Team Donald released a campaign video today. Aside from it being the kind of thing I could slap together in iMovie in an hour and I’ve got access to an AVID and Final Cut so I could do it in 20, they didn’t catch some drop frames and some bad jump cuts before releasing it. Strictly amateur stuff and bad enough that even a non-pro would say, ‘Why was there a couple beats of black there?’ and ‘Why are his lips saying words that are different from what his voice is saying?’
But they also used some music. Some copyrighted music. You can pay ASCAP a flat fee and use pretty much anything you want in a ‘live’ room situation. But that doesn’t fly with using under prerecorded video and releasing it for ‘broadcast’ (Where in this case broadcast includes streaming on the inter webs). That’s copyright infringement unless you pay the rights holder and get permission.
So that fancy video was up for about an hour before the composer of ‘The Dark Knight’ score got it taken down and the GOP servers are still hosting ‘This content is no longer available.’ The cease and desist from Warner Brothers will be quite clear on penalties for any future infringement of their intellectual property too.
