Looking for something to do tonight? How about stopping by the Seattle Chapter of Drinking Liberally for a dose of politics over a pint?
The Seattle chapter of DL meets every Tuesday at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern (2409 10th Ave E, Seattle) starting at 8pm. We are still out on the patio (under an awning) in the back. The kitchen is still closed, but feel free to bring your own dinner. Note that a COVID vaccination card and ID are required to enter the Roanoke.
Chapters of Drinking Liberally can be found all over the place. If you can’t make the Seattle chapter, find a chapter near you.

The first Black chair of Iowa’s Democratic Party says he received a series of racist messages, including a lynching threat, after writing an opinion piece in a local newspaper criticizing former President Donald Trump and the state Republican officials who stood with him at a recent rally in Des Moines.

Wow look at the pic in that article.. “Diverse” bunch of supporters for drumpf, no? drumpf is “the one” they’ve been waiting for.

The latest Q-poll is out.
First Vegetable Joe Biden is mired in shit up to his chest. 37% approval overall among adults, and favorability below Trump’s.
Those are the same top three mentioned by the independent respondents. Go figure. Additionally, climate change or proper use of a pronoun to address a dude in a skirt who just got promoted to admiral are not on the list.

Japan’s election for the Lower House got underway yesterday. Very short campaign, only 12 days. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party will win, the question is by how much.

Has any republican criticized the wretched press release about the death of Colin Powell from the impotent, bankrupted, twice impeached, failed reality television actor who hires prostitutes to jerk him off with rubber gloves ?
Any republican? Any?
RedReformed spews:
@2,4,7. That’s why republicans have to cheat to get elected. The majority does not like republican personalities or their policies. When voting is free and fair, they do not win general elections.
Texas republicans forcing 11 year old girls to give birth to their rapist’s children is not generally popular.

A quick repost from the last thread for emphasis (and to once again push Desperately Poor Bobby’s buttons):
It’s been seventeen years since any Republican won a nationwide popular vote. Since 1988, in over thirty two years, they’ve only managed it twice. in the last fifty three years and fourteen cycles Republicans have won a majority only five times.
The chances of it ever happening again have grown steadily dimmer.

Colin Powell died because he was 84 years old and suffered from multiple myeloma. He also contracted COVID-19.

When First Vegetable Joe Biden, whom Jayapal referred to as “the closer”, finally caves to Manchin’s $1.5 trillion red line, we can begin discussing Sinema’s refusal to permit tax increases in order to pay for it.
We heard about that last week, but hey, if there’s no deal, there’s nothing to tax.

It’s safest not to talk to police. Even if you believe doing so would be “helpful”. They are not there to get your help. They are there to put you in jail. Call your lawyer.
I think it’s very plausible that Rep. Fortenberry either forgot about the conversation he’d previously had where he learned about foreign money in his campaign, or thought that it was not relevant or did not apply. And the great irony is that, under this statute the thing that he is accused of lying about does not have to be relevant or actually apply. It does not actually matter that a bunch of foreign spies were trying to buy a Nebraska Congressperson. It only matters that he answered falsely when asked if he knew about it.

Vicious Troll spews:
Colin Powell, referring to Trump in 2016. No matter how stupid Trump looked doing it, it worked. He won in 2016 and his numbers with each minority group were better in 2020 than in 2016.

Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
Media statements from Rolovich’s lawyer indicate that his client’s “sincerely held religious belief” are rooted in an absolute conviction opposing all forms of abortion under all circumstances and his belief that all of the Coronavirus vaccines are derived from abortion.
Fetal cell line HEK 293 was used during the research and development phase of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. To make the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, scientists infect PER.C6 fetal cell lines to grow the adenovirus vector. This is not unusual. Fetal cell lines have been used in the development of many prescription and nonprescription drugs. And they are also used in development of cosmetics, flavor additives, and stabilizers.
This presents a significant challenge to Mr. Rolovich’s claims, because any use of any of these other products or medicines by Mr. Rolovich or his family is relevant to the defense against his civil claims of wrongful termination and would likely be seen to greatly weaken his predicate claims of “sincerely held religious belief”.
That may explain why Mr. Rolovich’s attorney has focused so much of his media and other public facing statements about his lawsuit on the exact circumstances of his client’s termination – how he was informed, the timing, his removal from university property by uniformed security, etc., rather than on details relevant to his client’s assertions. Mr. Rolovich is certainly not alone in having retained an attorney who is now emailing reporters with statements about their client’s “treatment”. But his case will probably serve as a bellwether. And it is not starting off on solid legal ground.
Rolovich’s attorney has shared that his client’s application for a religious exemption waiver to the mandate was denied. The leadership hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church do not support the claims. And even the Pope has urged Catholics to get vaccinated. But under the law Mr. Rolovich is free to seek and discover his own unique moral guidelines according to his own unique understanding of his religion. The challenge for his attorney may be in establishing the existence of those moral guidelines to a court in a way that is consistent throughout his client’s life.
This is another good example of the common mistake so many people make, and particularly “conservatives” seem to make. A belief that the law is a structure of “techniques” and that “right or wrong” and “facts” are less relevant than a clever exploitation of those “techniques”. I see great disappointment in their future.
