Sometimes an internal probe does concur with what others have found. I remember that BC Ferries did an internal probe into the sinking of the Queen of the North, and it put the blame squarely on the crew. So did the Crown Prosecutor, and the judge and jury. They missed a turn, the boat went down after hitting a rock, and two people died.
Looks like the State of Indiana is going to fund a study into expanding the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District’s electrified commuter train. Some are saying it will help Indiana residents to get to higher paying jobs in Chicago, while others are saying it will make Northern Indiana more competitive, combined with lower taxes.

NIMBY’ s once again trying to disrupt the LACMTA Purple Line. The methane issue was a legitimate concern that led to this part of the Los Angeles Subway being a stub line for the last 20 years. Now it’s noise complaints from the construction that is beginning to resume, as Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews begin utility relocations. Retiring Rep. Waxman recently lifted his ban on Federal funding for the line, and supported it in Congress.

there are several petroleum experts who are now saying that a major pricing shock in the industry due to huge losses in the shale market. I’ve been telling folks what little I know about the system and the market structure that enables Americans to enjoy relatively inexpensive fuels for their personal and business vehicles.
Back around the time 9/11 happened, I was telling folks that they’d see $5.00/gallon gasoline within about three years, and they all laughed at me. I wasn’t totally right, but when Bill Clinton left office, I could get a gallon for $1.75 or so. Thus, with this information now being published in the general media, I would probably be safely able to bet that it’ll be $8-$10/gallon within three years.
I hope to hell that I’m wrong about that. We just don’t have a really viable alternative to driving a personal vehicle everywhere. Hell, Norway has the most expensive gasoline in the world, something like $10/gallon.
We just can’t keep dumping our national wealth into that system anymore. It is bankrupting us, and preventing us from moving away from a rather primitive industrial system and into the modern age. Japan and Dubai and most of Western Europe has been aware of this issue for decades and have been making real, national efforts into moving away from relying on the internal combustion engine for personal travel. Hell, Japan has had high-speed rail for almost 50 years now. Their reliance on nuclear-steam power to support that system bit them in the ass pretty hard when the loss of the Fukushima facility put a serious dent in their ability to remain mostly self-reliant in terms of energy.
Our own reliance on inexpensive motor fuels is going to totally fuck us over. We may never really recover from this pricing shock.
Rumsfeld was never Secretary of State. He was Defense Secretary, and according to Wikipedia, the Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity under Nixon. He was probably the worst Defense Secretary if you only count it back through ’47 (although you could probably make a case for McNamara or Weinberger, and while Cheney did fine during the first Iraq war, his being SecDef set him up to be a horrible VP). But if you go back to Secretaries of War, probably the worst goes to Floyd and for future awfulness Davis.

On May 18, Swiss Voters will be deciding on a referendum over a deal for the Swiss Air Force to buy Swedish fighter jets. Now their are concerns about the plane’s communication system, being built by an American corporation. The concern is, that it may have a backdoor that could allow US intelligence agencies to see data gathered during reconnaissance flights. For a neutral air force with office hours, it should not be a problem. Still, the leader of the Christian Democrats, which supports the deal, asked the member of the Federal Council who handles the Defense Ministry to address the concerns.
