The basic problem for Schultz is essentially confirmation bias in the extreme. He’s very wealthy. Very successful. Everyone he meets seems to like him. So he assumes that most people are like him. In particular that they agree with his political views.
He’s calling them “the silent majority” because he doesn’t hear those views reflected in the political policy narratives of most politicians and the two major parties. So they must be “silent”. And they must be the “majority” because as far as he’s concerned most people agree with him. They always say so.
He’s an idiot.
With almost no exceptions the snapshot studies of actual voters immediately following the 2016 Presidential election reveal an electorate completely the opposite of what Schultz describes.
For example, The Democracy Fund Voter Survey of 2016 shows both parties attracting a reasonably wide distribution of policy preferences among voters. And Schultz is perhaps correct in that neither of the two parties reflects his stated preference for liberal social policy combined with conservative economic policy. But that’s because, unlike Schultz, they are not an idiot.
What Schultz would describe as his magic secret sauce for WINNING! would in fact be guaranteed to lose. Figure 2 from the report, a histogram with economic and social policy dimensions on opposing axes (using conventional left-right orientation), shows both party’s voters distributed across three of the four quadrants.
Republican voters are centered along the axis of economic policy with scattering to the left, and tightly to the right side of the social policy axis. While Democratic voters are clustered to the left of both axes with some scattering across the social divide. Most striking is the empty fourth quadrant – left of center on social policy and right of center on economic policy. It is almost completely devoid of actual voters.
The Holy Grail of “socially liberal and economically conservative” politics so revered by corporate titans, Davos intellectuals, and newspaper editors is pure distilled, and unadulterated bullshit ground to a fine powder and snorted daily by all the best people right before heading to Hot Yoga. It’s a way to sound smart at certain dinner parties. And an even better way to piss away a vast pile of money on a political campaign.
That certainly leaves him with a massive messaging deficit when it comes to earning actual votes. But I have little doubt his team of consultants can raise tons of money off it. And media editors will eat that shit up with a spoon directly out of his asshole. It’s probably a fine way for him to sell his book too. Which will at least spare him that humiliation.
