So please join us for another evening of politics under the influence at the Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally. We meet at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E. Starting time is 8:00 pm, but a few folks will show up early for dinner.



Can’t make it to Seattle tonight? The Bellingham Chapter also meets at 7:00pm tonight. Tomorrow the Burien chapter meets at 7:00pm. There are 234 chapters of Living Liberally, including thirteen in Washington state and six more in Oregon.

    Charges have been filed against an unlicensed driver and suspected illegal immigrant who allegedly killed a 4-year-old boy in a hit-and-run accident, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
    The newspaper reports that prosecutors in Sonoma County charged 22-year-old Marcos Lopez Garcia with felony hit-and-run, two misdemeanors and vehicular manslaughter, among other charges, in the Thursday death of Christopher “Buddy” Rowe of Santa Rosa.
    Garcia had two prior arrests for driving without a license, according to the newspaper.

    I spent a lovely afternoon hiking the trails at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma and as I was leaving the park I noticed a “retain Erik Hanberg for Metro Parks” sign. Hanburg’s a great guy and I hadn’t realized was on the parks board.

    I bring this up because Erik, like a lot of other younger folks in various leadership positions around Tacoma, got his start and his name out there working at The Grand Cinema. And because Ryan Mellow, who’s now on the Tacoma City council started out on the parks board. Tacoma’s developing a “leadership funnel” for young folks. Spokane has a similar thing with http://www.leadershipspokane.org/ and a variety of local environmental environmental groups.

    I’m wondering if Seattle has similar “leadership funnels?” I’ve noticed that Seattle’s parks board is appointed, not elected. Where would someone in Seattle who wanted to “test the waters” of elected officialdom start?

That might possibly have something to do with all the people the INS picks up who then stay in detention for ages in those new jails Uncle Sam built and then arranged for private contractors to run. (The one at Sea-Tac is operated by a subsidiary of–surprise! Halliburton.

    We all know Obama announced last week that he was issuing an executive order which would supposedly implement Bush’s “Dream Act”, which predictably didn’t set too well with the teabag “patriots”. I’d venture that it won’t really make a lot of difference, the wheels of “justice” will continue to grind as slowly as always, the immigration jails will stay full, and the contractors will continue to cash in.

    Updated numbers for the national debt are just out: It’s now $14,639,000,000,000.

    When Barack Obama took the oath of office twice on Jan. 20, 2009, CBS’ amazing number cruncher Mark Knoller reports, the national debt was $10,626,000,000,000.

    That means the debt that our federal government owes a whole lot of somebodies including China has increased $4,247,000,000,000 in just 945 days. That’s the fastest increase under any president ever.
