An interesting essay here. (Got the tip from a diary at DK).

    Some excerpts:

We have been gradually disempowered by a corporate state…

Orwell warned of a world where books were banned. Huxley warned of a world where no one wanted to read books.

The corporation state, hiding behind the smokescreen of the public relations industry, the entertainment industry and the tawdry materialism of a consumer society, devours us from the inside out. It owes no allegiance to us or the nation.

Corporations, who hire attractive spokespeople like Barack Obama…

Speculators and swindlers have looted the U.S. Treasury and stolen billions from small shareholders…Civil liberties, including habeas corpus and protection from warrantless wiretapping, have been taken away.

And as more and more people realize that they have been used and robbed, we will move swiftly from Huxley’s “Brave New World” to Orwell’s “1984.”

    A disturbing but insightful essay.

    @7 Michael

I’m just reading the linked essay, and came across this gem about pre-Revolution France:

The rule of law had been vested in a class of pampered imbeciles…

How true for our times too…

And those “pampered imbeciles” are worshipped and deified by everyone I know that calls themselves a christian conservative. The book burners. The stockpilers of weapons and highly preserved food. Those slobbering idolaters of ignorance who actively reject the source of their civilization.

They don’t even really know what they hate. Hate has its own purpose, its own emotional feedstock. It needs no specific object to exist. It is the closing of the intellect and reverting to the animal.

The French and the Germans have both proven that. Thats what the Taliban is.

Kunster sometimes uses his blog to just go off and have a little fun, nothing wrong with that, but you have to take that into consideration when you’re reading it. This weeks entry seemed more sober and completely spot on.

    He also has a podcast.

Although there’s still a couple of trading days left, it looks like my stock market results for this year are going to be in the +20% range. Sure beats the 1/10 of 1% that banks pay on passbook savings, and beats hell out of working for Republicans for minimum wage! I don’t work, and don’t see why anyone else should work. Getting free money by owning Capital is the only way to go.

@7 James Howard Kunstler is a guy that I’m a bit ambivalent about. His prediction for the Dow fell flat, obviously he couldn’t see QE2 coming, but then not many could. You can look in his past and see him get way overwrought about Y2K.

But there’s no doubt he’s an enormously entertaining writer – at times. That particular CFN was him at his entertaining best. I couldn’t get through The Long Emergency and by the time I put the book down, rejected his thesis. Not that I disagreed with it all that much – it’s just that I thought the book itself defeated almost everything he was trying to say. Bruce Sterling should have written that book.

But still I like JHK. I accept his writings on suburbia and for good yucks I highly recommend the movie reviews and his memoirs about his hip replacement on his website – they’re hilarious.

His TED talk is a classic – not to be missed.

Kunstler’s prognostications are done for fun, not profit. And when you’re doing something for fun, why not have a little fun with it.

    Tucker Carlson jumps the shark.

Carlson says, “Michael Vick killed dogs, and he did (it) in a heartless and cruel way.” He added, “I think personally he should have been executed for that.”
Carlson, a conservative commentator, is angry that Obama told Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie he believes people who have paid for their crimes should have the opportunity to contribute to society again.

Tucker doesn’t go far enough, ALL crimes should carry the death penalty. Jaywalking, littering, speeding, tearing that little tag off your mattress …
