Alabama. Police murder an inmate.
Walker County Sheriff deputies engage in a wellness check at the request of family members of Anthony Mitchell, 33. The family relay his mental health history and history of episodes.
Sheriffs’ deputies arrive at the house and claim that Mitchell fired a shot at them and ran into the woods while painted with black spray paint (photos back this part of the claim up) and after a search of the woods take him into custody. No evidence of a weapon or physical evidence of a fired shot exists to date. so…”Take our word for it” – Deputies.
Mitchell is taken to Walker County jail where he is placed naked in a concrete cell with no bed or toilet. He is kept there for at least five days. We know this happened because a female guard at the county jail documented it with photographs. Official records and mandatory record keeping get sketchy at this point but what is clear is no Mental Health professionals are consulted during this time.
Deputies then create a false report saying that Mitchell was determined to need medical aid and was “Conscious and responsive” (sworn signed statement) when he was admitted to a local hospital. Now under video released due to Mitchell’s family civil suit, four Sheriff’s deputies can be seen carrying Mitchell to a transport by his arms and legs with his head fully relaxed and placing him on the ground before loading him. At no point does Mitchell’s head or limbs move. (pssst…they were lying about him being responsive.)
He passed away at the hospital. The attending physician noted that “An internal rectal temperature of 75 is very hard to explain unless the patient spent a significant amount of time in a refrigerated environment.” This 75 reading was taken while Mitchell was still alive, barely.
The lawsuit alleges, based on the evidence revealed by the prison guard who contacted the family that Mitchell was punished by leaving him in the jail’s walk in cooler or freezer for an extended period of time.
OF COURSE, the Walker County Sheriff fired the guard for contacting the family. The only unforgiveable sin is not murder but not backing your fellow officers.
So not only did many, many deputies lie about the condition and treatment of the prisoner and tried to cover it up, countless staff of the jail were aware of what was happening.
So the county is on the hook for a massive wrongful death settlement AND the corrections officer who was fired for bringing it to light is going to live very comfortably for a long time on a whistleblower protection/wrongful termination settlement.
This cannot be reformed.

Probably somebody should hang for this torture murder, but we all know that won’t happen. However, if massive settlements to the family and fired guard make the county uninsurable, the next time this happens will bankrupt the county and put the jail in private hands, then it can be razed and the site turned into a peace park.

He was carried to the vehicle by two deputies. His head was up while they were carrying him because he wanted to see where he was being taken. He relaxed his head when they put him on the ground, and then elevated his head again after they opened the car door and lifted him again.
I’m sure that everything else you wrote is 100% accurate, but let’s not write things that are disputed by the very video you cite.
My guess is he died due to reperfusion injury. Bringing a patient back from 72 degrees (the temperature in the link) is really difficult unless it’s done with extreme caution. There probably aren’t that many frozen lakes in Alabama, so the ERs there might not be experienced in the necessary procedures.

Give us a time stamp of when he moves. Is it at 19 seconds when one of the officers appears to be holding his neck? Maybe it’s at 26 seconds when the office releases him and his head falls limply to the floor? :29-:38 when he’s on the floor utterly motionless? Did he move an arm or leg or Head in those nine seconds? Not at all but you saw it. Or perhaps you’re referring to :41 when the officers pick him back up and the force of gravity causes his legs to bend a bit. Is it AFTER the door obscures the view and all THREE officers are required to shove him in the car at :48-:57? If you’ve got to lie about the video to rebut hoping no one will click through…. But you’re right. There were only three officers present.
It would actually be quite surprising for a person in an advanced stage of hypothermia to be responsive. But I digress.
