    Sorry I did not post this in the earlier open thread, as the news broke while I was working. Tentative agreement reached, New Jersey Transit commuter rail strike averted, a tentative agreement has been reached. Apparently you can do a labor negotiation over the phone, as Governor Christie has gotten more involved over two weeks. I had assumed his reputation of being tough with unions, was why this was dragging on. Details have not been released. Also, the Rail Labor Coalition includes diverse unions as the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen(International Brotherhood of Transfers), Sheet Metal, Air Rail Transport workers-Transportation Division, and the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way employees.

    There is room for reform at New Jersey Transit. One commuter rail line, and it’s a branch line that connects the town where the Governor’s Mansion, Princeton, with Princeton Junction on the main line. It is only one or two stations, and if it were light rail, could be operated only by one man.

    Trump has brought a ton of attention to the GOP primary. Not even that long ago our own idiot trolls bragged about it. But not all attention is good, at least in this case. And the negs that Trump has accumulated on not just his own image, but also the party brand are fairly indelible. The negative numbers among women in general, and particularly among independent and even Republican women are shocking.

    Sunday is election day in three German states, Sachsen-Anhalt, Rhineland-Palentate, and Baden-Wurtemberg, and they are seen as a referendum on Chancellor Angela Merkel.

    The most interesting one is Baden-Wuertemberg, longtime Christian Democratic/Free Democratic stronghold, that had a political earthquake 5 years ago. Being on the edge of the Black Forest, it seemed like a place that Alliance 990/The Greens could gain a foothold. In 2011, they got enough votes to form government, in a coalition that had the Social Democrats as junior partner. Fukishima helped, prior to that, Merkel ‘s Free Democratic allies were pushing to scrap the phase-out of Nuclear Power. Baden Wurtemberg is home to the cities of Karlsruhe and Freiberg. The former is Germany’s judicial capitol, and home to a very interesting transit system where in some cases light rail trains share some stretches of main line railway track, and the latter is home to some innovative land use patterns, especially it’s suburb of Vauban.

    The Greens in this particular state, per the article I shared, is a very contradictory party, hard to pigeon hole into the American paradigm. Some American pundits would go after the crowd that supports them by criticizing environmentalists that drive Porshe’s and Mercedes-Benz.

    The election will be using a variation of the German Mixed Member Proportional Representation system. In Baden Wurtemberg, the party slate seats don’t use a list, but the proportional seats go to the best near winner.

    I’d deal with it if it should happen. Shit happens. Better than having a 45 pointed at me. Having to walk up a to the gate of a communications site up to where the replacements for the Italian Mountain troops some of the best in the Italian military have been replaced by 2 year draftees.     @13 Could be fun to watch. Though there actually are some strategies in the thing that might actually be used by attorneys. Someone is revealing their secrets.

    Of course you can represent yourself in court. And more people should do it. Too many defendants cop a plea or get talked into a plea or plead guilty. Of course the vast majority of cases never make it to trial.

    Now if you are guilty of speeding, and it becomes clear the prosecutor has the goods on you, it’s still a good idea to be willing to go to court if you aren’t getting a good deal from the Prosecutor…you may be able to get a reduced fine from the judge.

    Still there is a reason why attorney’s are advised not to be their own attorney. It’s probably a good idea to at least consult an attorney about your case than going by this entertaining clap trap.

    @16 Once the judge determines this guy is fit for trial and not nuts then Wisconsin can get down to business and have the trial and if he’s found guilty he can spend the rest of his life in prison at much less cost to the taxpayer. He will go to his new very small uncomfortable rabbit hole in prison and he will stay there. He will get a few opporunties to appeal, but it will not be the endless number that means it will be 10 or 16 years before the death penalty might be carried out with much much fan fare, protests, last minute appeals. Then again the guy is white so he would probably get life or a long sentence anyways. Though there is a greater chance his lawyers may convice the court he is not fit for trial and never will be.
    For all the cost of the few death penalty trials we do in Washington and the likely hood that the virtual moratoriam here in Washington state will continue at least as long as we have a Democrat as governor perhaps we should adopt Wisconsin stance and get rid of the death penalty.

    @25 Well American pundits don’t get that European politics are a lot more about class and they are open about it.

    They also don’t seem to get that in Germany driving is privilege. Not everyone gets to drive (many don’t want to drive), and most except those who drive as part of their job, are financially well off. The cost of getting a drivers license is pricey, and insurance is expensive, and so is gas, and you can’t drive a rust bucket so why not drive a nice BMW? You can’t hide your class from your German neighbors. The neighbors who will insist you sweep your part of the street.

    @33 Well Bernie’s answer was clunky, but he answered the question that was asked. He ain’t perfect and I think his answer shows he knows that. Some of Bill Clintons policies have not worked out well for the black community due in large part to unintended consequences, though critics tried to clue Bill in. Bernie is certainly saying something different from any of the Republican candidates all of whom race relations policies are of a much lower priority than them helping the rich and powerful.

    @34 We are all responsible for the Libyan chaos. Some of that chaos is because the former leader nationalized the oil fields of Libya, and the international oil companies really really wanted back in and used as much influence as they could in Europe and here in the states. They aren’t getting a whole lot out of that influence, but with a global glut of oil they have stopped using their influence for Europe and the United States to do more or for Egypt to invade. The question really should be why the Egyptians have not done so as real politic says they should have or will.
    The only alternative would have been Kaddaffi remaining in power. The strong man kept Libya together and now tribalism is alive and well. It’s possible a nation for, by and of the people could arise from the ashes, but I’m not holding my breath. For some reason Tunisia is having a better run on becoming an democratic state.

    The results of those three elections are not good for the CDU, and the Social Democrats. The SPD did hold Rhineland-Palantate, and the Greens expanded their vote in Baden- Wuertenberg, but might need a new coalition partner, and that particular brand, could get support from the CDU. I believe that the Greens are the junior partner in coalition with the CDU in Hesse.

    The AfD has rode anti-foreigner sentiment to huge gains in all three states.
