Indeed, from a legal perspective, it is hard to believe anyone who still self-identifies with that party is legally competent. Roger, you practiced law, so you know that taking money from someone who is legally incompetent and unprotected by a court-appointed guardian is wrong. So, how do you justify taking money from Republicans? Do you think that taking money from Cynical or Puddy would be right, even if they told you to do so?

    A white supremacist has confessed to Friday night’s cold-blooded murder of a Houston-area convenience store owner, police say.

    Naushad Virani, 50, was shot during a robbery. Stevie “Bubba” Walder Jr., 31, is facing capital murder charges.

    Walder told police he surrendered instead of shooting the arresting officers because they were white.

    Walder is described as 6-foot-2, about 250 lbs., with a shaved head and Nazi SS tatoo on his neck, and driving a Dodge pickup with “a Republican Party sticker on the back window.”

    How can it be that British authorities denied Abdulmutallab’s request for a visa renewal — without triggering a comparable review by U.S. officials? Was the United States not informed or did U.S. authorities simply not take action in response? Either there is a continuing problem of intergovernmental communication or a continuing problem of bureaucratic lassitude. How can it be that an individual passenger (a) traveling from Nigeria, with its known security lapses, (b) not checking luggage and (c) purchasing a ticket with cash was not singled out for additional screening? What did he have to do — wear a sign saying, “You might want to check my underwear”?

Making the rounds of Sunday talk shows, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs resisted every effort to get him to acknowledge that something had gone seriously wrong.

    The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 25% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-one percent (41%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -16.

    Confidence in the War on Terror has fallen following the Christmas Day airline attack. For the first time since October 2007, the number who believe the terrorists are winning has reached 30%. Just 36% believe the U.S. and its allies are winning. Seventy-eight percent (78%) say it’s at least somewhat likely that the proposed health care reform legislation will cost more than projected. Eighty-one percent (81%) also believe passage of the legislation is at least somewhat likely to lead to higher middle class taxes and 68% believe it will increase the federal budget deficit.

    Why would anyone “rally around” this failure??

    U.S. taking majority ownership of GMAC The federal government said Wednesday it will take majority control of the troubled auto lender GMAC, providing another $3.8 billion in aid to the company, which has been unable to raise from private investors the money it needs to staunch its losses.     The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows that 24% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President.     The good news for Senator Ben Nelson is that he doesn’t have to face Nebraska voters until 2012. If Governor Dave Heineman challenges Nelson for the Senate job, a new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows the Republican would get 61% of the vote while Nelson would get just 30%. Nelson was reelected to a second Senate term in 2006 with 64% of the vote.

    Nelson’s health care vote is clearly dragging his numbers down. Just 17% of Nebraska voters approve of the deal their senator made on Medicaid in exchange for his vote in support of the plan. Overall, 64% oppose the health care legislation, including 53% who are Strongly Opposed. In Nebraska, opposition is even stronger than it is nationally. Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters in the state believe that passage of the legislation will hurt the quality of care, and 62% say it will raise costs.
