In fairness, which honestly no child molesting, white nationalist traitor deserves, the political and legal norms surrounding investigations into Presidential corruption have been sliding in this direction for many years. At least as far back as Iran-Contra we saw this. And elements of it were certainly present during the Clinton years.
I’d like to see us get back to a set of legal norms that put the people and their interests ahead of the elected officials. But at least where the White House is concerned we have a long way to go. Legal fictions floated in the decades following Watergate are partly to blame. These preposterous notions of the “unitary executive” that place the Presidency outside the rule of law for the sake of “national security” or “balance of powers” are bullshit. In some ways we’ve been struggling with this since the beginning.
But it’s gotten worse in recent decades because Congress is full-time sucking cock for money now. And that makes incumbents so fearful of special interests that they’d much rather punt the hard choices to the other branches.
Sure, Trump is far worse in some ways than anyone imagined. Particularly now that he’s openly trading the office for private deals. But it’s been sliding in this direction for a long time. Only Congress can fix that. And for all their history of shrieking and pearl clutching it does not appear that Republican voters have any stomach for it at all. In fact, they prefer it this way. They want an empowered, strong-father presence in charge at beyond our reach. But only so long as it’s a “he”, he is “European”, and he puts “Europeans” first.
