The Seattle Chapter of Drinking liberally meets tonight, and we will be celebrating the 8th anniversary of Drinking Liberally. It all began in a bar in New York…now there are 228 chapters of Drinking Liberally and Living Liberally worldwide.

Please join us for a pint and a toast. We meet at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E. Starting time is 8:00 pm, but a few folks show up around 7:00 pm for dinner.

    “We hold … that Ashcroft did not violate al-Kidd’s Fourth Amendment rights,” Justice Antonin Scalia said in his majority opinion. The five justices in the majority on this aspect of the decision are all Republican appointees.

    Abdullah al-Kidd was arrested in 2003 under the federal material witness statute. The feds had no evidence that al-Kidd had terrorism ties, they merely suspected he might, so they arrested him not as a culprit or suspect but as a potential witness.

    Although the liberal members of the Supreme Court also voted that al-Kidd couldn’t sue Ashcroft for abusing the material witness statute, they refused to say Ashcroft’s actions as attorney general didn’t violate al-Kidd’s constitutional rights.

    “Sotomayor said no previous case involving allegedly unlawful arrests ‘involved prolonged detention of an individual without probable cause to believe he had committed any criminal offense.’

    “Ginsburg said al-Kidd’s ‘ordeal is a grim reminder of the need to install safeguards against disrespect for human dignity, constraints that will control officialdom even in perilous times.'”

    “Control officialdom.” That’s the issue here. Bush administration officialdom was out of control. They behaved like Nazis. But the Republican members of the Supreme Court went out of their way to say that’s all right, Republican officialdom can do that, you have no constitutional rights. The five Republicans who signed that opinion are, by the way, the same five Republicans who said corporations do have constitutional rights even though corporations aren’t people.

    If you want a Supreme Court that says corporations can spend as much money as they want to buy politicians, subvert our democracy, and run this country as they please for their own benefit; but that same bought-and-paid-for government can throw you in jail indefinitely just because they feel like it and you can’t even sue them, then vote Republican. Because only Republicans appoint justices like that.

    The majority opinion in the Ashcroft case is what lawyers call “dicta” — comments that aren’t necessary to decide a case. All eight voting justices agreed al-Kidd couldn’t sue Ashcroft because public officials enjoy substantial immunity from civil liability connected with the performance of their official duties. But the five Republican justices went further and said Ashcroft didn’t violate al-Kidd’s constitutional rights — when he clearly did just that. In educated quarters, this is called “making political speeches from the judicial bench,” and is frowned on. It’s amateurish, childish, sophomoric. But what do you expect from five Republican clowns? The fact Republican presidents clothed these guys in judicial robes doesn’t make them anything more than clowns.

    Andrew Brieghtbart (sp)? has tried to create another scandel for a Democrat, this time by posting a picture which he claimed was sent viat Twitter from N.Y. Rep. Anthony Weiner to a Washington state co-ed.

    It turns out that the Congressman’s Twitter account was hacked, which is supported by the fact that an announcement to that effect quickly followed the sending of the picture. The account was suspended until it can be investigated and resumed under some more secure provisions.

    In the meantime, the Co-ed has issued a press release saying that she never had any contact with the Congressman. The publicity has forced her to have the student temporarily pull her columns from the paper, and she has informed the college that she will not be attending class for the remainder of the term. She is also hiring an attorney to investigate.

    It’s long past time for the authorities to quit treating this buy as a mere political prankster. He is destroying organizations and careers through deceit, editing, and falshoods, and now is endangering the education of an innocent college student, all for political gain. In this, he appears to have been learning the ropes from Karl Rove, who in term learned them from Daniel Seggretti (sp?), of the Watergate Plumber’s fame.

    And any publication which carries this known fraud’s stories should have every subscriber immediately cancel their subscription.

    If I was this gal’s father, I would announce that I was making a public statement to the news media. Then with cameras rolling, I would point out that when I grew up in the South, if someone falsly impuned upon the reputation of a man’s daughter, it was considered justifiable homicide if he took matters into his own hands.

    But this being a more modern and “polite” society, I would say that I would refrain from such violent conduct, and would instead devote the remainder of my life, and my energies well into retirement, into making this miserable excuse for a human being’s life utterly miserable. His wife, his children, and his grand-children would be reminded – daily – what a lying, scum of the earth he is. They would know that you can’t trust anything which comes out of his mouth. And when he gets involved in some piccadillo (and I’m sure he will), I would be right there to film it and display it on every website and media outlet which would carry it.

    I’m sure he would laugh it off. He would feel confident, as only a young, well-financed arrogant priss could, that he was immune from any such efforts.

    But when he asks his financiers and beneficiaries to award him with some lucrative or important federal position, he would only get some apology – “it’s just too hot right now, that angry father up in Washington state is reminding everyone daily what a piece of manure you are, and we can’t do anything for you, sorry.”

    And that’s only a fraction of the penalty which he deserves.

Suposedly, according to my textbook, marijuana contains 17 MORE CARCINOGENS THAN TOBACCO. Major bullshit. Anyways, my friend puts his hand up and asks “Hey sir, if marijuana causes cancer, why are people WITH cancer prescribed it?” And my teacher replies with “Um..well, uh, they, um…. well..*30 second think break* uhmm…. They are given special marijuana that doesn’t contain carcinogens” Hahahaha. Gotta love the propaganda they have in textbooks and the such.

    Meanwhile, it seems to me that the news world is having an awful lot of hypocrisy these days .. Lee Thehim’s paeans to pot seem to me to have a lot in common with the radical right’s hype about RyanCare. Of course someone needs to comment that Breitbart’s with Winer’s weiner inevitably is leading to the traditional angst among the old media about a lack of journalistic standards in the online world.

    My favorite recent hypocrisy, however, is cowardice of the supposedly liberal art world that extolls art as free expression while it is expunging China’s most prominent arttist, Ai Weiwei, because the Party wants to silence the man.
    I think we need to have a special exhibit for hypocrital art.

    Ridership is up!

    Ridership on Central Link light rail increased by 19 percent in comparison with the first three months of 2010 (1.65 million to 1.38 million), with average weekday boardings increasing by 27 percent. Light rail ridership, however, has been flat since the middle of last year. Average weekday boardings in the first quarter of 2011 were just under 21,000 per day.

    ST Express bus ridership increased by 7 percent, and average weekday boardings increased by 6 percent.

    King County Metro reports a 3.6 percent increase in monthly ridership on motor and trolley buses comparing April 2011 to April 2010 (377,942 vs. 364,905), after three months in which ridership fell just short of last year’s marks.

    The State economy, especially real unemployment is way worse than it appears. The U6 number is the actual number of folks that are unemployed. This number does not include the UNDER EMPLOYED. According to State U3 stats, unemployment actually look better in April than in March. The reason they look better is the fact the 44,170 folks left the workforce because THEY COULD NOT FIND A JOB. King County had 18,220 who left the workforce and in Snohomish County had 7,180. An analysis shows it is youth from 16 to 25 years old, African-Americans, other minorities and WOMEN who are primarily the largest percentage of this group.

    Look around. It’s bad. In the meantime we use tax dollars to pay productive people to be unproductive and we look for ways to stick it to businesses who as a result are downsizing or looking to leave. Only the government sector has escaped the horror. And that is certainly not sustainable.

    Obama and Gregoire made matters worse. Obama thru massive deficit spending and Gregoire by not making substantive reductions in the State Employee contracts.
