It took me a while to recover, and then explain to her why I reacted the way I did, about how McCain left his first wife, the one who had waited for him while he was a POW, for a prettier woman who was not disabled and was rich to boot. By the way – an officer committing adultery while in the service is guilty of a crime and subject to courts-martial. The military still prosecutes officers for such conduct, although lately it tends to turn a blind eye to such conduct among enlisted men, as long as it is kept quiet.
If McCain was questioned about it by a superior officer and lied about it, then he would also be guilty of another crime – “false reporting”, and possibly “obstruction of justice”.
Isn’t this the reasoning the wingnuts gave for why Bill Clinton needed to be impeached and removed from office?
27
rhp6033spews:
My guess is that the military knew about McCain’s adultery, but didn’t prosecute him because (a) he was a former POW and the military wanted to portray all POWs as heroes, (b) his father and grandfather were all admirals in the Navy, (c) he was a “ring-knocker” (Naval Acadamy graduate – they are rumored to protect their own), and (d) he promised to leave the military at the earliest opportunity, and was advised that if he didn’t do so he would be involuntarily removed by courts-martial.

Still, I’m waiting for someone to explain to me why Bill clinton getting caught for having sex with an intern once and lying about it automaticially disqualifies him from the Presidency and justifies his impeachment and removal from office, while McCain gets a pass.
And don’t tell me that it’s because Clinton lying about it was “illegal”. McCain’s adultery while an officer in the military was also illegal, justifying a courts-martial and punishment ranging from dishonerable discharge and forfeiture of benefits to imprisonment.
Really, I’m just trying to figure out the rules here – where is the moral outrage among the Republicans? Where is the indignent defense of “family values”? Where is the insistance that their candidate be a “Man of God”?
Edwards had an affair, has admitted to it, and everyone agrees that his political career is now over (much to the glee of the Republican talking heads). But these same people are pushing for McCain as the next president?????
36
YLBspews:
You know there are a lot of people out there who don’t use the internet and of those that do, only occasionally for the e-mail or limited browsing of portal sites.
They’d never think of sitting and reading a whole article on-line or surfing from one link to another examining different perspectives to ferret out the truth. If they do read something approaching an article you know it’s from one of those bogus chain e-mails chock full of falsehoods.
They are the low information voters, the emotional voters. Any serious political campaign knows how crucial they are to winning an election.
Republicans do whatever they can to manipulate these people to the throw the lever the Republican way.
And as for the people at the short end of the Republican stick? Ruthlessly suppress their votes. Add voting machine fraud to the mix which is next to undetectable leaving only circumstancial evidence. And it happened just as badly in 2006 as it did in 2004. Make no mistake. It will be even worse in November.
The RNC warchest is full. The 527’s are out there. It’s going to be close.
37
rhp6033spews:
By the way, as an Evangelical Christian, I am often reminded by my fellow church members that a President must be a “Godly person”.
So in that light, let’s look at what the New Testiment says about the qualifications for leadership in the church:
“Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) “
I Timothy Chap. 3, vs. 2-5 (NIV).
Which candidate most closely fills those requirements? Which candidate has only had one wife? Which candiate is more “temperate, self-controlled… not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome”? Which one has proven himself to be “not a lover of money”?
38
proud leftistspews:
McCain’s lies about his philandering history are quite telling with regard to his character. His book claims he didn’t start his affair with Cindy until after he’d left his wife, yet the divorce papers show that to be untrue. Moreover, he lied about his age when he met Cindy. Now, I understand that horniness can cause a guy to shade the truth a bit, but McCain seems to too easily slip into dishonesty when dishonesty serves his immediate goals.
@32, it’s my right as a troll to twist a post’s point however I see fit.

What about the value of being a coward? This bitch made 30 – COUNT EM 30 fucking Propaganda for the VC!
He was a coward who caved in. What’s more, he violated an oath. Now he wants to take an oath to defend the US against all enemies foreign and domestic – why should we trust that since he regularly breaks his word?
He cheated on his disfigured wife, divorced her – and broke an oath.
He also violated Article V of the Military Code of Conduct. For all you chickenhawk right wingers out there let me show you what that says…
“When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am required to give name, rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies or harmful to their cause.”
So – he’s not got very good values if you ask me – or the families of service men who were killed, injured or captured as a result of his work on behalf of the enemy!

Nope. That’s what Newt Gingrich said about Bill Clinton in 1998 (while Newt was having an affair with an aid in his office while still married to his 2nd wife). I’m just trying to figure out the rules here.
“Are you some kind of religious nut, or something?”
Guilty. If you’ve been following my posts over the past year or so, you would know that.
43
YLBspews:
How Republicans hold power – one suppressed vote at a time:
Russell Baughman, 61, has fought in three conflicts as a part of the United States Army. He was on the front lines in Vietnam in March of 1967 during a battle that has since become known as “the bloodiest week.” He was sent to Panama shortly after the 1989 U.S. invasion as part of a security maintenance force. And he spent six months in the deserts of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during the Gulf War in the early ’90s.
His military discharge papers feature a paragraph’s worth of honors and awards, like the national defense service medal, the Vietnam service medal with two bronze service stars, the combat/infantry badge and a purple heart for being wounded during combat.
So when Baughman arrived at his polling place at precinct 52 in Lawrence March 11 for the special election, he wasn’t expecting to have a problem voting in the country he had defended.
But since Indiana passed its new Voter ID law, which requires every voter to have a valid, government-issued photo ID, Baughman’s identification was no longer good enough.
He had with him his expired driver’s license (he rides a bicycle), his Department of Veterans Affairs card (featuring his purple heart endorsement) and, of all things, his voter’s registration card.
But Baughman was told that neither of his photo IDs were valid. His driver’s license didn’t count because it was expired and his Veterans Affairs card didn’t count because it didn’t feature any expiration date at all.
“I’ve been on the voting rolls since 1968,” Baughman said, “and all of a sudden they expect my identity to change. There was no change.”
Baughman was offered a provisional ballot. The print was so small that the polling officials had to fetch a magnifying glass. After filling out a provisional ballot, the voter has 10 days to prove his or her identity at their county clerk’s office. During this time the voter must come up with the appropriate identification.
But herein lay Baughman’s problem.
He had been to the license branch several times, trying to attain a new photo ID card, and had been denied. In order to get a new photo ID, one must have one form of primary identification: an original birth certificate or naturalization card, a U.S. Veterans Universal Access Identification card, a current military ID card or a valid U.S. passport.
The League of Women Voters estimate 21 million Americans do not have photo ID. They are in the crosshairs of the relentless Republican war on small d democracy.
If you had made last year as much money as John McCain spent on household help alone $273,000 — you’d be richer than 95% of American families. The median household income in the United States is $48,201 per year, meaning that John McCain spent over five times as much on servants as the typical household earns in an entire year.
But he was a POW!

I believe that what people are saying here is that many Republican evengelical or other Christian “values” voters DO care whether their candidate is or has been a lying, cheating sack of shit, and that they might care to re-evaluate their support for McCain in the light of him being one.
We Democrats, on the other hand, don’t believe that the fact that McCain is a lying, cheating sack of shit should disqualify him for high office, but rather that his plans to privatize Social Security and enlarge our budget deficits through self-serving tax cuts, along with his support for the Iraq War and his clear propensity toward also going to war with Iran, China and Russia (possibly simultaneously) DO.

I merely pointed out that McCain’s conduct as an adulterer (along with his anger issues) would disqualify him from serving as a deacon or overseer at my church, not to mention was a crime under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
So, according to the standards Republicans applied to Bill Clinton, then he should be removed from office (impeached as a Senator?) and forbidden from ever again holding public offic.
And your response is…. Wes Clark is accused by some as a war criminal?
Geez, try to keep up with the discussion, will you? At the rate this is going, it’s like one of the Smother’s Brother’s routines, where Tommy Smothers is flustered and eventually stammers “…bbbbbut, Mother always loved you best!”

YLB spews:

By the way, as an Evangelical Christian, I am often reminded by my fellow church members that a President must be a “Godly person”.
So in that light, let’s look at what the New Testiment says about the qualifications for leadership in the church:
I Timothy Chap. 3, vs. 2-5 (NIV).
Which candidate most closely fills those requirements? Which candidate has only had one wife? Which candiate is more “temperate, self-controlled… not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome”? Which one has proven himself to be “not a lover of money”?
proud leftist spews:
McCain’s lies about his philandering history are quite telling with regard to his character. His book claims he didn’t start his affair with Cindy until after he’d left his wife, yet the divorce papers show that to be untrue. Moreover, he lied about his age when he met Cindy. Now, I understand that horniness can cause a guy to shade the truth a bit, but McCain seems to too easily slip into dishonesty when dishonesty serves his immediate goals.

Let’s talk more about McSame’s family values…

Troll @ 39: “BTW, are you saying any person who has an extramariatal affair isn’t fit to hold office, or even hold a job?

If you had made last year as much money as John McCain spent on household help alone $273,000 — you’d be richer than 95% of American families. The median household income in the United States is $48,201 per year, meaning that John McCain spent over five times as much on servants as the typical household earns in an entire year.
But he was a POW!

Then again, you’d think that a US Senator would know something about the economy, the difference between Sunni and Shia, that Pakistan and Iraq do not share a border, or cap-and-trade proposals, or that an economic stimulus package consists of government spending, or etc. etc. etc.

You Lefties are sure ones to utter the words “court martial.” You’re the same ones who flip-flop on PLC* Wes Clark. One day, you’re accusing him of war crimes in Bosnia, the next you want him for VP with 0bama. Wes Clark isn’t running for president. He’s only something else to talk about instead of McCain’s violation of the UCMC, isn’t he? Why not defend McCain on the merits if he’s not liable for court martial? Or is all you have just a lot of pointing in a different direction?
Yeah, I thought so.
rhp6033 spews:
TRM @ 48: Boy, talk about an attempt at mis-direction!

And what about Exodus 21:22-23? Here it is clear that causing a woman to miscarry results in punishment. The Bible also states over and over that an increase of children are a blessing from God, and a lack of children is a curse from God (cp. Hosea 9:14).

Quite simply, what good does it do to call people names and use such language? Of the regular posters on this website, more than a few of them do just that, do nothing but call people names and offer no substance, no argument, and simply avoid and do not deal with the issues.
Why should we take you seriously?
