Drinking Liberally — Seattle

by Darryl — Tuesday, 3/23/10, 5:30 pm

DLBottle

The U.S. has shaken its last vestige of being a lesser-developed nation and has joined the civilized world. This calls for a toast…a toast to our health. So join us tonight for a celebratory evening of politics under the influence at the Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally. We meet at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E. beginning at about 8:00 pm. Stop by even earlier and enjoy some dinner.

It is fucking BIG!

Not in Seattle? There is a good chance you live near one of the 343 other chapters of Drinking Liberally.

That was the last idiot you voted for twice who charged two wars and a new entitlement program on the credit card..

To keep the country out of depression from right wing misrule, we’ve been running the printing presses.

Some idiots say that will result in inflation but they forget that inflation is too much money chasing too few goods.. And where has the money gone?

Not to people who will spend it to bid up the prices of commodities and wages..

@3 Thankew for your sympathy, I have a viral infection that’s resisting antibiotics, but my veterinarian thinks I’ll live.

On the other, I don’t recall seeing you post complaints about Bush borrowing a trillion dollars from China to give tax cuts to billionaires — you seem to have a double standard.

This entire health care bill will cost less than Bush’s recreational war in Iraq, but never mind, health care for hardworking Americans isn’t nearly as important as killing Iraqi men, women, and children (100,000 so far and counting).

Virtually all the punditry says the GOP lawsuit is going nowhere and is nothing but posturing. See, e.g.:

“The White House says it isn’t worried … and many legal experts agree the effort is futile. … Robert Sedler, a constitutional law professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, said[,] ‘This is pure, pure political posturing ….’ Bruce Jacob, a constitutional law professor at Stetson University in Florida, said the suit seems like a political ploy and is unlikely to succeed. ‘The federal government certainly can compel people to pay taxes, can compel people to join the Army,’ he said.”

The lawsuit calls this an “unprecedented encroachment on the liberty of individuals.” It states the Constitution doesn’t authorize such a mandate, the proposed tax penalty is unlawful and is an “unprecedented encroachment on the sovereignty of the states.”

“The truth is this is a Republican idea,” said Linda Quick, president of the South Florida Hospital and Healthcare Association. She said she first heard the concept of the “individual mandate” in a Miami speech in the early 1990s by Sen. John McCain, a conservative Republican from Arizona, to counter the “Hillarycare” the Clintons were proposing.

McCain did not embrace the concept during his 2008 election campaign, but other leading Republicans did, including Tommy Thompson, secretary of Health and Human Services under President George W. Bush.

  17. 17

    Michael spews:

    Tuesday, 3/23/10 at 10:46 pm

Among the other Republicans who had embraced the idea was Mitt Romney, who as governor of Massachusetts crafted a huge reform by requiring almost all citizens to have coverage.
“Some of my libertarian friends balk at what looks like an individual mandate,” Romney wrote in The Wall Street Journal in 2006. “But remember, someone has to pay for the health care that must, by law, be provided: Either the individual pays or the taxpayers pay. A free ride on government is not libertarian.”
Romney was referring to the federal law that requires everyone to be treated in emergency rooms, regardless of their ability to pay.

    Rabbit,

I’ve repeatedly said that Bush made many fiscal mistakes. The costly, stupid and Orwellian named ‘War on Terror,’ Iraq war and Bank Bailouts to name a few.

The pundits can talk. The courts will decide. I’m no attorney, but the spirit of the Constitution matters. It seems to me that men who fought over minimal taxation and intrusion into their lives and took on the worlds largest power in doing so would look askance at this massive intrusion, though.

Hope the vet takes good care of you.

If Obam-Mao doesn’t get this poll number into low negative single-digits after passing & signing Obam-MaoCare…he has failed to connect.
Not only is it not low single-digits….it’s not even single-digits!

    Wednesday, March 24, 2010

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 31% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-two percent (42%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -11

Obam-Mao’s “slight disappointing Bounce” is only from Democrats. Unaffiliateds remain highly negative.

    Spin this anyway you want.
Rely on the inaccurate Gallup which was taken immediately after when naturally you get a bounce.
The more questions about Constitutionality abd the details about the Bill itself, the worse it gets.

If You Like the Health Plan You Have, You Can Keep It. President Obama promised that Americans who like their health care plan would be able to keep it. However, the Congressional Budget Office has said that millions of people will lose their current coverage under The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Unfortunately, for many Americans, the reconciliation bill is even worse news, as it made changes to some grandfathering provisions. The changes to grandfathering provisions would mean that individuals with guaranteed renewable plans in the individual market will NOT be able to keep their current coverage at the current price, but would immediately be issued a new policy and charged more. This amendment strikes changes to grandfathered plans, so Americans who like the health care they have actually can keep it. Click here to view amendment.

    8. Exempt Class I Medical Devices from New Taxation. Taxing latex gloves and band-aids is not health reform and only increases the cost of health care for patients. This amendment would exempt all Class I medical devices – such as band-aids, wheelchairs, hospital beds, and surgical gowns – from new federal taxation. Click here to view amendment.

Actually, our revolutionary fore-fathers fought for the right to have their OWN elected representatives make laws which govern them, rather than a parliment across the ocean in which they aren’t allowed any representation.

In contrast, the current Republican efforts are to convince a court to NULLIFY the leglislation adopted by a convincing majority of Congress, consisting of representatives lawfully elected by Americans of every color, income class, and religion (with residents of Washington D.C. being the notable exception).
