    @11 Skepticism is warranted. If you read Newsweek’s story, here, there’s a bunch of discrepancies.

    (1) Let’s start with this: We don’t know his name, and he’s asking for donations. Newsweek says TikTok took down his video (why, if it was legit?).

    (2) Newsweek’s story says “he was ordered to pay for gear he brought home from his last deployed mission in Afghanistan.”

    (3) It also quoted him saying, “Some lower-level dudes including myself were like, ‘No, this stuff is expensive. I’m not leaving this.'” If so, why did he get billed when his fellow “lower-level dudes” didn’t? Or if they did, why aren’t we hearing from them, too?

    (4) In his video, he displayed “a sheet of paper with costs attributed to his name” totaling $3,561.26, but “did not divulge or specify what those costs were associated with.” He also said he’s being charged $500 to $1,000; wouldn’t an actual bill be for a specific amount?

    (5) He “ended the video by thanking anyone who could help fund his gear return,” i.e. asking for money.

    (6) He’s apparently out of the Army now, but says “they want to charge me.” He still owes the Army money after leaving the service? That’s not how they operate. It would’ve been taken out of his separation pay.

    Further points to wonder about: Why hasn’t reputable media picked up this story? (It’s only circulating on conservative websites.) Why haven’t we heard from the congressman he complained to? (Most likely because there was no such complaint. While it’s plausible the Army bureaucracy might initially bill a soldier for lost gear, there’s no fucking way that would stand once it came to the attention of Pentagon brass, the administration, or his congressman and senators. A soldier returning from a combat zone simply isn’t going to be made to pay for equipment he was “ordered” to leave behind, or that was lost in combat conditions (and the Newsweek story states it wasn’t left behind, so why is he being charged for it?).

    At this point I’m not prepared to say the video is fake, and the “soldier” is an actor, but the video’s political motivation is barely concealed and his story isn’t adding up. And anyway, if this story is the real deal, after the Newsweek publicity, you can be sure the Defense Department will look into it. One more or another, I don’t think we’ve heard the last of it; it’ll either be debunked, or the situation will be corrected.

    In any case, I’m not the only one who’s skeptical; let’s look at some of the comments under the YouTube video:

    “I was infantry and later reclassed to supply and have a few deployments, his story made no sense. If what he said was the case, he would have taken care of it when they returned home. We had guys get things destroyed via enemy action and it was not a complex process to get it replaced or removed from your hand receipt. Also, there is basically zero chance that in 2 years the dude didn’t have need of his IFAK, body armor, and assault pack for some type of training as infantry and no one was like ‘hey where is your gear?'”

    “That tripled in cost very quickly, and then tried to turn it into a political statement. Something aint right.”

    “I’m willing to bet he was honest in the first part, which is where he said he left 500-1000 in Afghanistan and it wasn’t FLIPLed. But then he shows his bill for $3500 (that includes gear lost here) to make people more sympathetic and to hopefully send him some money.”

    “I’ve never been in the military, but I would have thought, if he was really worried about this, he would have figured it out the moment he got back to another base. Not 3 years later.”

    “The likelihood this soldier will be a speaker at a CPAC event is not 0%.”

    “Total BS once he returned from the combat zone his gear would have been inventory and any loss would have been noted and the paperwork would have been done.”

    “It’s a grift. It’s always a grift.”

    Poorly selected Democrat candidates could end up getting Trump elected not just once, but twice.

    @16 A vice president unprepared/unqualified to be president? That pretty much describes every GOP veep of the last half-century. So much so, in fact, that I always suspected GOP nominees chose running mates like Dan Quayle as insurance against being impeached (“if you remove me, you get him”).

    Nothing to see here, move along, folks. By the way, if Republicans somehow managed to impeach and remove Biden, they’d get President Kamala.

    @17 A sure way to end up with untrained military vets* teaching your kids is threatening certificated teachers with jail if they tape a rainbow picture to the classroom wall. Paying lower salaries than the local McDonald’s helps get rid of qualified teachers, too.
