Drinking Liberally — Seattle

by Darryl — Tuesday, 7/19/11, 4:00 pm

DLBottle Please join us tonight for drinks, conversation, and dinner at the Seattle Chapter of Drinking liberally.

We meet at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E. Starting time is 8:00 pm, but a few folks show up earlier for dinner.

Last week we had a terrific turn-out for state Rep. Roger Goodman (D-45 LD), who is running for Congress in Washington’s 1st CD, the seat currently held by Rep. Jay Inslee. We also had first-hand reports from folks who attended a public hearing on King County Transit service cuts.

Can’t make it tonight? Drinking Liberally Tacoma meets on Thursday, July 21 at the Hub Restaurant. Starting time is 7:00pm. And with 230 chapters of Living Liberally, including seven chapters in Washington state, chances are good there’s one near you.

By 8pm we should have Wisconsin election results. This isn’t a real important election, it’s a primary to choose the Republican candidates to oppose two of the Democratic state senators facing recall, and a general election for the third Democratic senator facing recall, which he should win easily.

Nikki Haley, the Republican governor of S. Carolina, bragged that she had brought in 10,000 jobs to the state in her first six months in office.

The problem is, as media reports showed, 4,000 jobs were with Wal-Mart (low wages, no benefits), and the great majority of the jobs had already been arranged before she came into office, or were announced but wouldn’t be filled for years to come.

In other words, her stats were meaningless.

But she didn’t apologize, she just blasted the media for their “negative reporting” of her administration.

    Wisconsin Election Results

Early returns contain no surprises, and none of the races are close.

In the first of 9 recall elections, Democratic state senator Dave Hansen is crushing his Republican opponent, 69% – 31%, with 56% of precincts reported.

In northern Wisconsin, a well-funded business owner and Tea Party leader who ran TV ads for weeks is defeating a GOP county board chairman 65% – 35%, with 16% of precincts counted, in a primary to choose the GOP candidate to face Democratic state senator Jim Holperin in the Aug. 16 general election.

In southeast Wisconsin, a Republican attorney is defeating a former sheriff who has run as a Democrat in the past, 60% – 40%, in a primary to choose the GOP candidate to face Democratic state senator Robert Wirch in the Aug. 16 general election.

Last week, primaries were held to choose Democratic candidates challenging the 6 Republican state senators facing recall; that election will be on Aug. 9.

    Another GOP ‘Family Values’ Hypocrite

Here’s an interesting factoid about Kim Simac, the winner of today’s GOP recall primary in northern Wisconsin.

Her website says, “I believe in the preservation of the family and traditional family values, and will fight for legislation to protect them.”

Now get this. Simac filed for divorce against her ex-husband the same day her current husband filed for divorce against his ex-wife, and the cases have consecutive court case numbers.

As a Wisconsin liberal blog put it, “While there’s no telling whether Simac and her current husband walked into the courthouse hand-in-hand to file for divorce from their respective spouses, I can just see that being the case.”

Er, should we call this “spouse swapping?”

What Bipartisanship Hath Wrought: Zilch for Bike-Ped in Senate Bill Outline
by Tanya Snyder on July 19, 2011

The Senate EPW Committee just posted a transportation bill outline on their website, and despite previous assurances by committee chair Barbara Boxer (D-CA), there appears to be no dedicated funding for bicycling and pedestrian programs in the bill.

Which is why we shouldn’t bother to support these fuckers any more. Yes, the Republicans are worse, but these fuckers are bad enough that it’s worth pulling our support and risking getting a 1 term Republican in there. Fuckem’ they’re a bunch of feckless & corrupt, fucking, fuckers.

  8. 8

    Roger Rabbit spews:

    Tuesday, 7/19/11 at 7:00 pm

@7 “No dedicated funding” doesn’t necessarily mean “no funding.” Keep in mind the ranking member of this committee is GOP Sen. James Inhofe, who is against anything that doesn’t spew pollution. He probably thinks pedestrians are communists and walking is a subversive activity that should be outlawed. In the strange and wonderful world of congressional politics it’s necessary to appease, if not pander to, people like him and therefore pedestrians and bicyclists must be rhetorically snubbed. But that doesn’t mean they won’t get theirs. There are always workarounds. Boxer is neither the Devil’s Handmaiden nor a Republican (please forgive the redundancy), so be patient, and give her a chance to fudge the ped/bic funding into the budget. What do you care what the report says, as long as you get the money?

Only two Wisconsin Democratic state senators are still at risk. In District 22, Sen. Robert Wirch won his 2008 election with 67% of the vote. In District 12, Sen. Jim Holperin won his 2008 election with 51% of the vote. It’s pretty obvious where the GOP will put its marbles, but they have a flawed candidate with the vulnerability described in #6 above. She’s also a Teahadist whom independents may be reluctant to voe for. So, it seems likely the Democrats are at risk for, at most, only one of their seats and have a good chance to retain all three.

On the Republican side, at least 2 of the 6 GOP senators facing recall are considered highly vulnerable. Democrats need to win those 2 plus at least 1 more to take control of the state senate. It would be better to win 4 of the 6 seats, in case Holperin loses to Simac.

I really can’t make book on the outcome, because I’m not familiar enough with Wisconsin politics, but I know this is going to be a hard-fought, big-money campaign — it looks like at least $20 million will be spent on those 8 races, which probably works out to something like $100 per vote. There are a lot of angry teachers and public servants out there who will go to the Democratic side. The turnout in today’s GOP primaries was light. So, I think it’s doable, but not a sure thing.

Actually, I’m thinking that the way things are going the roads are going to fall apart and we’ll all be walking or biking, so it’s win, win. At least until you go to the store to by toothpaste and you can’t because the tractor-trailer that was hauling it in lost an axle on I-90.

I’m sick of having to fudge things. That we have to fudge things and do workarounds is as much about the Democrats as it is the Republicans. Put the funding in there loud and proud or go the fuck home.

Here’s a summary of what has happened so far in the Wisconsin legislative recall fracas.

Democrats and Republicans each targeted 8 of the opposing party’s state senators for recall, a total of 16 senators. Democrats filed successful recall petitions against 6 Republicans, while Republicans field successful petitions against 3 Democrats.

Republicans recruited “fake Democrats” to run against all 6 of the Democratic candidates challenging the 6 GOP senators facing recall, in order to turn the July 12 election into a primary and give their party’s candidates an extra month to campaign. All 6 of the “fake Democrats” were defeated, but the Republicans achieved their objective of moving the general election for the 6 GOP senators forward to Aug. 9.

In the 3 Democrat-held senate districts, only 2 were contested primaries; the other was a general election, in which the Democratic incumbent easily held his seat. The winners of the GOP primaries in the other 2 districts will face off against those 2 incumbent Democratic senators on Aug. 16.

Why not discuss how DUMMOCRAPT Businessman Steve Wynn blasts Obummer and his wealth “redistribution plans”?

You know, MGM aside for a moment. Last year we created almost 5,000 jobs and immediately became the target of the administration. Businesses that created jobs, let alone gaming companies that created jobs, had to be no good. I mean, it is preposterous that businesses are under attack in the United States of America. Anybody that makes over $250,000 in the form of a personal income tax return is now, by Washington definition, a rich person, when everybody who has got a college degree knows that the personal income tax rate in the United States of America is the business tax of America. Every subchapter S, every individual proprietorship and every partnership in the United States of America files tax returns as individuals, and when they do, and they show that they made 2 million or 3 million or, God forbid, 4 million, they pay the income tax rate; they deduct their working expenses, their living expenses; and then they invest in a new store, a new shop, and most of the time 25% of their profits, quote, unquote, are tied up in accounts receivable or inventory. But all of the sudden, all of those people who make over 250,000 are rich folks to be fleeced. And if that’s job formation stimulation in America, I’m Mary Poppins.

    Hey, he’s a DUMMOCRAPT! http://media.ccomrcdn.com/medi....._30627.mp3

    ‘Expansionary Austerity’ Explained

Basically, the theory is that cutting spending reduces the probably of default which in turn lowers interest rates, which supports investment. In addition, less government spending implies lower future taxes and higher earnings, which “may” encourage investment and spending. A European Central Bank working paper “argues that ‘a fiscal contraction may turn out to be expansionary if the expectation channel becomes sufficiently strong.'”

    Does it work?

“In practice … it rarely works out that way. In a recent study of 173 fiscal-policy changes in rich countries from 1978 to 2009, economists from the IMF found that cutting a country’s budget deficit by 1% of GDP typically reduces real output by about two-thirds of a percentage point and raises the unemployment rate by one-third of a percentage point. Occasionally, an economy will buck the trend.”

But West takes being a wackjob to a new level – he was even dismissed from his job in the military during the Bush years for being too “enthusiastic” in torturing suspects brought in for interrogation. That’s a whole NEW level of crazy!!!

And all Wasserman-Schultz did was criticize West for his plans to cut Medicare, using the usual polite language of the House. But West doesn’t take ANY criticism lightly, and became unglued.

I thought about posting about his tirade earlier, but I got busy. I’m really suprised that Puddy would bring up himself, it’s really just an embarrasment for West – if he is capable of being embarrased. He comes from a very conservative district, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up being a one-term congressman.

Puddy @ 45: I’ve heard Shultz in interviews before. She is partison (what politician isn’t?), but not rude. Your description of her position re: the GOP wanting to kill seniors is an exaggeration of her statements.

But all in all, in looking at your list, I can’t find anything which is wrong. Except for the seniors, it’s got a solid basis in fact.

And the only problem with the way you wrote the reference to seniors is that the GOP “wants” to kill seniors. I don’t think they want to do that. They just don’t care if their policies have that effect. It’s a question of malicious disregard, rather than active intent.

To them, the ultimate crime isn’t doing any of the things which Wasserman-Schultz complains about. To them, the inexecusable crime is to point it out publically. That’s what earns their wrath – they are used to people being too polite to point out their shortcomings, and they become enraged when it happens.

Kind of like the phsychopath who insists that everyone MUST believe him, just because he said so.

What have you got against Mexicans? Are you bigoted against them? Ooops my bad.. Dumb question.

Hmmm. It appears yes Dorothy they CAN be persuaded to go home:

This stability in 2010 follows a two-year decline from the peak of 12 million in 2007 to 11.1 million in 2009 that was the first significant reversal in a two-decade pattern of growth. Unauthorized immigrants were 3.7% of the nation’s population in 2010.

AGUA NEGRA, Mexico — The extraordinary Mexican migration that delivered millions of illegal immigrants to the United States over the past 30 years has sputtered to a trickle, and research points to a surprising cause: unheralded changes in Mexico that have made staying home more attractive.

A growing body of evidence suggests that a mix of developments — expanding economic and educational opportunities, rising border crime and shrinking families — are suppressing illegal traffic as much as economic slowdowns or immigrant crackdowns in the United States.

Here in the red-earth highlands of Jalisco, one of Mexico’s top three states for emigration over the past century, a new dynamic has emerged. For a typical rural family like the Orozcos, heading to El Norte without papers is no longer an inevitable rite of passage. Instead, their homes are filling up with returning relatives; older brothers who once crossed illegally are awaiting visas; and the youngest Orozcos are staying put.

“I’m not going to go to the States because I’m more concerned with my studies,” said Angel Orozco, 18. Indeed, at the new technological institute where he is earning a degree in industrial engineering, all the students in a recent class said they were better educated than their parents — and that they planned to stay in Mexico rather than go to the United States.

I’m posting more of that article than I probably should, but the point really needs made. Illegal immigration from Mexico is stopping. Record numbers of illegals are being deported. Employers are getting busted.

Mexico still has a lot of problems and they have what amounts to a civil war going, so I continue to support having a large border patrol and national guard presence on the Mexican border.

    http://www.nytimes.com/interac.....ref=mexico
Douglas S. Massey, co-director of the Mexican Migration Project at Princeton, an extensive, long-term survey in Mexican emigration hubs, said his research showed that interest in heading to the United States for the first time had fallen to its lowest level since at least the 1950s. “No one wants to hear it, but the flow has already stopped,” Mr. Massey said, referring to illegal traffic. “For the first time in 60 years, the net traffic has gone to zero and is probably a little bit negative.”

The decline in illegal immigration, from a country responsible for roughly 6 of every 10 illegal immigrants in the United States, is stark. The Mexican census recently discovered four million more people in Mexico than had been projected, which officials attributed to a sharp decline in emigration.

    # 53: “Why are you a racist rhp6033?”

That’s laughable, on so many different levels.

In the first place, I didn’t know West was a black man until about a week ago. I had heard about him much earlier than that, and read some of his comments, and a long time ago had concluded he was either an idiot, a jerk, or a bully. Turns out he’s a combination of all three. Being black has nothing to do with it. Idiots, jerks, and bullys come in all races. But you find many more of them in the Republican party than elsewhere.

Second, if you could see a picture of my wife’s family reunion, you would realize how ridiculous a statement that is. We’ve got just about every race, nation and culture represented there, including whites, blacks, pacific islanders, Japanese, Koreans, Polish, etc., and I’m quite happy with that. Of course, you don’t care about such facts, you just want to throw grenades at anyone who points out your posts are idiotic and without factual bsis.

Third, why do you pull out the race card when it suits you, but then point fingers at others when they do so? I’m sure it’s just an attempt to deflect from the fact that your defense of West was a knee-jerk reaction, and the facts show he wasn’t deserving of such a defense.

The violence on the Mexican side of the border with the U.S. is also a strong deterrent to immmigration. The mass kidnapping of immigrants and forcing them to choose between working for the cartels or getting a bullet tends to discourage the northward journey. And for those who travel from Central America through Mexico to get into the U.S., they are faced with the constant threat of beatings, theft, and rape all along the route.

In the recent past, lots of the immigrants would come to the U.S. and plan to work for ten years or so, sending most of their wages home to their families. The plan was not to settle in the U.S., but to save enough money to build a house back home on a family plot in Mexico. But increased enforcement against employers, the current rescession, and the increased danger incurred in making the trip, and more opportunities in Mexico, have made that strategy less attractive.

Funny – hundreds of millions of dollars spent building walls, with high-tech survellance systems supplied by Boeing and other defense contractors, failed to make much of a dent. But the immigration failed anyway, thanks in large part to George W. Bush’s economic mis-management.

Who knew that the way to solve the immigration problem was to kill the U.S. economy? That’s like torching a house to get rid of a pest problem.

My support for a heavy presence on the Mexican border is do to the possibility of having a failed state on our southern border. It’s not about immigration other than maybe getting a big wave of folks if the Mexican government were to collapse, which I used to see as a big possibility. These days I’m thinking the Mexican government collapsing is a more remote possibility.

Immigration started falling in 2000 with the election of Vicente Fox and the political and economic reforms he put in place. Also, birthrates in Mexico have been falling since around 1970 and have been barely above the replacement rate since around 2005. Mexico’s population is growing at a whopping 1.102% right now.

They intended to get married and live here in the U.S., but he wanted to do it legally, he just hadn’t figured out the details yet. But when he showed up at the Peace Arch border crossing yet another time, he was charged with “attempting to immigrate illegally”, warned to never come into the U.S. again without a proper visa, and deported back to Canada.

He was surprised to find out that although you can can come and go across the border as a “tourist” who stays less than 30 days, if you are doing so for any other reason (such as to get married), you need a visa instead. But now that he has charges in the U.S. pending against him, he can’t get a visa.

    Allen West – ButtPutty’s Great Black Man(TM)
    The Iraq interrogation incident

While serving in Taji, Iraq, West received information from an intelligence specialist about a reported plot to ambush him and his men. The alleged plot reportedly involved Yahya Jhodri Hamoodi, a civilian Iraqi police officer. West, who was not responsible for conducting interrogations in Iraq and had never conducted nor witnessed one, had his men detain Hamoodi. In the process of detaining Mr. Hamoodi, soldiers testified that Mr. Hamoodi appeared to reach for his weapon and needed to be subdued. Hamoodi was beaten by four soldiers from the 220th Field Artillery Battalion on the head and body. West then fired his pistol near Hamoodi’s head, after which Hamoodi provided West with names and information, which Hamoodi later described as “meaningless information induced by fear and pain.” At least one of these suspects was arrested as a result, but no plans for attacks or weapons were found. West said “At the time I had to base my decision on the intelligence I received. It’s possible that I was wrong about Mr. Hamoodi.”

West was charged with violating articles 128 (assault) and 134 (general article) of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. During a hearing held as part of an Article 32 investigation in November 2003, West stated, “I know the method I used was not right, but I wanted to take care of my soldiers.” The charges were ultimately referred to an Article 15 proceeding rather than court-martial, at which West was fined $5,000. LTC West accepted the judgment and retired with full benefits in the summer of 2004. Asked if he would act differently under similar circumstances again, West testified, “If it’s about the lives of my soldiers at stake, I’d go through hell with a gasoline can.” After Lieutenant Colonel West was relieved of his command, an interpreter employed by a private contractor said that without his presence the region he previously oversaw “became more dangerous and chaotic”.

HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
