    The fight over that damned old Confederate Battle Flag misses a major point. For many many years there was this thin called Reconstruction. It is likely Abraham Lincoln would have been far more magnanimous, Congress Willing. It’s sometimes good to let your enemies have a little to let off steam.     One of the worst things the English ever done in the century old fight in Ireland was the banning of the green. It just made the Irish cause bigger and led to the death of many a lad…on both sides but mainly Irish.
    While you may think it’s time for that flag to go into a museum don’t be too hasty and make it a more powerful symbol. As some good old boys right up in the Skagit Valley proudly think the south shall rise again. I’m not so sure the Knights of the Golden Circle are a defunct and dead institution.

    In other news, Mike Huckabee remains mentally ill, and seems to be getting worse.

    I think I’ve begun to put my finger on the problem. That is, it is a matter of people spending an inordinate amount of their time, literally forcing their minds into a specific mold. For the lower intelligence levels this isn’t terribly difficult, methinks.

    It isn’t unlike a person practicing something, which requires huge amounts of dedication and devotion to the art. Whether it is music, or cooking or painting, it is all quite similar. I’ve known musicians who were quite brilliant, but often not terribly smart in other areas. The same goes for things like precision surgery or Law. Now, in the case of people like Mike Huckabee or say, Pat Robertson or maybe Ken Hamm, they spend that time on their entire psychological framework being built around a “belief”. There is no evidence necessary to support the notions, no factually sound logical construct to it. It’s just “belief” and “faith”.

    My Mom was a psychologist for more than 30 years. I ate lunch with her often, went to the clinic where she worked and such. I know what schizophrenics are like. I know what the Bipolars and the obsessive-compulsives, the pathological liars and borderline personalities are like. Most of the problem for the latter was that they were raised in fundamentalist Christian households and have no logic system or ethical structure that comes out of personal experience with life. The experiences they do have, are wrapped up in that religious belief system and teach them nothing at all if they come into conflict with the predisposed notions that are in the Christian Bible, the Talmud or the Q’ran or any other Book. I mean, how is the idea of Karma anything other than another way of shifting blame to the victim?

    I have yet to see any indication whatsoever, that any of the major names in the Republican/Conservative camp are in possession of the basic intelligence and psychological construct necessary to perform the duties of the office. They “believe” things, but have never understood how actually “knowing” isn’t the same thing.

    Dick Cheney is a prime example. The big cheeses in charge of the Party wanted to run him for President. He, being one of those Big Cheeses, was in a position to make that decision for himself, and instead chose to be Vice-President. He could run the whole operation from that office, as long as he had a stooge in front of him to take the blame for all the shit he pulls.

    The natural choice was George Walker Bush. He was specifically chosen because he was a total sycophant, nearly completely uneducated in anything but how to move money around, and psychologically very weak. He was a die-hard alcoholic who could be convinced of practically anything as long as it was delivered within the context of his christian faith.

    They spent decades grooming him for the office. He wasn’t intelligent enough to question why people thought he was capable of carrying out the duties of the office. He was just happy I think, that people were paying attention to him and promising to put him in the highest office in the land if he just played along. His entire purpose during his tenure as Governor of Texas, and then President, was to stand in front of the cameras and smile a lot while the Cheney cabal sabotaged as much shit as possible without getting caught.

    In this effort, Cheney was one of the primary architects, as were Bill Kristol and others like Donald Rumsfeld. They went into the business of politics specifically to vandalize the system as much as possible. George went along. He was immeasurably wealthy already, knew that he would never be prosecuted for anything he ever did in his life, (his brief tenure as a fighter pilot trainee demonstrated that) and he was the biggest kiss-ass in modern Human history. Even his superior officers in the TNG filed that as a part of their official reports about the man.

    After 9/11, instead of responding to that emergency as rational people, they chose to strike at a nation that flat-out could not defend itself. They knew exactly who did the WTC attack, and instead of taking the route of rational reaction, they chose “faith” as their primary motivation. I cannot say if this was a completely cynical fairytale meant to blow smoke up our asses, but it is certain that there were people making decisions that affected parts of our society in extremely negative fashion and had no effect, nor any purpose in support of that reaction.

    Examples being, being strip-searched at airports, DEA and TSA agents literally robbing people at gunpoint on trains, massive increases in long-term incarceration for petty criminals and that being coupled with the privatization of the penitentiary system. At the same time, rules were changed to put whole demographics effectively under martial law. But somehow, we’re supposed to take their motivations for these things on faith.

    So what is the purpose of that? Why just deliberately wreck a system that way? To make money? To deliver the Republic to the criminal class with all the bells and whistles that go along with that?

    Frank Herbert, one of my favorite writers wrote:
    “All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible. Such people have a tendency to become drunk on violence, a condition to which they are quickly addicted.”

    So it is not only a matter of absolute Power corrupting absolutely, it most certainly does, but the real danger of Power is that it is attractive to the the people who see it as a personal threat unless they control it, and so it attracts people who desire Power specifically to use it for selfish purposes.

    He also said, “Religion is the emulation of the adult by the child.” which really struck me when I first read Dune. Adult humans who still need a Daddy to threaten them with punishment for disobedience have never really grown up. In this, there is still a higher Power that needs to be obeyed.

    But y’know, there isn’t any recent information on what that means. There really is no ongoing communication that has any credible source. Are we really supposed to take the oral legends, passed on for 200 generations of illiterate goat herders and desert pirates as still being credible information? Especially when taken in the context of two thousaned years of nearly continuous warfare over the definitions of the text?

    If you Conservative Christian Clowns want to be taken seriously, you better start backing up your bullshit. Because that whole “faith” thing is wearing thin, especially when people really start to notice that what you seem to be professing to people out loud doesn’t seem to coincide with your actions or your real motivations.

    @4 Jindal, Huckabee, and many of the other rightwingers throwing tantrums over the Court’s gay marriage ruling aren’t necessarily stupid people. Some of them are quite bright. Jindal, for example, was a Rhodes Scholar. The more unscrupulous among them are opportunistic politicians playing to a specific audience. Huckabee, a Baptist preacher, undoubtedly has sincerely-held religion-driven beliefs that were a lifetime in the making and won’t change overnight. This isn’t the first time in history that a Supreme Court decision has provoked cries of outrage and vows of resistance. The Court’s school desegregation decision ultimately had to be enforced with troops.

    Sometimes you just can’t reconcile people’s conflicting views on social issues. A few generations back there were people who just weren’t going to give up slavery without a bloody civil war. For a hundred years afterward the losers of that war continued to terrorize and murder blacks. The vestiges of that social conflict continue to echo in our own time in the form of lingering racism.

    The American concept of freedom clearly is not a fixed and static set of social rules, but an evolving thought process. It’s hard to imagine now how the Founding Fathers could envision a free society yet allow slavery at the same time. The answer is it was a compromise necessary to unite the 13 colonies under a single flag, and that union split apart when slavery came under serious challenge.

    Two of our biggest social conflicts today are abortion and gay rights. Both disputes pit religionists with longstanding moral cods they want to enforce on the whole of society against more secular-minded people who simply want to be left alone. The religionists want to interfere with a woman who seeks an abortion in order to control her own destiny; and they feel interfered with if they can’t discriminate against gays in their private schools, colleges, and businesses.

    At the heart of these conflicts is the issue of governmental action. You cannot stop a stranger from having an abortion except by governmental action. Public school prayer and Ten Commandments monuments in public spaces are demands to enlist government to proselytize your religion. The problem with this is that government belongs to all of us, not just to a few self-appointed factions, and even if those factions represent a majority of the people (which they often don’t), protecting individuals and minorities from being bullied by the majority is, and always has been, a fundamental precept of the American concept of freedom.

    We lawyers have worked out many of these things over the past two centuries, and feel confident of the precedents we’ve created which we draw on to resolve these disputes when they come to our courts. Thus, some of the answers seem obvious to me. Pastor Huckabee should not be required to perform gay weddings. He should be allowed to rant against gays, gay rights, gay marriage, and the Supreme Court to his heart’s content. A county clerk who objects to issuing a marriage license to a gay couple because she believes doing so conflicts with her personal religious beliefs should not be required to serve as a county clerk, but nor does she have a right to be a county clerk, and whenever she acts in an official capacity her actions must conform to the law, not her personal beliefs, if there’s a conflict between the two. And if she is unwilling to do that, she should be removed from that office. The reason is our government belongs to no individual, it belongs to all of us, and no individual or group has any right to usurp its power and functions for their own personal agenda.

    At its most fundamental level, that’s what the American concept of freedom is really about, and we should all fight to defend and protect Mike Huckabee’s rights to hold and express his personal beliefs, and at the same time we also should all fight to prevent him from using government to impose those beliefs on the rest of us.

    One in particular that I know, of course a Republican, who use to only go to Talladega for a NASCAR Race, mostly because they fly the Confederate Flag in Alabama. Of course, this individual has made many disparaging remarks towards black people, but the coward that he is, only would talk that way behind their back. He wouldn’t go to any other venue but Talladega.

    Dale has a lot of courage coming out against the flag….he’s going to piss off a lot of fans. I think most his fans will be impartial to his view, but a lot of them will not like it.

    What is the world coming to when you are a bigot and some of your biggest Idols turn the better check. Do you turn your back on all your Idols? Do you dump your friends just as easy? Who will be left in your life?

    @3 The Swastika is used frequently in American media. Openly in Germany and Russia it is a forbidden symbol and cannot be used even to mock the 3rd Reich. It can’t be used historically. No German film maker could make a Raiders of the Lost Arc or the relatively accurate Nazi parade in the Last Crusade. Making the symbol the forbidden fruit and giving it more power. And originally it’s a Hindii religious symbol, certainly a group the Nazi’s would have persecuted.

    @5 I’m mostly in agreement here, but you make a statement that the civil war was started because there was a direct threat to end slavery. That was not the case. Abraham Lincoln and the Republicans while they fund the institution repugnant were not planning on ending the institution, just limiting it to where it already existed. Southerners with an eye on Cuba or Mexico didn’t like this limitation, but it was their insistence and creation of a lie that Lincoln was going to end slavery that got the ball rolling. There were political and economic factors involved, often rooted in the fact of slavery, but not always, and it’s not the sole reason for the civil war after all the country had had slavery since it’s inception and the institution continued if only because of folks not having their property seized which was really the tough nut no one could get through.
    And last I checked it’s not just you lawyers getting our Republic to live up to our values it’s we the people. The courts have not always been the peoples champion or the individuals champion. Sometimes the courts fall short or even often.
