DLBottleThe Seattle Chapter of Drinking Liberally meets tonight, and every Tuesday evening, for some political discussion over an ice cold drink.

We meet at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern, 2409 10th Ave E, Seattle. The starting time is 8:00 pm, but some folks show up before that for dinner. We’re in the back room.



Can’t make it to Seattle? Check out another Washington state chapter of Drinking Liberally over the next week. The Tri-Cities and Shelton chapters also meet this Tuesday. The Lakewood and South Seattle chapters meet this Wednesday. And on Thursday, the Spokane and Tacoma chapters meet.

With 202 chapters of Living Liberally, including eighteen in Washington state, three in Oregon and three in Idaho, chances are excellent there’s a chapter meeting somewhere near you.

    It’s Scientifically Official: Conservatives Have Caveman Brains

    New scientific research confirms what liberals have long suspected: Conservatives have different brains from us.

    “[A] paper by John Hibbing of the University of Nebraska and his colleagues [in the Journal of Brain and Behaviorial Sciences] argu[es] that political conservatives have a ‘negativity bias,’ meaning that they are physiologically more attuned to negative … stimuli in their environments. … Hibbing et al. marshall a large body of evidence, including their own experiments using eye trackers and other devices to measure the involuntary responses of political partisans to different types of images. One finding? That conservatives respond much more rapidly to threatening and aversive stimuli …. In other words, the conservative ideology, … centered on a strong military, tough law enforcement, resistance to immigration, [and] widespread availability of guns, would seem to be well tailored for an underlying, threat-oriented biology. The authors … speculate … this ultimately reflects an evolutionary imperative. ‘One possibility,’ they write, ‘is that a strong negativity bias was extremely useful in the Pleistocene,’ when it would have been super helpful in preventing you from getting killed.”

    I’m curious why evolution hasn’t selectively bred conservatives into extinction yet. I suppose you could still have an extant population of Neanderthals if someone had put some of them in a zoo a million years ago and prevented them from interbreeding with more modern primates. Maybe that’s what actually happened. It sure looks that way, because the Republican mentality is stuck in 1,000,000 B.C.

    The California Republican said a federal court had “already rejected” the notion senior presidential advisers were exempt from congressional subpoena. He pointed to a 2008 ruling in which a federal court ruled that Bush advisers Harriet Miers and Josh Bolton must obey congressional subpoenas.

    “Flouting a federal judge’s opinion about our system of checks and balances is yet another attack on our Nation’s Constitution by this President,” Issa said.

    A prominent law professor and avowed supporter of the Obama White House will tell the House on Wednesday that the president has created one of the biggest constitutional crises in the country’s history and will endorse House Republicans’ effort to sue to rein him in.

    Jonathan Turley, a professor at George Washington University, will say President Obama is trampling the founders’ vision for the country in his push to circumvent Congress, and he will demand Republicans and Democrats alike forget their party labels to unify against this White House’s power grab.
