Ballots are out. If you know who and what you want to vote for, get it in early, and stop by the Seattle Chapter of Drinking Liberally. If you don’t know, stop by and discuss your choices over a cold drink.
The Seattle Chapter of Drinking Liberally meets every Tuesday at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern (2409 10th Ave E, Seattle) starting at 8pm. You’ll find us on the back patio.
Chapters of Living Liberally are all over the place…if you can’t make it to the Seattle chapter, stop by another chapter near you.

It was, what, 10 days ago, mebbe, that one of y’all libbies were pointing out how well Indy5 was doing and that Sound of Freedom would crash and burn.
It’s probably a one-off. I mean, conservatives supporting a movie to make it successful is about as likely as conservatives tanking America’s # 1 beer by suddenly not supporting it, amirite?
Last week Sound of Freedom, at $27.2 million, grossed more than double what Indy5 ($12.2M) grossed. At $85M total gross it’s closing in on $100 million.
Of the 20 top flicks, Sound of Freedom was the only one not to show a drop-off in attendance after its first week in release. While Indy5 saw a 38% decrease in weekly sales, Sound of Freedom saw a 55% increase in sales.
Which is something. I heard Darryl saw it, and left the theater in tears.

Anchor was doing just fine when the guys from Skyy Vodka bought it. They tried to take it from a mostly regional West Coast brand to a national. They didn’t do expansion of capacity or dick around with the product line. One IPA added and the failed Bock Beer was all the innovation they tried.
Sapporo now says it was losing big money when they acquired but there isn’t any publicly available info to back that up. But it’s possible the marketing and ramp of of distribution cut into the bottom line to turn a profitable regional into a losing national.
Enter Sapporo. Their reason for buying Anchor was to have the ability to brew their own labels in the US and not need to deal with importation and shipping. But Anchor was not suited to that. Anchor…Ales, cool ships, open fermentation, classic brass kettles. Sapporo, modern, lager, long ferment times. it was a weird fit from the get go Sapporo sunk a bunch of money into fermentation tanks and refrigeration for lagers. (If you don’t know the uniqueness of the Anchor Brewery there are plenty of ways you can research it.)
Then they did the disastrous rebrand killing the packaging and alienating the core Anchor customers even in the Bay Area. Anecdotally, in the PNW Anchor went from a brand in all Kroeger stores and PCC/Whole Foods to packaging that was utterly indistinguishable from Widmer Hef. Kroeger dropped it. Then they tried 22oz can singles that were showing up in the Jackson’s convenience chain and for a hot minute Safeway. But up against the 8-9% 22 oz that are all the rage in the convenience market a regular beer like Anchor didn’t succeed. Add in the marketing push for the 10 or so new products Sapporo tried to put out there (fruit beers, a new line of multiple IPAs, An Anchor Lager which there was really no market for) and Sapporo was hemorrhaging money.
Then they bought the much larger capacity Stone (350Kbbl at East and West Coast facilities) that does not have the unique set up of Anchor AND was already set up for lagers and no one thought they would keep Anchor for long. Most figured they’d find a buyer. No matter what Sapporo has said privately they didn’t really try to find a suitable buyer but just decided to cut their losses once the Stone sale was complete. Unionization likely played a big part in this as Sapporo tried to stop/break the union from the get go.
Now to your question. Reubens brews about 1700bbl a year. Reubens distributes to WA, ID, OR. Anchor with Sapporo’s expansion has a capacity of 300,000bbl. A new investor can sell off a lot of that equipment immediately and still have plenty of capacity to be a West Coast Regional powerhouse. So yes, Anchor is potentially far more valuable that Reubens. Sapporo had no interest in contract brewing which those “Ultra Right beer” folks need. A reborn Anchor could rent out their excess capacity to label beers for Costco, Trader Joe’s etc.
Can they make it work financially? Depends on what they try to do. Focus on the West Coast and the core labels and really push to get all their draft accounts they lost in the rebrand back? Probably. Try to be a powerhouse National brand, no. Yeungling, Steel City, Genesee makes this model work and there’s no reason Anchor can’t too with some strategic marketing.

Might work but then again how does a Republican aligned Jewish Group really make inroads against a now three term Democratic Congresswoman running for reelection in the primary?
Her district polling is/was quite a bit higher than her state/national. Right now her only primary challenger is Sarah Gad who was last seen getting 10% of the vote in the IL-01 Primary in 2020. Not exactly a stellar candidate for AIPAC to get behind.
