Please join us this evening as the Seattle Chapter of Drinking Liberally meets for an evening of friends, fellowship, fine arts, and…mocking the hell out of the lunatic fringe that the right wing has self-lobotomized itself into. Oh…and the fragrant beverage of your choice.
We meet every Tuesday at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern, 2409 10th Ave E, Seattle. You’ll find us in the small room at the back of the tavern beginning about 8pm.
Can’t make it to Seattle? Check out one of the 239 chapters of Living Liberally, including 23 in Washington state, five in Oregon and three in Idaho. Find, or go out and start, a chapter near you.

You can NEVER trust businesses not to cut corners in their pursuit of profit maximization. Private companies, like car drivers, simply aren’t capable of self-policing. Traffic flows smoothly, and casualties are minimized, because we have traffic laws and cops to enforce them. For the same reason, we need government oversight of private businesses.
“A scandal has erupted beyond company borders in Japan over false data supplied by Kobe Steel over the strength and durability of its products used in some mission-critical applications indeed — in cars, aircraft and perhaps a rocket. … The falsification was intended to make metals look like they met clients’ quality standards. … Kobe Steel has acknowledged shipping products (which include copper and aluminum products) to more than 200 customers but didn’t disclose their names.”
Those 200 companies likely included some Boeing suppliers.

It’s obvious you are a piece of shit. But you get no cover from anyone, anywhere now. Whether or not Hollywood investors ever see fit to let you make decisions with their money ever again is doubtful. But you’ll get absolutely nobody apologizing or defending you. Nobody will try to soften your fall or call for more time to “gather all the facts”. No indemnification. No protection. Rather than shy away from your story, the media and particularly the entertainment media will go on a shark feeding frenzy to uncover every scintilla of dirt and publish it instantly. No excuses will be offered on your behalf. Nobody will attempt to “mansplain” or “whitesplain” your abuses in a more flattering light. No passing it off as “harmless”. Nobody will call you a “very fine person”. And certainly nobody will grant you a pardon.
Right about now you wish you were a Republican.

I’m making another $2500 in the stock market today. Yawn. (Picks teeth.) Funny, I don’t see Doctor Dumbfuck complaining about a “job” that pays over $300/hr. and doesn’t require me to show up or do any work. His hatred of high wages seems selective. It appears to apply only to poor people making $15/hr. or less. (And if you’re making $15/hr. in Seattle, you’re poor.)
Sometimes I think Doctor Dumbfuck would prefer to have his restaurant meals prepared and served by slaves. Certainly, he feels very strongly about restaurant workers being paid more than $7.25/hr. He likes robots because they don’t have to be paid at all. I don’t think it’s all about money, because anyone who can afford a hobby horse farm can also afford to pay another 25 or 50 cents for a cheeseburger.
I think it’s about domination. I think he’s a White Nationalist who resents paying restaurant workers to wait on him because they’re minorities. I think he feels minorities should be required to kiss his ass.
Which brings me to the subject of reincarnation. Specifically, where did this come from? It had to come from a past life. I think he was once a whip-wielding southern slaveowner who just can’t adjust to abolition in his subsequent lives.
I would guess he was a doctor back then, too. Before they had anesthetics or infection control. He may have been one of the medics who sawed limbs off screaming patients at Shiloh, Antietam, and Gettysburg. And maybe in WW1, too, in one of his subsequent lives. He strikes me as the type of doctor who would enjoy that sort of thing.
I hope he doesn’t take this personally. I admit it’s speculative. I’m just trying to make sense of his HA comments.

In other news, Michigan has begun to reform its teacher pension system:
“The new law takes measures to prevent and mitigate new unfunded liabilities while keeping promises to retirees. Teachers and school staff hired after February 2018 will be auto-enrolled in a defined contribution plan with a 10 percent combined contribution rate. Alternatively, participants can opt into a “hybrid” plan that uses a more realistic 6 percent assumed rate of return, short amortization schedules and equal cost-sharing between employees and employers. Plus, if hybrid plans slip below 85 percent of obligations, no new members can enroll.”
“Reason Report,” Summer 2017, Issue No. 152 (page 1)
Well, at least one state is trying to do something about unfunded liabilities. Washington is in fairly good shape, while Illinois and California are in serious trouble. It’s not just limited to blue states, either: South Carolina has a very serious problem with unfunded liabilities related to public employee pensions.
What the means, in the long run, is younger workers will have come to the realization that pensions, public or private, are fading away. What is left is defined contribution plans such as the 401k or an IRA. That’s just the way it’s going, just like people having land lines in their homes are dwindling. People who are paying attention will take actions accordingly to provide for their own retirements.

@20 @22 General George Patton would never have made such a statement and he would have chewed you up one side and down the other, and maybe used his pistols he took off a dead Mexican General. He would have called the button counting accountant you are. He would tell you the US Government has an obligation to the men he led to fulfill it’s promises to the troops.
Why don’t you go to Niger and explain your concept to the troops there. Or is your goal to make sure there are no troops, or we have to do a military draft. Even the Roman’s gave a retirement to the men who were recruited (drafted) if they survived their military service.
States have a responsibility to state workers already working for them, and the rules should not be changed to advantage the state. Some states have over promised. Others suffer from politicians willingness to make promises they are unwilling to pay for, or make sweetheart deals with large corporations. Or have retirement funds they put no funds into year after year. Nor are most politicians willing to pay state employees and teachers what they should be paid, and are paid in other nations, So that means states reneging on their obligations means unjust enrichment for the state, and a shirking of responsibility Still that is what states and politicians do. It is the way of the state. Particularly in times when political will is lacking. And fear has gotten it’s way into the system, and politicians are fearful of fear itself.

Roger Rabbit spews:
@18 “What is left is defined contribution plans such as the 401k or an IRA.”
And the stock market. The problem with most 401ks is the money goes into mutual funds. Mutual funds suck. They exist solely to make fund managers wealthy. IRAs are okay if self-managed, and if you don’t put all the money in mutual funds or ETFs, otherwise they suck too. People don’t have to know anything about investing to invest in stocks successfully. Just buy a few of the Dow 30, don’t sell them, and reinvest the dividends. Thirty years from now you should be in great shape.
Let’s face it, the consumer economy is history, because in the future workers will have to provide their own job training, health insurance, and retirement. They should negotiate higher salaries with employers to offset the subtraction of these benefits from their compensation packages. And the need to self-fund these things necessarily means much, much less discretionary spending. Goodbye new cars every 3 years, home tradeups, vacation homes, boats and RVs, wine collections. The middle class can’t afford that stuff anymore. (They really never could.) Instead of being 70% of the economy, consumer spending will more likely be 50% or 55%. Or maybe 45%. Economic growth based on consumer spending will soon be a thing of the past. Think 1% to 2% growth a year for the next 1,000 years.

Those things were for our generation. And in their time they were appropriate. But the times have changed and those things are no longer appropriate. Financial security is a fine thing. It’s time to look at ourselves and the overseas empire. Over 900 bases overseas? Really? Let’s unwind the empire.
Take Korea – it’s time for the South Koreans to field their own nuclear capability. Also, the Japanese need to develop a nuclear capability.
If you start at the North Pole and draw a line paralleling the eastern edge of the Ural Mountains, South towards the Equator, thence East to the International Date Line, thence North to the North Pole, the triangle described therein is the area the Chinese believe they have the right to dominate and control. That means enslaving all of the Korean Peninsula, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Burma and everyone else in the triangle. As for the Japanese, the Chinese would like to invade, kill all the men, make sex slaves out of the women and girls, and enslave any young boys after they are neutered by Chinese blades. The Chinese (and the Koreans and Vietnamese) hate the Japanese with a passion. Only China has the wherewithall to actually get some revenge on Japan, and they’d dearly love to do just that. (The triangle encompasses a big part of Russia, too, but the Chinese aren’t quite ready to challenge the Russians for the turf. Maybe in a century or two the Chinese will act against the Russians, but that’s a long shot at best.)
If the US wants to watch out for South Korea and Japan, then it’s time for those nations to have their own nuclear offensive and defensive capabilities against China. We just need to get out of the way and China will checked in its hegemony by South Korea and Japan. That means leaving the Korean Peninsula for good.
It’s time for the US to get out of the Middle East, too. Israel can take care of Israel, and they are not our friends. Why else would the Israeli Air force knowingly attack a US Navy ship on June 8, 1967 and later send Jonathan Pollard to spy on us? Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq are quagmires. Get out now and let the chips fall where they may. The neighborhood will sort out its own problems.
Thomas Jefferson spews:
Who is responsible for a secure retirement? The employee? The employer? The government?
The answer is all can do their part. The employee needs to participate in the retirement plan available. The employer should contribute something, too. The government administers Social Security but needs better returns. Why isn’t the rest of the government paying the appropriate interest rate for the privilege of borrowing from the Social Security Trust Fund.
If the military industrial complex wants to fund invasions and weapons systems by borrowing from Social Security, then can damn well pay the appropriate rate of return to ensure Social Security stays solvent. Why should the war mongers get a break on the cost of capital?
