I’m not the only one who thinks Paul Ryan has thrown down a gauntlet instead of offering a way out of the budget impasse.
“If you boiled down the media’s reaction to Paul Ryan’s budget to a three-letter phrase, it would be: WTF? Most commentators and reporters are flummoxed that the new budget, released this morning, makes no concession to the fact that Republicans just ran a presidential campaign on these very ideas and were soundly defeated.”
Meanwhile, House conservatives are upset, too, because the latest iteration of The Ryan Budget fails to repeal the fiscal cliff tax increases. Bottom line: despite campaigning and losing on their “principles” last year, the hard-right is doubling down and insisting on an even more rightwing budget than voters rejected. This truly is a “WTF?” moment.

Now I understand that you’re not Google. They definitely sit between readers and content makers, extracting the most value.
I’m still undecided if I favor charging for linking or not. Right now I’m just trying to understand the side of the content creators. My primary motivation, like so many other people, is trying to figure out how to cover the costs of original reporting (journalism).

fewer American households own guns than ever before,
Not accurate as stated, I don’t think. A smaller percentage of American households own guns, compared with previous polls.
The number of households is growing, however.
Since guns are probably ‘flying off the shelves’ at a greater pace than they are being destroyed or sold by our government to Mexican drug cartels, the absolute number of guns in this country is very likely increasing, and the absolute number of households in which they are stored is very likely increasing as well.
Might seem like a small point, but if someone such as yourself, supposedly highly educated, militarily trained, a barrister, and a judge, is to weigh in as you do, that someone should at least try to be credible about it.

I’m surprised they’re not sniping at the Obama Recovery. We have two economies in this country, and Obama’s policies are fostering this divide: The rich are doing fine (stock market’s up, spending by affluent consumers is up), the middle class is going nowhere (falling unemployment numbers mask the fact good jobs are being replaced by low-wage and part-time jobs). The middle is slowly reducing debt, but only by means of foreclosure and bankruptcy, there’s no repayment going on and the savings rate is negative. Meanwhile, the Fed has pumped $3 trillion of new money into the financial system, but it all ended up on bank balance sheets or in the stock market (banks and shareholders are doing great); none has trickled down to small businesses or households. The little guy running a dry cleaners or used bookstore still can’t borrow. America’s economic system isn’t working for the vast majority of Americans. Hey, this isn’t an endorsement of Obama’s rivals; the GOP’s policies are far worse for the little guys. Which is why Obama and Bernanke are able to get away with it.

“It’s the only time you used “MMA” in a comment.”
You do realize, Steve, that it was used by a witness as well, right?
However, evidence shows an eyewitness already described Trayvon Martin as raining blows down on George Zimmermnan “MMA style.”
Ragan said if more evidence came to light to support Martin has experience with MMA fighting, the case dynamics would dramatically change.
“If I am Mark O’Mara, I have my investigators out doing whatever I can do to find if Trayvon Martin had any MMA training, because if he did, then I can invalidate the opinions to charge period,” Ragan said.
http://cfnews13.com/content/ne.....n_leg.html
Apparently some of the social media that the prosecution and Martin’s family unsuccessfully sought to keep from the defense pertains to a big interest Martin had in MMA.
Nelson authorized his request to subpoena Trayvon’s Twitter and Facebook posts. In self-defense cases, she said, if there’s evidence that a victim had a violent past, it could be relevant.
The accounts were de-activated long ago, O’Mara said, but he believes they will reveal “videos out there that suggest he (Trayvon) involved himself in MMA fighting.”
That’s important because one eye-witness told investigators that he saw Trayvon on top of Zimmerman, straddling him “MMA-style,” a reference to mixed-martial arts fighting, a combination of boxing, wrestling and martial arts.

Pretty fucking stupid of your leaders, don’t you think, Bob? @34 “Has it occurred to you that maybe Martin deserved a gunshot by someone in genuine fear for his life?”
Yes, that did occur to me, I’ve given it quite a bit of thought, and my answer is:
1. Martin did not deserve to get shot.
2. Until Zimmerman came along, Martin was a law-abiding citizen, in a place where he had a right to be, doing what he had a right to do, and had a legal and moral right to not be bothered by some jerk playing self-appointed vigilante.
3. Zimmerman instigated the confrontation; and that makes him, not Martin, the aggressor.
4. Zimmerman disobeyed the police dispatcher’s explicit instructions, an innocent person died as a direct result, and that makes Zimmerman a murderer.

Whereas jumping to the conclusion that Zimmerman is guilty of murder without hearing all of the evidence isn’t racist? After all, a lot of you white guys want that Hispanic dude locked up for manslaughter @ 61 or worse. Couldn’t I say that points to racism were I of a mind to do so?
Gee, Steve. I thought it would only point to conclusion-jumping.

Pope Francis I, 76, was the son of an Italian railway worker. He was the runner-up in the last conclave, so he wasn’t such a long shot after all. Strange. The other night I was thinking about this conclave (even though I’m not Catholic, it affects the whole world), and I thought about St. Francis of Assisi — what if they had elected him pope? Given Francis I’s age and health, though, this probably won’t be a real long papacy.

“Choosing the name Francis is powerful and ground-breaking, CNN Vatican expert John Allen says. As already noted, this is the first Pope Francis. The name parallels one of the most venerated figures in the Roman Catholic Church, St. Francis of Assisi. Allen described the name of Pope Francis as ‘the most stunning’ choice and ‘precedent shattering.’ ‘There are cornerstone figures in Catholicism’ such as St. Francis, Allen said. Figures of such stature as St. Francis seem ‘irrepeatable – that there can be only one Francis,’ Allen added.”

It didn’t matter that we both saw Marvin as closeted wingnut and we were tweaking him. It was very, very wrong for us to go there.
I see Lib Sci’s comment as being quite tame to what GBS and I blurted out that one unfortunate day. That’s how I felt about what I did. “Abortion and euthanasia
“Cardinal Bergoglio has invited his clergy and laity to oppose both abortion and euthanasia.
“Homosexuality
“He has affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, though he teaches the importance of respecting individuals who are gay or lesbian. He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage, calling it a ‘real and dire anthropological throwback’. In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: ‘Let’s not be naive, we’re not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.’ He has also insisted that adoption by gay and lesbian people is a form of discrimination against children. This position received a rebuke from Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who said the church’s tone was reminiscent of ‘medieval times and the Inquisition’.
“Class equality
“During a 48-hour public servant strike in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bergoglio observed the differences between, ‘poor people who are persecuted for demanding work, and rich people who are applauded for fleeing from justice’
“Relations with the Argentine government
“On 15 April 2005, a human rights lawyer filed a criminal complaint against Bergoglio, as superior in the Society of Jesus of Argentina, accusing him of involvement in the kidnapping by the Navy in May 1976 (during the military dictatorship) of two Jesuit priests, whom he, as superior of the Society of Jesus of Argentina in 1976, had asked to leave their pastoral work following conflict within the Society over how to respond to the new military dictatorship, with some priests advocating a violent overthrow. The priests, Orlando Yorio and Francisco Jalics, were found alive five months later, drugged and seminude. Bergoglio’s spokesman flatly denied the allegations. Under Argentine law such accusations can be made on little evidence, to be investigated by a court.”
