Friday Morning Open Thread!

by Carl Ballard — Friday, 7/2/21, 7:58 am

Good morning to everyone except for the 64,115 people who signed the Compassionate Seattle initiative. I understand the impulse. The City and County have been dithering for far too long. And it does provide much needed housing (although not enough, more than now).

But that ban on encampments is just too much. There won’t be enough housing, and so it will be cruel. Now is cruel, but this would make that permanent.

Anyway, please get vaccinated if you haven’t yet.

I see someone needs to step out of his Ballard apartment entrance, slip on some freshly deposited human feces left on the sidewalk, and land on an uncapped heroin syringe needle.

At which time I will express the requisite compassion for his unfortunate situation.

It’s nice to see government-owned media giving an honest appraisal of the disaster that is the Biden-Harris border.

An investigation by the BBC has found more than 2,000 migrant children being detained in a camp in El Paso, Texas, in appalling conditions.

The centre at Fort Bliss is overcrowded and ridden with disease, with shortages of clean clothes and medical care for the children.

Staff working there say that illnesses such as covid and flu have affected hundreds of children in recent months.

It’s unfortunate that it’s a government-owned media in another country.

“Groups behind the proposal include the Downtown Seattle Association, United Way of King County, Chief Seattle Club and several non-profits that work on homeless housing issues.”

And nowhere does the story say any of these groups or their members are willing to pay a single dime in taxes for more housing or closing down encampments.

Moving people from tents and tarp shelters into apartments is expensive, if you have to build or acquire the apartments. Walls and roofs with plumbing require a bit more capital than nylon or plastic without plumbing.

So who pays for this? I could be wrong, but I’ll go out on a limb and venture a wild guess that the proponents of this proposal aren’t volunteering to pick up the bill. They’re more likely free riders.

Compassion has turned Seattle into a hell-hole. The homeless problem is out of control. To see the encampments fill the public spaces is a shame and disgrace to a once beautiful city. One thing I don’t understand is why the homeless generate so much garbage

I hear there is wide open spaces on Whidbey Island, hell, one of the cities started as a commune. Bus/ferry fare to Whidbey would be a cheap solution. Bob could give lots of compassion so they would feel better about the move.

GE shares, while still more than $10 cheaper than when Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit recommended them to Newt, are now bouncing sideways in a narrow trading range of $11ish to $14ish. At this point the bottom is unlikely to drop out of the stock.

Selling naked puts against the shares is an easy way to profit without watching your family suffer through actual ownership of the shares, the way Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit’s family has suffered.

It’s not something Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit understands, and as a retiree on a pitifully limited income it’s not something he can participate in, either, as he can’t afford to pay for the shares in the event that they are put to him.

I’d never do this in a market that has climbed this far; I think a 10% downward move is more likely than a 10% upward move, over the short term.

But put-selling is an efficient way to ensure that you’ll always have enough money to buy your own copy of Barron’s.

Neither Hunter Biden nor Joe Biden has EVER denied that the laptop was Hunter’s. Fortunately, it’s not Hunter’s now.

Joe Biden entertained Mexican billionaires Carlos Slim and Miguel Alemán Velasco – his son Hunter’s business associates – in the vice president’s office in 2014

While Joe was Vice President, he also flew Hunter and his partner Jeff Cooper on Air Force 2 to Mexico City in 2016

Hunter had arranged to meet Alemán’s son for meetings over a ‘flippin gigantic’ business deal, according to Hunter’s emails

The revelations, laid bare in photos and emails on Hunter’s abandoned laptop, suggest Joe’s claim that he never spoke about business with Hunter was false

Hunter and Biden family friend Cooper hatched a plan in 2013 to invest in multiple businesses in Mexico and Latin America

I agree with your comment, “…Seattleites are getting what they voted for. ” That is true everywhere, not just Seattle. Seattle has engaged on a lengthy war against cars, reducing roads for motor vehicles and increase usage for bikes and pedestrians. I see why they do it, I just don’t agree with it because public transportation isn’t good enough yet. The people of Seattle voted and approved. Good for them. I decided to vote with my feet. JIll Biden’s got the long knives out for Kamala Harris.

One Democratic operative tells Axios’ Alayna Treene that most Democrats aren’t saying, “‘Oh, no, our heir apparent is f***ing up, what are we gonna do?’ It’s more that people think, ‘Oh, she’s f***ing up, maybe she shouldn’t be the heir apparent.’”
Some Democrats close to the White House are increasingly concerned about Harris’s handling of high-profile issues and political tone deafness, and question her ability to maintain the coalition that Biden rode to the White House, sources tell Axios’ Hans Nichols.

Here’s the title of the piece:

Biden aide charges “sabotage” of Harris

It’s not really sabotage to expand a bit on what we already know. Which is that sucking a mayor’s cock in the ’80s really shouldn’t be your stepping stone to Most Powerful (Wo)man In The World.

Not if Jill Biden can help it, anyway.

A few Republican members of Congress may be conservatives, although Liz Cheney is the only one I can think of right now, and she was just punished by the fascists for being a conservative. Howver, there is no conservativ party, only the Democrats and the fascists, and while you want us to believe you’re some kind of stateless person, you’re clearly more in sympathy with the latter than the former. This whole “conservative” business long was suspect anyway, because so-called “conservatives” were never reticent about embracing socialism when it lined their own pockets, and the only part of big government they didn’t like was the due process part.

I wonder if Doctor Dumbfuck invests in Florida real estate? (I don’t.)

I wonder what your recourse is, if you buy a condo unit, it passes inspection, and a couple years later you have to move out because the building is condemned and will be torn down?

It looks like most of the residents don’t have a lot of money — retirees, young families, etc. — and aren’t in a position to pay off mortgages on a building that doesn’t exist anymore.

I’m thinking money could come from the land value, mortgage insurance, suing the condo association and building inspectors (to tap their insurance), maybe some relocation assistance from disaster relief programs is available, and so on.

But any way you slice it, it’s a fucking disaster, even if you and yours weren’t buried under a pile of rubble and all you lost was your home and all your possessions.

You shouldn’t buy a home in a place with a public health system like Florida’s, anyway, even if the condos don’t fall down. Which, in Florida, they do. They’re now evacuating another one before it does.

I’ll bet studio units in 40-year-old buildings with cracked foundations just got cheaper than they already were.

It’s perfectly clear that Doctor Dumbfuck feels very threatened by a black woman rising to the pinnacle of power at the same time he’s sinking into a state of accelerating entropy.

59)I’ve seen some suggestions it may have been destabilized by the recent shock test on CVN-78. Probably had nothing to do with it, but it would be ironic, given it’s namesake.
