    One alternative to increase minority participation in politics that has not been tried much, is proportional representation. A form of it is used in Cambridge, Mass, to elect the city council. Unfortunately, it was the only city doing it at the time the VRA was passed. Over a dozen had tried it in the thirties and fourties, but racism and the Red Scare were used to get it repealed.

    I’ve often thought that a form of that could be effective in nullifying the effects of gerrymandering.

    Besides money, I think the most toxic aspect of US voting is the combination of gerrymandering to limit the voices of your opponents by concentrating them in a single district (a form of ghettoizing, really), and the barriers to voting put up (overwhelmingly) by Republicans against people of poverty/color.

    The former could be solved by proportional voting – and then we’d see US House delegations in places like Ohio and Pennsylvania resemble what the voters voted for.

    Unfortunately, the same assholes drawing the gerrymandered district lines would be the ones to put in place proportional voting.

    In Canada, the Senate is not elected, but appointed by the Governor General on advice froma the PM. Prime Minister Harper eants to make it elecyed, and get the term down to about 8 years. The NDP opposes the Senate and leans toward abolition. The Saskatchewan Party, which governs the province of the same name is for electing the body, but their leader, is now leaning towards abolition. Saskatchewan Party is a center-right party.

By the way, the Premier of the state which includes Sydney, is a Liberal, which in Australia, is a Conservative.     My solution would be easy. All employess or officers are taxed at 90% on anything over 20x of their least paid temp, worker or outsourced subsidiary. If the least make $10 an hour, that pencils to approx 20k a year, then anything over 400k is taxes at 90%.

The locomotives, MP40C’s from Motive Power, in Boise, use EMD 710 series prime movers. EMD is now owned by Caterpillar.

    Caterpillar has decided to have EMD re-enter the passenger market, and the first new model, the F125 Spirit, uses a newer engine. Could they be supplying Motive Power with a bad product? If so, MPI has other options now. It could be other components causing issues, though. I have not found any news on the locomotive issue, so it may be for service expansion, but the existing locomotives have been having mechanical issues lately.
