2)With Lake Superior’ s Depth, it would have to be a floating wall. I thought warships at first, but I believe a post-War of 1812 treaty outlaws those on the Great Lakes. I think the Rush-Bagot Agreement has stood the test of time, although there is the law enforcement loophole that allowed the Coast Guard to use light machine guns post-9/11.

One local example is Pt.Roberts, the peninsula that dips below 49 Degrees, but Boundary Bay going North of 49, cuts it off from the rest of Washington State. One quirk of that is Whatcom County Sheriff’s deputies have to leave their guns at the border, and pick another one up when they re-enter the United States. Not sure if that applies if they go by boat.

Roger Rabbit spews:
Barrons is a weekly magazine that reports on financial markets, and has a politically conservative editorial slant. In this week’s edition, their chief editorial writer takes on Bickle’s favorite subject: Automation displacing wage earners. He foresees a time when robots will replace humans, just as machines replaced horses a century ago. But such an economy would also be vastly more efficient, productive, and richer. What to do with the idled human population? His solution: A “birthright income” supported by taxing the robots’ increased output. People could do whatever they want with their time: Travel, paint, write, read poetry, make love, etc.
This, of course, implies the end — or at least a substantial modification of — traditional ownership-based capitalism. Indeed, it smacks heavily of socialism, which is surprising coming from the pen of an ideological conservative whose editorials are about as free-market and libertarian as they come. What he’s suggesting is the mother of all entitlements, a universal kind of social security that starts paying benefits at birth, and is the individual’s major (or only) source of income throughout his/her lifetime, supported by taxes on the owners of capital.
Why would a diehard conservative embrace such an idea? Probably because he couldn’t imagine any workable alternative.
It’s not only feasible, but probable, that human ingenuity eventually will produce inventions that will put humans out of work. Computers can fly planes better than any person can, and robots can perform surgery more quickly and accurately than any human doctor can. We can’t even assume that human workers will be needed to design, build, and maintain the robots; there’s no reason why robots can’t do those jobs, too, better than people.
So what would a world in which machines and robots perform all the productive work look like under a purely capitalist model? First, you’d have a hugely efficient and productive economy. Second, the owners of that capital would lay claim to the economy’s entire output — and they likely would be unimaginably (to us) wealthy. (Billionaires would be superseded by trillionaires.) Third, in an economy with no productive employment for humans, the vast majority of people — at least 90% — would have no means of self-support, unless ownership of capital were much more widely dispersed than it is today. (But the natural tendency of capitalism is to concentrate wealth, not disperse it, without some sort of government intervention.)
How would those people support themselves? Revert to subsistence farming? It’s hard to see how that would work in an age when most people live in cities and giant corporations own most of the farmland (farmed by robotic tractors and harvesters). Even if that were possible, it would result in a peasant society likely ruled by a tiny upper class. (If the capitalists couldn’t maintain their rule over the masses in such a society, the capitalist system wouldn’t survive, because the masses would revolt against such a lopsided distribution of income and wealth.)
Barron’s editorial writer sees this, and realizes that socialist redistribution of robot-created wealth is the only alternative to revolution and overthrow of capitalism altogether. It is not capitalism itself, but technology, that will destroy capitalism and bring about socialism.
Be careful what you wish for, Bickle. Every time another fast food worker is replaced by a kiosk or hamburger-flipping robot, Karl Marx chuckles again in his grave.
