Booker’s opponent actually wondered why anybody would want the job of US Senator. Apparently he did, because he had just run for it.

Oldest commuter rail service on the West Coast, San Francisco CalTrain, turns 150.

It has gone from Southern Pacific to be a joint operation of transportation authorities in Santa Clara, San Mateo, and San Francisco counties. It has gone from steam, to Diesel, and now electrification is around the corner.

I used to ride that a lot – between Palo Alto and San Francisco. Great service, charming old stations, avoiding the nightmare of 101 at rush hour.

I love commuter rail – in college I used to take the Purple Line in Boston from North Station (right next to the Gah-den) out to Concord, where my girlfriend’s family lived. The conductors would come through and announce the stops in the thickest Boston accent you’ve ever heard, and I had the sequence out to Concord memorized for the longest time…
Or when visiting friends in the NYC area, we’d take the train from some station in the burbs into Grand Central or Penn station. It worked great.
Robust infrastructure is a great thing.

Ya’know, if the Cootch tried to run on this bullshit here in the great State of Washington, he’d have been laughed over the Rocky Mountains. Even by eastern Washington standards he’s a dominionist creep.
I know a couple folks who live in the middle of the old clearcut country north of Colville. Pretty hard-core rednecks, loggers for the most part. They sit in the middle of the near desert of old stumps their fathers and grandfathers made, and whine about Barack sending their jobs to the Chinese.

3)It’s ridership should see another bump, BART is on strike, again. At least it helps out Milbrae to the Embarcadero area. MUNI saw a 10% increase during the July strike, 10% ridership on top of a daily ridership of 700,000.

4)One of the biggest builders of Diesel-Electric commuter locomotives, is based in Boise. Motive Power Wabtec is going to be seeing tougher competition, from Brookeville Locomotive in Pennsylvania, and D has jumped back in, although Wabtec os diversifying suppliers, with GE and Cummins being tapped. What GO Transit in Toronto is doing, is worth watching, replacing the EMD 710 prime mover, which produces 4000hp, with two Cummins QSK60 engines which produce 2700hp each. The plan is, to switch off one, on shorter trains. Sound Transit could use that capability on some runs.

Sean Hannity has been caught lying about Obamacare on teevee by a real journalist who knows how to fact-check.
