I wonder, if it is true that it was politically motivated closing a couple lanes of the George Washington Bridge and get away with it? The Bridge is the Port Authority’s moneymaker, although Governor Christie gets to pick a few board members.
Houston opens it’s second light rail line today. They are still way behind Dallas.

From 2,
I really liked the rail system in Germany. You could set your watch on how well they kept to the schedule!
So, as the Holy Babble of Jayzuz(praisethelordcannageddaAMENthankyahJAYZUZ)just isn’t conservative enough for the Prosperity Gospel Pharisees that have come to dominate the American religious culture. I suppose that they should also rewrite the Federalist Papers and Mein Kampf at the same time, to reflect a more modern interpretation of our christian value system.
After all, it wasn’t actually Hitler that killed the Jews and Gypsies, but overzealous staffers and poorly worded and interpreted military orders sent through a highly stressed chain of command through a hastily designed communications network. It was all really just an honest mistake.
Amirite TeaNazis?
Fucking bookburners.
Ten Years After etc.,
Yeah, I found Germany’s system pretty dang good, too.
There is an election underway at the only Class 1 railroad whose dispatcers are not in a union. The railroad is Union Pacific. Under the compromise to keep the National Mediation Board ruling that eliminated counting eligible craft members who did not vote at all as no votes, the number of authorization cards was increased to 50%. The Railway Labor Act elections are mail-in elections, so the voting does not end until January 15th.

Americans should blame themselves for the economy, because you humans are all a bunch of financial illiterates. Nobody held a gun to your head and forced you to buy those McMansions or load up on debt. That’s your fault.
Leave it to a Republican to compare a racist homophobe with Rosa Parks.

@1 The closure was ordered by an aide of Gov. Christie who has since resigned, and appears to have been retaliation against a local mayor who refused to endorse Christie; the state facilities direction called the no-notice four-day closure “unprecedented.”
Re that video clip on blame for the economy: It does an apples-to-oranges comparison. 50% of Americans blame Bush for causing the economic crisis, whereas 42% approve of Obama’s handling of the economy. Those are two different things. I’m sure there are people who blame the crisis on Obama — generally speaking, the same people who think he was born in Kenya and don’t remember that Bush started the bank bailouts or that Bernanke (if they know who he is) was appointed head of the Federal Reserve by Bush.
It’s hard for the average person to understand the economy because of competing economic ideologues and partisan finger-pointing. The salient point is that if the government had followed conservative policies we’d be in another Great Depression now. It’s very important that voters understand what will happen if they vote for nuclear button-pushers.
3)They do a good job integrating the services, bus, light rail, stadtbahn, S-Bahn, U-Bahn(Subway), and Intercity rail. Some of the more interesting ones, Karlsruhe and Freiberg are in the usually conservative state of Baden-Wurttenberg, although I have seen that in other countries, our political labels don’t apply. The current government in Baden-Wurttenberg, since 2011, is a coalition of Greens and Social Democrats, with a Green premier.
Looks like there will be a vote on Boeing’s counter offer on January 3rd. The National leadership of the IAM has forced the vote.

You been following how the tunnel is not progressing? Big Rocks, Flooding water. Who could have every predicted that something could go wrong?
@ 14
Everyone but the lobbyists for the contractor. I supported the cut and cover option, as it would have included several downtown exit and access ramps as well as massive remodeling of the seawall and that would have been part of the same structure.
Now, we have THE most expensive option, there is no downtown access, it is now looking to be at least a year behind schedule and the modern seawall has to be built separately. I predicted the total cost would end up being three times what people were being told, and it’s looking like I was right about that.
As usual, the people got scammed by the engineering firms rosy projections and sales pitch. It’s happened in every city in the Nation.
Apparently some of the right-wingers over at (un)SP don’t like Pudge any more than I do.
“he is mostly a self-inflicted wound”
“Pudges thread on nepotism is without any doubt the single most puerile inane thread ever”
“As always Pudge has no point and offers only endless useless obtuse argumentative bullcrap.”
“Nice job Pudge, you get the most mindless tedious blogster of the century award.”
“The amusing part is that pudge thinks he’s clever.”
Let’s not leave Jim Miller out.
“miller who stays locked in his office muttering to himself”
And their newest blogger, Adam Faber, McKenna’s former whatever-he-was, probably wasn’t expecting this coming from the right,
“Go to hell, Adam!”
“So yeah, it’s not that I oon’t hate Obama and Inslee, bur I hate you so so much more.”
My goodness gracious! And for one day at least, look what I’m getting,
“Merry Christmas to you and your family.”
“Thanks so much for the compliment.”
“thanks for your comments”
“Regards”
The world has indeed gone mad.
Will it be 3 days after Christmas when 1.3 million Americans will be losing unemployment support?
Thanks to the tea party Republicans.
I wish those folks scrambling and scraping to get by will fondly remember the tea party come election time 2014.
In Germany, the State of Hesse held an election the same day as the recent Federal election. The results were a little different. The Christian Democrats and the Greens will form the next state government. Before the Federal Grand Coalition agreement, there was talk of the Greens being Merkel’s junior partner.

No food? Thank a republican.
Homeless? Thank a republican.
Ability to vote take away? Thank a republican.
Individual liberties taken away? Thank the Democrats and Republicans.
@16 Their intolerance of any deviation from their own version of right-think extends to their own kind. Really, I think wingnuttia is a personality disorder, not a political ideology.
Colorado School Shooting Victim Dies
Claire Davis, the 17-year-old girl shot injured in the Arapahoe High School shooting, died this afternoon. She had been in a coma since being shot in the head at point-blank range with a shotgun. Her killer won’t be prosecuted because he blew himself away a minute later.
@22. Well Thank God the our 2nd amendment rights to guns is untainted by regulations. That would be much worse than keeping guns out of the hands of the crazies.
@23 Yes, no price is too high to pay for your gun FREEDOMZ!
At least not if it’s someone else’s child who is killed by a random act of gun violence.
This senseless death occurred in a state that just recalled two state legislators because they voted in favor of a background check bill.
I really think there’s something to be said for secession — i.e., let those people have their own damn country and shoot each other
all they want to.
In other news, a SeaTac hotel manager who stridently opposed the $15 minimum wage initiative before the election, saying he’d have to lay off workers and that would “hurt” him, has broken ground on a $16 million expansion that will add 63 rooms and 25 jobs now that the election is over and Prop. 1 passed.

Roger Rabbit Commentary: You could see the scales on those crocodile tears even as he was shedding them.
@26. He just wanted to maximize profits. That’s capitalism, baby.
3)By the way, Houston uses a mix of light rail vehicles from Siemens of Germany(made in California), and CAF of Spain(assembled in Elmira, New York).
Looks like the private financed streetcar project in Detroit is getting closer to construction. Some utility work is underway.

Like it needs being said again….though perhaps it does…laws to restrict access to voting are overwhelmingly motivated by racial and partisan animus – one side trying to disenfranchise those who would vote against them.
Science says so.
Make no mistake, the modern Republican party is a fascist authoritarian criminal enterprise dedicated to turning the USA into a plutocracy.
First they took away the voting rights of poor African Americans….and no one complained….
Just finished grocery shopping for Christmas dinner at Safeway. Again I earned some gas discount. Only 20 cents per gallon this time. (I had earned 30 cents per gallon after Thanksgiving shopping).
Filled up the tank for $3.03 per gallon.. Darn! If only I had 10 more cents discount.
I thought the tea party said we’d be paying $5.00 and more per gallon due to the policies of President Obama.
There can be no doubt we will pay much higher prices for gasoline in the future, in the near future even, but it will be because of oil reserve depletion not the economic policies of the current administration.
@31 I remember when $10 filled up a tank.
@31 “but it will be because of oil reserve depletion”
Most of the world’s original oil is still in the ground if you include tight oil, tar sands, deep sea oil, etc. The amount of oil that can be extracted at a cost of $80/bbl or less is enormous. If people are willing to pay $3/gal for gas, we’ll run out of atmosphere before we run out of oil.
Mikhail Kalashnikov, 94, inventor of the AK-47 rifle, has died.
The AK-47 has near-mythical status. But the ancient Lee-Enfield .303 bolt-action can shoot much farther and with better accuracy, and in the hands of Muslim jihadists that advantage turned a lot of Russian kids into dead meat in Afghanistan.
