The FBI released new crime data today showing “crime numbers across nearly every category continued to fall in 2023.” Murders tumbled 13%, suggesting 2023 may see the largest single-year decline in murders “ever recorded” when full-year data becomes available. Rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults also declined sharply. But auto thefts were up in large cities in all regions except the West, where auto thefts declined.

In sworn testimony before the Senate in 2021.

The withdrawal from Afghanistan and the evacuation of Kabul was “a logistical success but a strategic failure,” the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff has told the Senate.

Gen Mark Milley gave the stark assessment at an extraordinary hearing of the Senate armed services committee to examine the US departure, which also became a postmortem on the 20-year war that preceded it.
    …
Milley said it was the advice of the military leadership to stick to the end of August deadline to complete the departure, which the Taliban had accepted.

If the US had stayed on into September to try to evacuate more people, he said: “We would have been at war with the Taliban again,” requiring an extra 20,000 troops to clear Kabul of Taliban fighters and retake Bagram air base near the capital, which the US had abandoned in July.

As Americans continue to struggle in a heavily competitive real estate market, a group of Democratic lawmakers are introducing a bill in Congress that aims to restrict hedge funds from buying up single-family homes.

President Biden is calling on Congress to pass a mortgage relief credit that would provide middle-class first-time homebuyers with an annual tax credit of $5,000 a year for two years. This is the equivalent of reducing the mortgage rate by more than 1.5 percentage points for two years on the median home, and will help more than 3.5 million middle-class families purchase their first home over the next two years.

Unilever has faced growing calls over recent years, including from activist investors, to overhaul its sprawling business amid wide fluctuations in the share price.
    …
The Ben & Jerry’s brand has also proven a thorn in the company’s side, taking an active stance on various political issues.

In 2023, Unilever faced a U.S. lawsuit claiming it misled investors by not immediately disclosing a decision by Ben & Jerry’s to stop selling ice cream in Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories, a case that was ultimately dismissed, according to Reuters.

Earlier in the year it also faced backlash over Ben & Jerry’s calls for the return of “stolen” U.S. indigenous land.

Terry Smith, managing director of Unilever’s 10th largest shareholder Fundsmith, said the restructuring was positive news and described Ben & Jerry’s as the “fly in the ointment” of the ice cream business.

“Prior management seem to have managed to buy a company without actually getting control of it,” he told Sky News’ Ian King on Tuesday.

No, it will help raise home prices.

When the government steps in and does stuff like this it makes things worse. Some examples:

    1. First time home buyer credit during The Great Recession. Enabled young people to purchase homes while the values were still plummeting, which put them underwater on their purchases, quickly.

    2. New auto purchase credit during The Great Recession caused used car values to plummet. Own a car a couple of years old? Guess what, because the government paid your neighbor to prop up GM by buying a new car, your car is less appealing because there’s no credit for purchase. Your car is worth less on the open market.

The tax credit that a home purchase will generate enables the buyer to afford a larger payment in some manner. It’s not just buyers who see that – sellers do, too, and the market responds by repricing.

Higher home prices due to government subsidy. Desperation from the Biden White House.

    The new Hit Single

‘Saying the quit part out loud (Gotta get that Zuckerberg donation)’

Massachusetts House Rep Jake Auchincloss, D did two media hits today. One on a local station and one on MSNBC.

“I’ve been in public office for ten years. I’ve defended some very unpopular speech. This is not a first ammendment concern. There’s a difference between freedom of Speech and freedom of Reach. Americans can post anything they want anywhere they want within the political domain. They can criticize Biden they can criticize Trump they can criticize me. Freedom of speech is not freedom of reach (eds note, a phrase he finds so clever it popped up five times in the two inteviews) You do not have the constitutional right to have your post amplified to 100m people.”

So, in plain language. You’re not actually worried about TikTok, owned by Byte Dance a company with almost entirely non-Chinese shareholders and ownership including a 20% stake held by all employees as part of the start up agreement. You’re concerned that ordinary smart people who see through the bullshit of $B profits from greedflation, explosive CEO pay and a dead middle class, Billionaires financing your campaigns to stay in power can talk to lots of people.

The issue is learning that Kelloggs CEO is fine raising prices way beyond the cost of raw materials and urging people who can barely afford food have cereal for dinner rather than clawing back a few million of his compensation package. The issue is people sharing a back bench House Rep. flat out saying the problem is people learning about how in the tank for old form social media he is. The issue is Apple needing to sell 6.3 million Macs every year regardless of if anyone needs a new Mac. “It’s got THREE cameras next to each other. Yours doesn’t. Finance it. The banks need their cut too.”

The issue is learning about a genocide being perpetrated with our tax dollars and the forced starvation that’s keeping it going at a rapid pace. The issue is learning that the 20 happiest contries on the Earth of which we are no longer one have Universal Health care. It’s easier to be happy when you don’t have to choose between getting that festering ulcer treated or food.

From a discussion on future cuts
“Why does anyone expect any rate cut anywhere in the near future? All measures of inflation are proving that inflation is quite sticky. It’s not out of control but it’s not at/below where the Fed wants it to be. The stock market continues to be at all time highs. There is SO MUCH money out there and that’s contributing to real estate prices being so high. There’s no way a rate cut is going to come with stocks at all time highs. It simply doesn’t make sense. The economy is chugging right along better than anyone expected.

So…why do we keep getting this rate cut narrative? It’s because inflation is self-fulfilling. The fed knows they aren’t dropping rates any time soon but if they admit that inflation is still hanging around as an issue it becomes even harder to tame.”

“60% of women and 53% of men supported the abortion referendum, per the exit poll.

Seventy-seven percent of those ages 18-29 were for the abortion referendum

Overall, voters said 61-37% that abortion should be legal rather than illegal in all or most cases, and 89% of those who said it should be legal backed the referendum, establishing a right to abortion in the state’s constitution, according to the exit polls.”

HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
