    A private group announced Monday that it has constructed a half-mile wall along a section of the U.S.-Mexico border in New Mexico, in what it said was a first in the border debate.

    The 18-foot steel bollard wall is similar to the designs used by the Border Patrol, sealing off a part of the border that had been a striking gap in existing fencing, according to We Build the Wall, the group behind the new section.

    Former Trump adviser Steven Bannon, who chairs the advisory committee for the group, told CNN that the wall had connected two sections of existing fencing that stretched for 21 miles.

    “Border Patrol told us it’s the No. 1 most important miles to close. The tough terrain always left it off the government list, and that’s what we focus on — private land that is not in the program and take the toughest first,” Bannon said.

    Clark County’s Don Benton, completely in keeping with his character and temperament, is not only willing but eager to be Trump’s loyal little suckup.

    For now, Benton is running the Selective Service (yes, we still have draft registration in the USA). When he was appointed to run that agency in 2017, the first thing he did was impose a dress code on its female employees that would do Annie Wright proud. That lasted all of two weeks.

    Inevitably, that morphed into major morale problems, where career employees say a climate of fear and distrust now pervades the agency.

    And then there’s this:

    “All presidents fill out their administrations with political appointees, but Benton’s lack of military experience made him an unusual pick to head the Selective Service, which is a civilian agency but has been led by men with lengthy military careers. Benton briefly joined the Army in the 1970s and completed basic training in California, but quit after he says he was not put into a training program he’d been promised. He went to community college instead, and started his political career as a student trustee.”

    “Quit because he wasn’t put into a training program he was promised.” Huh. Benton was born too late for Vietnam (he was 11 years ago when Tet happened), so he had the opportunity to serve in a peacetime army, but bailed because he didn’t get the training he wanted. The guys of my generation who were drafted into the infantry and sent to Vietnam would laugh at that (if they could; tens of thousands of them can’t, because they’re dead). What a fucking pussy.

    “Elected state Republican Party chairman in 2000, Benton was ousted eight months later after angering some party leaders by firing staff, changing the locks on the offices and unilaterally trying to move the party headquarters. In 2013, he compared a fellow GOP state senator, Ann Rivers, to a ‘trashy, trampy-mouthed little girl’ after she swore at him during an argument in a caucus meeting.”

    Now hear this: Benton is suing Clark County for emotional distress for reorganizing him out of a political job that was created especially for him. He’s a melting snowflake, too.

    “Benton ingratiated himself with Trump by leading his 2016 campaign in Washington state at a time when many elected Republicans were shunning the New York developer and reality TV star.”

    For whatever that was worth; Trump got less than 37% of the vote in Washington, and less than 22% in King County.

    “After the election, Benton was tapped as a senior White House adviser and led a ‘beachhead’ transition team at the Environmental Protection Agency. He exited that role amid media reports he’d annoyed then-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt and his aides by piping up too often with odd comments. The Washington Post reported Pruitt and his aides started freezing Benton out of meetings. Benton … was appointed Selective Service director in April 2017, placed in charge of an agency with a $25 million budget and 125 full-time employees.”

    In other words, he was exiled from an important agency where he blew his opportunity to impress Trump officials to a tiny inconsequential agency where he’s safely out of the way.

    And now he thinks he’s going to be Trump’s chief of staff? Dream on. Don Benton is, always has been, and always will be a joke.

Steady gains in states like AZ, MI, WI, and NC along with changes in population distribution following the 2020 census put NPV within striking distance sooner rather than later.
