DLBottleWashington’s primary election results have been certified, and we are on the way to November. Please join us tonight for political talk and electoral chat at the Seattle Chapter of Drinking liberally. All are welcomed—no extreme vetting involved.

We meet tonight and every Tuesday at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern, 2409 10th Ave E, Seattle. You’ll find us in the small room at the back of the tavern. We start at 8:00pm.





Can’t make it to Seattle tonight? Check out one of the other DL meetings this week. Tonight, the Tri-Cities chapter meets. On Wednesday, the Burien and the North Spokane chapters meet. The Kent and Woodinville chapters meet on Thursday.

    I strongly disagree. But I’m not surprised to see an editorial board made up of “journalists” saying this.
    Any administration, irrespective of political party or security policy, has a paramount duty to protect and preserve the lives of its citizens in danger abroad. While the duty to “transparency” is important, it is not as important as protecting the lives of U.S. citizens. There is always some real risk that political opponents either at home or abroad might exploit knowledge of negotiating strategy for purely political purposes. That kind of political exploitation is certain to limit negotiating strategy in the future. So the administration had the highest duty to consider the fate of future citizens facing detention under similar circumstances.
    When your son or daughter is illegally detained abroad, you don’t want our President, the Department of State, or the National Security Council engaging in a political calculation at your child’s expense. Responsible leaders and negotiators don’t want to take negotiating options off the table for those kinds of reasons. So it was more than reasonable for the administration to be opaque about this negotiation in deference to similar future negotiations.
    The political exploitation of this by partisan shitbags is nothing short of treason. The next time a President is faced with negotiating the release of a U.S. citizen illegally detained abroad they will have no choice but to limit their negotiating response to consider how asshole Republicans might exploit it for political gain.

    @6 Only what you are inferring is not the primary goal of the United States. If your child or loved one is seized illegally by certain states you are totally fucked. The United States will not negotiate or pay for their release. We could go to war like we did with the Barbary pirates, but if your child or loved one goes certain places and is held it’s not in the United States interests to negotiate release. Yes it will work to get a red cross rep in there to check on the person, but you are SOL. Whether they are held or executed nothing the US government is going to do for you, except go to war and your child or loved being a reason for a war of justice. They will point out that there is a warning to all US travelers to please not to go to that country.

    The United States most certainly does negotiate with sovereign states to obtain the release of detained U.S. citizens. We all know that. It is no secret. We’ve been doing it since Jefferson who worked through Spanish intermediaries in one of the first examples of “shuttle diplomacy”. It has been part of nightly news casts for as long as there has been television.
    Peppering your bullshit with dramatic language describing threats and dire consequences is just more of the same blood drunk rhetorical smoke being employed by your incompetent Republican nominee right now. Sure it’s a dangerous world sometimes. But that doesn’t me we must, or should go to war at every single provocation, however much you might enjoy it. People die in wars. Some of them are U.S. citizens.
    The President did the right thing by using available leverage in negotiating the release of these citizens. The President did the right thing by preserving the confidential details of those negotiations in order to preserve options for the future. Four U.S. citizens being held by Iran under trumped up criminal charges were released unharmed. In “exchange” a desperately cash starved Iranian government got back $400 million dollars that already belonged to them. No troops were deployed. No “cool” weapons were employed. No Naval Aviators had to negotiate dangerous landings on rain slicked pitching steel decks in utter darkness and near zero visibility. Boo fucking hoo.

    If the money was Iran’s send it back. We have an agreement we abide by it. We expect the Iranian’s to uphold their part. Congress may be a wee bit upset because we have these called laws that say if you are dumbfuck American and go to certain countries and get kidnapped you are on your own. Congress may also get upset because they hold the purse strings. Of course we could do the Russian response to other countries seizing our citizens by seizing theirs or family members only we have these things called laws.
    By the way Jefferson also did diplomacy with the USS Constitution that fired its guns and marines went ashore in Tripoli. In fact it was Jefferson that fully implemented the previous administrations refusal to pay ransom to the Barbary pirates that has been a cornerstone of American diplomacy. To put it another way you are either ignorant or a liar. Maybe both.
    Or maybe you need to go talk to families with loved one held by ISIS and talk to them about all the help they are getting from Uncle Sam. Getting their loved ones back alive is not the US’s number one priority. Accidently bombing and killing ISIS captives has happened, but that is the Obama’s administrations solution. Send in the drones, while the Israelis will put their people on the line if they get the intel their citizens are being held at location X.

    @56 I’m actually rather independent, (a bit progressive as I think government works, size should be what works) and I will your bullshit and I will call out others bullshit on here. I do wish occassionally they would talk a bit more about local and state stuff and come up with something to tweak our political elite from to time.
    I’m not pleased with either major party candidate and I will not for either of them. I think we independents should vote for Stein or the libertarian just to let both major parties know are displeased, and have no problem with showing plenty of our current office holders of both parties the door.
    They are a bit upset with me for saying you should on the list if for no other reason than it’s not good when you are solely in your own little bubble. From time to time you saw something interesting. Something that deserves some discussion rather than their preference of ignoring it or sweeping it under the door.
    They also seem reluctant to recall there are and can be Progressive Republicans. That there are some skeletons like racism in the progressive closet. It has a dark side such as that American experiment called Prohibition. Folks of a similar religious bent like yours and Progressives got together on that one.
