enemy; you’d think they would’ve dropped the “S” by now.)

    The reason for their antagonism toward liberal arts education is obvious: They won’t want our country populated with people who can think for themselves. Simply stated, they’ve noticed that thinkers don’t vote for Republicans.

    Of course, the meme that liberal arts degrees are useless is complete and utter bullshit, and easily debunked. For example, many prominent CEOs came from liberal arts backgrounds, including: Howard Schultz (Starbucks), Michael Eisner (Disney), John Mackey (Whole Foods), Frederick W. Smith (FedEx), Lloyd Blankfein (Goldman Sachs), Kenneth Frazier (Merck), and of course Steve Jobs (Apple) who attended Reed College and studied, among other things, calligraphy.

    If you do a simple internet search, it’s easy to find articles saying tech companies want to hire people with liberal arts degrees.

    But I really don’t need to defend liberal arts education. The simple truth is we’re not going to survive without it. Engineers can design and build hydrogen bombs, but it takes philosophers to keep us from using them. That’s why I want submarine commanders and Air Force bomber pilots to have liberal arts training. As long as we have doomsday buttons, I want people who can think and exercise critical judgment in charge of the buttons.

    I won’t spend a lot of time on art, theater, music, and dance. The function of art is to make us see things from new perspectives and rethink what we think we know about the world and ourselves. People who can’t do that are doomed to remain trapped in their dogmas all their lives.

    If Doctor Dumbfuck is ever fortunate enough to visit Madrid and see Picasso’s “Guernica” hanging in El Reina, and it only looks like grafitti to him, that’s sad — and also goes a lot farther than Hillary to explain how we ended up with Trump.

    A number of posts back, I called Doctor Dumbfuck a “plumber.” He’s a perfect example of a trade-school doctor, i.e. a technician who can fix things (or, in his case, identify what needs to be fixed by the GP or surgeon), but he doesn’t know how to save the world in a Cuban Missile Crisis or solve any of our pressing societal problems.

    Jerome Hines, an American opera singer, did not himself save the world during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Only two men, Kennedy and Khrushchev, had the power to do that. Hines only knew how to sing, and did so on the Bolshoi stage in Moscow on the evening when the crisis was approaching its most dangerous moment, with Khrushchev and several members of the Presidium in the audience. The next day, Khrushchev backed down. Did Hines’ presence and voice make the difference?

    And what of Vasili Arkipov, the Soviet sub fleet commander who singlehandedly prevented the launch of a nuclear torpedo at an American carrier at the intercept point? Was he a mere engineer or technician, or a man who knew how to think? An unappreciated hero in his own country, millions survived because of him.

    When I started college, I was told the purpose of a college education is to “teach you how to think.” That’s it. You’re not going to remember all the stuff you heard in lectures and read in textbooks, but that information quickly becomes obsolete anyway. College teaches you to find information, think critically, and communicate effectively.

    Critical thinking is nearly impossible if you know nothing about history, geography, biology, sociology, psychology, economics, etc. Courses in philosophy, literature, and the arts improve your “seeing” skills. This is why curriculum planners shove these courses down your throat in the form of graduation requirements. Without such a background, an engineer or doctor or other technical expert is just another kind of mechanic or plumber who can design or fix things but is incapable of making crucial judgments or decisions.

    As for batteries, it takes engineers to design them, and technicians to build them, but the decision maker who decides to save the world by hooking up solar panels to batteries probably will be a liberal arts guy.

    Speaking of the border #RAPE-CAMPS, Sec. Nielsen missed another deadline last week. Nearly a thousand innocent terrified children who were ripped sobbing from their mother’s arms by border soldiers at Sec. Nielsen’s insistence are still shivering under thin blankets on concrete floors in DHS detention despite multiple court orders.

    In a substantial number of these cases their mothers were compelled by heavily armed border soldiers to sign documents they could not read waiving their parental rights, and then subsequently locked in chains and transported back across the border without their children.
