can we just be clear about this first:
It is enormously inaccurate to characterize money wire transfers as originating from “illegals” or that our nation’s agricultural production entirely depends on those you call “illegals”. Yes, many seasonal farm laborers are not U.S. citizens. But they carry legal work visas. And they depend upon wire transfers to support their families in their country of origin (often not Mexico, by the way). So we aren’t necessarily talking about “Mexico”. We probably aren’t talking about “lettuce”. And we almost certainly aren’t talking about “illegals”.
Legal guest workers who depend upon money wires to support their families come from hundreds of different countries and can be found in thousands of different industries. They are often “unbanked”, not because they are undocumented, but because most U.S. banks have fucked them over at some point. It’s often easier and cheaper in the long run for these folks to simply take cash to a Western Union office and wire funds home. Take away wire transfers and they’ll simply find another way – Google wallet, PayPal, etc.
