Dear God…Goldy is back to his infernal begging again.
Just because gubernatorial candidate and current state Attorney General Rob McKenna gets a car as a form of political contribution, doesn’t mean Goldy is entitled.
Simply put, Goldy isn’t influential enough. I mean, even as a journalist for a prestigious regional newspaper, Goldy doesn’t quite make the cut as an…
…overseer of business practices by the state’s automobile dealerships.
or as the state’s top dog consumer advocate who
…receives complaints against dealers for deceptive advertising practices, dishonest promotions or hidden costs.
or as the Washington consumer’s investigator, prosecutor, judge and executioner, who
…investigates, determines penalties, negotiates settlement agreements and — on occasion — takes miscreants to court.
It’s not like Goldy is ever going to be in a position to craft…
…settlements with car dealers over advertisements that allegedly violated the state’s consumer protection laws.
Nope…Goldy just doesn’t have the clout of an Attorney General.
But since he is something of a sports writer—namely, author of The Stranger’s Sports Blotter column—maybe the UW Huskey Football team should be donating season tickets to Goldy…
Roger Rabbit spews:
Looks like a potential conflict of interest — maybe the state attorney general should investigate him. Um, wait, er …
Carl spews:
What are you saying about the Huskies that you think they’ll need to bribe the Sports Blotter columnist?
Somerepublicandullard spews:
Wow, that’s some serious sleaze.

Roger Rabbit spews:
@3 Is there anything about McKenna that isn’t sleazy? After all, he’s a Republican.
Darryl spews:
Carl @ 2,
“What are you saying about the Huskies that you think they’ll need to bribe the Sports Blotter columnist?”
Oh, nothing. They’re all angels, I’m sure. But, you know…insurance.
ArtFart spews:
Maybe Goldy should consider the priesthood…
There was one Father Richard Crowley, who ministered to the people who worked on the Las Vegas “Strip” back in the old days. He’d hold Mass at 4:30 in the morning in one of the big hotel showrooms, attended by all the folks who’d just got off work–dealers, pit bosses, night managers, wait staff, musicians–and often a number of showgirls still in their costumes. His work eventually led to the opening of a real parish church off of Fremont Street, which is still there.
When Father Crowley got transferred out of town, it made some news that he put his car up for sale, figuring it might be unseemly elsewhere for a man of the cloth to be driving the fancy Mercedes sports car he’d received as a gift from Frank Sinatra. Some years later he turned up as chaplain at Cabrini Hospital here in Seattle, when my wife and I had the pleasure of getting to know him–that was her first gig out of nursing school. By then, Frank had persuaded him to accept something slightly less flashy: a Cadillac.

McKenna and the car dealership are quick to point out that there’s nothing illegal about McKenna receiving the use of the car. It’s reported as an in-kind campaign contribution, as required.
This reminds me of Mike! McGavick, who received a big-bonus payout from Safeco right before running as a Republican for the Senate (which wasn’t required under his contract, and was therefore a “gift”). Safeco and the Republicans argued that there was nothing illegal about it.
But that begs the question. Shouldn’t we expect more from our leaders? Shouldn’t we expect them to deal at arms-length with the industry they oversee? Should it really be enough for a candidate for high office in our state (or in the nation) to list among their qualifications that their financial transactions haven’t been (technically) illegal?
At least Huey Long could claim that he was the only candidate to have had his sanity certified by the courts. But that just goes to show how little we expect of politicians these days.

@7
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it isn’t sleazy.
Iaff Fireman spews:
Oh, like you mean when the Queen did the same?
http://blog.seattlepi.com/seat.....to-dealer/
And then the Queen let car dealers TRIPLE their document fees…
I love how apply the same level of standards to your own political allegiances.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@9 Okay, you’ve established that McKenna is as bad as Gregoire, now where do you go from there?
rhp6033 spews:
# 9: If you look at my post at # 7, you will note that I didn’t limit it to Republicans. I don’t like special-interest contributions at all, except that in the absence of limits on corporate contributions after the Citizens United case, Democrats would be foolish to go into battle unarmed, as it were.
But at least with Gregoire, there were lots of other people involved in the process – the legislature had to approve the fees, and her input was pretty much limited to NOT exercising her veto power. With McKenna, he can stop any investigation cold within his office by simply re-allocating resources away from that area. (I doubt he would be so foolish as to get caught telling staffers to “go easy” on a campaign contributor).

Actually, most folks will look at an elected offical who’s getting a free car from someone that they’re supposed to be regulating as a sleaze bag.
