Being a careful lawyer, and the son of a Canadian evangelical preacher, Cruz knows the rules, and knows how to manipulate the rules to his benefit. So when he fucked Carson out of Iowa delegates by publicizing huge lies about Carson, he knew that the circumstances gave him plausible deniability. And he knew that the Carson moral rule book would require Carson to forgive him for it. Game. Set. Match. Carson suffered a huge opening round setback and was destined to be pushed out by Cruz lying. The evangelical support has proved crucial to Cruz, something he knew from the beginning. So he knew he had to eliminate Carson. And he wan’t above lying in order to do it. Lying even to Carson’s fool face.
The true believer Carson plays by the rules and loses. While Cruz uses the rules to cheat and wins. The marks put up with it because ultimately they have no choice. Republicans like Cruz use the suckers for votes, money, and zealous support. And in return for that, Republicans nourish and give sanction to their hatred. The marks need their hatred more than they need their stupid rules.

Far from driving turnout, these ideas and the style of campaigning are driving large numbers of likely Republican voters to walk away, at least for the time being.
A somewhat closer comparison might be to Wallace’s Presidential campaigns. Destined to go nowhere, the failure of these campaigns managed to change the Democratic party forever by driving the southern segregationist wing out of the party, and putting those voters in play for the Republicans. Had Wallace prevailed in his efforts (as Trump/Cruz are prevailing today) it might have deprived Republicans of their “southern strategy”, but it would have destroyed the Democratic party.
Now the descendants of those segragationist voters, inspired by Dildonistas, Teahadists, Trump, Cruz, and AM radio bigots are driving conservative intellectuals out of the Republican party. A big difference however is that it isn’t at all clear that Democrats want or need conservative intellectuals. Though it is amusing to see some of them like the Brooks twins (David, Arthur C.) attempting the sale. They might have seen it all coming years ago. But they were probably too busy justifying things like Justice Department religious purges, compulsory prayer meetings, and torture memos.
